  1. I'm still curious about what you did on the tune up? Give us a idea of what your tune up consisted of? I have always found a tune up to be most helpful in getting these old beasts back in the game. I'm guessing/hoping you did, Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Front fuel filter Rear fuel filter Air cleaner, Decals That usually does the trick? Did I miss anything? Missing any one of these could cause poor performance and lousy mileage. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  2. Hard to say... I'd speculate you jamed your linkage. It's possible you broke a tooth off a gear? You could take a look at your tranny fluid for signs of metal I ground a gear back in the mid 80's and it has shifted rough ever since but it has never been a problem during the last 20 years? I'd check it and drive it! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--1 - 2 grind 01 Forester--smooth...
  3. Just got back from moab. I can tell you that there's no way you guys are going to make "Gold Bar" work for lifted Subies The first major obsticle is going to make any return trip a problem I'd also suggest "Cliff Hanger" is out too. They have modified the dangerous obsticle on the edge of the cliff so that's not the problem any more, but the trail still poses problems for a non-geared Subie. The only trail we ran that is Subable is "Kane Creek". This trail would have to be run top to bottom (backwards) with Subies. The only concern I would have is during one of the 40 river crossings, we found one that was over 3ft deep and fairly long. The problem here would be "floating" a Sub and loosing it to the river? Most of the other crossings were short enough that you wouldn't take much chance of floating away. The cliffs on Kane could be dropped off but not re-climbed. That would be why you'd wanna start at "Hole in the Rock" and run that direction. We went and found Upper Helldurado and now I know why it's a 4+ I'll post some temp pics. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=584 Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  4. Humm... A vehicle new enough to have and air bag I can't afford to wheel in a car new enough to have an air bag Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--what's an airbag? 01 Forester--ain't goin off road!
  5. Am I the only one who carrys a Saw? Oh ya, lock picks and and padlock shims
  6. Why is that link taking me to Microsoft.com? What's up with that? OK it's working now. I like the SAMBAR! Why don't they sell those here?
  7. We wanna see pics!!! There are no real aftermarket gears available. Your only real choices are switching diffs off something else? If your just using 2WD then your not necessarily locked into using Subaru Axles? Other axles/diffs may allow you more flexability. I'd suggest maybe a Samurai solid axle? Just a thought, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  8. I was driving to work today behind a new Outback (2005?), I was noticing the Outback had dual exhausts. Then I got looking at the back of the car. It looks like to route the exhaust to the back they split it to two mufflers just to the rear of the diff. Have they lowered the clearance of the Outback with the exhaust? From the rear the exhaust was hiding the diff, the exhaust appeared to be the lowest point on the vehicle? Is this the way they all are or was this one screwed up? Something seems wrong? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  9. I've been welded since before the tube frame was even finished. It was one of the first things to happen. I'm just trying to get an feel for any tricks that may be out there for saving repairs on the trail. If there is a techinque that will allow me to not replace stubs on a regular basis, I want to hear it! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--welded, one axle removed. 01 Forester--LSD two axles installed.
  10. I was wonder that? So in a corner is all your power going to be eaten up when your binding everything up? How bad is the bindup coming from the rear axles?
  11. I'm with Miles, Remove short HH cable, let the spring do it's thing and be done with it forever!!! I took mine off in 1986 Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--no HH!!!! 01 Forester--no HH!
  12. Where I was going with this post was, asphault is a lot like "slick rock". For Moab type usage of a welded diff, are you going to need to take as wide as turn as possible, to minimize the bind up on the drive train system? This may not work for the obsticle at hand. I was trying to ascess what might be a reasonable driving approach for welded diffs on slick rock. I was wondering if a tight turn might work with a burped throttle and a well timed hard crank on the wheel. This may allow the vehicle to unload the inside rear wheel momentarily and allow the slippage of the inside rear wheel in a tighter corner? Does the welded diff require more power because of the binding up of the driveline when manuvering? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Welded with one axle in. 01 Forester--LSD both axles in, thank you!
  13. For what it's worth... I'll be in Moab later this week doing a bit of Jeeping (now the safari is over ). We are looking at doing some of the lesser traveled trails rather than the obligitory/more crowded, Hells, Poisen, Gold bar, Golden Spike, Fins, Kane, Steel bender... Anyway the trails we plan on running are Tip Toe behind the rocks, Harrah Pass, Chicken Corners, Cliff hanger, 7 mile rim, Wipe out hill, Flat Iron mesa, 3-D, Top of the World via Onion Creek and Rose garden hill. Most of these trails are rated fairly easy. I'll assess them for "Subability". Not planning on bringing "Summer" on this trip. We'll be in your basic H2, Defender 90, Cherokee and exocage Toyota. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--Summer 01 Forester
  14. Hey those of you with welded diffs, Do you ever drive on the street with them on a regular basis? (with both axles in) Just wondering how many folks get away with this or if it breaks axles everytime? What I'm getting at is, If your careful, can you get away with it with no ill effects? or is it just a repair waiting to happen? Looking for experience Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Welded! 01 Forester--Limited.
  15. Jared, What happened the diff? Is there a story associated with this? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--Still on original welded diff 01 Forester--Also still on original diff
  16. Great pic! We just don't have lifted Subies around here. Those would certainly be an eye catcher around these parts. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  17. I say the bed size is SMALL If you have an older ATV you should be able to get it in the back no problem. The newer ATV's are getting big and heavy. It would certainly be a load if it would fit? Good luck Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  18. Great Pics, Love the scenery! My favorite was the "hyperspace" windshield shot I couldn't get the vids to work Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  19. This is not a big mystery... You need to have one of your Cop buddies run the plate 2DNF259 and find the last registered owner. After that any internet peoplefinder program should locate this guy. Although he may be in jail and that's why the car was just left there? The Apartment manager could call the local P.D. and request a Cop come out and see if it's abandoned or stolen. In the process he's going to ask the manager if XXXXX was ever living here? You should be able to get this info some how...? Get the 10th digit of the vin and find out what year it is! Good Luck, Glenn
  20. Your Subaru and a Baja bug are apples and oranges. They are just different beasts. A 2WD Bug is not going to climb a hill like a 4WD Subie. :-p As for the tires use, ATV rather than Quad, as your key word in your search. Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Atv tires 01 Forester--Factory tires
  21. Do you think you will be needing/wanting LOW range in your tranny? As I see it that would be a determining factor in what years you should consider? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--Low range 01 Forester--High range
  22. My wife was the one who sent away for the plans So she wouldn't have to drive the car anymore!!! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester A link to build pics http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo21
  23. I know it's difficult to bring up at this point but... Have you considered letting your friend be an "organ donor". I have a hard time believing that there are no salvageable parts left? Short of being a Suicide Bomber victim, there has to be something that the poor little Subie could donate, to make the world a better place? There are so many Subies out there waiting for just the right part to become available? Since were on the subject, I'm looking for: Diff, Axles, Stubs, Spare, Pk Brake lever FPCU... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  24. Let's keep everything in prospective here, If you were doing that, It wouldn't be a Rhino! The Rhino is an answer to "What to do with a rusty Subaru with good running gear". It's not the answer to "Where do I start building my competiton Rock Crawler". When you get down to it your just building an "alternative" body for a old Subaru. The Rhino looks mean but it's really just a light weight Subaru. If I was going to make a Rock Crawler, I sure wouldn't start with an old Subaru. I love my Subies but there are so many better platforms to start with. A Toyota or a Samurai would be my first choice too! Now I have a buggy, I can't justify having a real Rock Crawler :-\ Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
