1987 GL Wagon To Brat? Possible?
Sweet82 replied to Mysticcal's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That is a Brat! Not somthing like a Brat. That's the Tamiya Mudblaster R/C in 1/10th scale. Wanna sell it? (without the wing) Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
So, I'm thinkin maybe Exocage! A cage would rage! Prolly not practicle :-\

I think Ross is on the right track. I had a bad wire that caused the same symptoms. I looked at everything but the wires. Get a new set of wires and see what happens... I'd bet you cure it. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Heater hose, tune up and coolant flush shouldn't take more than an hour. The rest is kinda hard to speculate on. Skill and familarity with the car are going to affect the rest of your chores...

The Hatch makes the most sence for the reasons above... However, I think the sentimental favorite is the Brat. But throwing sentiment out there is only one choice. It can take on many forms too! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

On the 1982 US hatchback (EA-81) the bumpers fall into the 2 1/2 mile/hour catagory. If anything hits those bumpers they will fold. The vehicle was classed as a 4X4 and thereby was held to a lower crash standard than "cars" in the US. I'd think the crash test data is still on file for the 80's Subarus somewhere on the net... http://www.crashtest.com/subaru/ie.htm Found some...

Been there done that...it don't work! Horsepower is great but the gearing still sucks! My Forester can't come close to competing with my 82 (in a stock configuration). Even with twice the Horsepower, it does not come close to comparing with any 80's D/R. Gearing is the issue with off-roading a Forester. Clearance is way down the line of needs for wheeling a Forester. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--off-road car 01 Forester--snow car

The only trails I hearing about is TOTW? What other trails did you do? -
If you apply Mudrat79's D/R tranny, you may actually have a Forester worth lifting. What's the point of a lift with out gears to match the tires and lift? When my Forester gets a bit older, that is the route I'm going. Gear it! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer-- ready to rock 01 Forester

Sounds like TOTW took it's toll on Subarus? I would have guessed that trail could have been done with out much damage? As I remember it, there are just a few small ledges that need to be scaled and the rest is just good solid uphill? Did you guys get time to do any other trails? How was your gearing when you were attempting the steeper stuff? What is your assessment of the welded diff on Moab trails? I'm curious, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Never been to Moab... 01 Forester--Been to Moab but not on trails.

Looks cool but price is going to be everything when it comes to purchasing these babies! I'd bet they become price prohibitive to the average Cheap-Skate Subaru Owner. If it was more than $100.00, I'd continue to swap axles in and out.

Pics, reports, rumors... How was Moab? San Rafael Swell (75mi west) was great!!! How about a trip report or two.... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Looks good but... where's the Spare tire? these days I assume it's rolling around in your trunk?

A newer Subie (Outback) is not going to make you happy with it's rugged off-road abilities. It's a snow car/gravel road car. There are no real off-road upgrade options. A truck will get you through the ugly stuff that would hang up an Outback. The other thing to consider is the rest of the time an Outback is a much nicer ride than the Toyota. As for mileage, I'd bet they may be closer than you think? I recently got 21 & 24 on a road trip in my subie Tough decision. Only you can answer.

Is there any secret information available on when they are going to offer a Dual Range tranny in the U.S. for the Baja? I want gears to match clearance Still waiting... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

I don't know about you but this seems like good information to archive, if it's not already. If I was frustrated with a pile of parts, this would help me, get them all assembled correctly. Is there a torque specification on the castle nut? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

I thought a WRX was already modified Welcome to the board. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Did you ever follow up on this??? I think if we had an idea on the cost, we'd know more about demand. Cost is going to be the ultimate decision maker, with out a price, people really don't know if they could afford it. If I remember right when I looked into this, it would have been around $80 per/ Just curious, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

He didn't pay for anything. Get the car, see if you can get it working. Registration is not the issue, why would you pay any registration fees if you can't get it running? If it does get running then start assessing whether it's worth putting money in. I don't think anyone would sink 3-4k in a free car. I wouldn't invest much more than a cheap tune up. Fix it up or carve it up! Drive it till it quits and then walk...
