I second Caleb'z motion! -
One of my neighbors had the same problem. He couldn't get the pulley to stay on. It started chewing up everything... Welding was his solution! I talked with ShawnW about this... Apparently the factory service manuel is wrong on the torque specks! It takes big time torque to keep those babies on. If I recall it was about twice what the FSM said. Shawn also mentioned that it was not uncommon to see the pulleys welded on Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

From what I understand most of the folks running the real big tires are driving, or at least starting, in "low" range. That being the case they have functionally given up their low range for larger tires. I enjoy walking over/around an obsticle. With larger tires you end up having to bash your way through difficult areas--which given our suspension is necessary at times? Still I enjoy watching the lugs creep by. The "going big" thing doesn't sell with me because, unless you divorce your transfer case, you have functionally built a rig for "show"--(And Subies Look Good this way) I wanted to build this for performance more than show. The tire / gearing equation is a subjective one. I chose gearing with the idea that I'll choose my line carefully and be able to apply my power more precisely in a STEEP climb and not burn my clutch. Also when your the first to do something your truly in the unknown zone. No one on the board has really done exactly what I did so there is not a lot of feed back on what will work and what won't. I talked with the Rhino people about this very subject (gearing & tires) before finalizing my decision. I have been impressed over the years of the climbing ability of the stock tires and gearing combination. I have noticed the difference between the stock tires and the ATV tires. I can't accelerate as quick! The "car" does not have the instant pep with the bigger tires. I can lay down a GOOD sheet of rubber with both sets of tires (my poor lawn)...but that's only because the ATV's don't have a lot of rubber on the ground at any given time. The bottom line is there are probably a thousand reasons to put bigger tires on and there's probably a thousand reasons to not get too big. I guess you have to sort through the info available and see what makes sence to you and your needs? This is what I came up with....And as far as that goes...I'm already starting to see tire wear which means that I may have to replace them sometime in the future...? Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--Didn't anyone catch the fact that my last tire picture was compared to a trailer spare not a subie tire? 01 Forester--Needs gearing for bigger tires...

http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/ Several of these kits are drop in kits for Subarus The one I built is a bastardized version of the bandit. I made mine into a 4 seater. Changed the rear end design. Dropped the front hood 8". Added the Xterra roof rack. Put rock sliders on it.... Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

I'm not sure I ever got 30 mpg in "Summer" when she was still on the road... I have consistently got 24 - 28 out of that old EA81... I have always found the magic answer to my problems was a basic tune up. Cap, rotor, wires, plugs... Worked every time for me! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

S'ko, Archemits is right. I went from a 22.5" to a 26 so the tires are not small. I was trying to choose a balance between gearing and clearance. It's a tough call. I thought about pugs but I kinda like the foot wide ATV tire idea. If I could find a set of pugs and super swampers cheap I'd consider having another set of tires, but they would have to be about the same size--because of gearing....I don't think they make a super swamper in a 26? With my set up I have 11.5" down the middle with the suspension LOWERED My real motivation is to get someone else to build one As far as I know I'm the only one in the US. It would be cool to have a fleet of them Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

That's the beauty of these beasts. They cost nothing and are just plain fun to drive! It's never going to be a hard core wheeler but you sure as heck can have a ton of fun thrashing it around the hills. GO FOR IT! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--been driving it for 23 years now 01 Forester--been driving it for 2 years now -
I have about $1,500 in this Buggy... Not a chance I'd sell it for anywhere near that but.... My point is Making your own is not that expensive and you'd have something much better looking That's my unbiased personal opnion http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=584 Mudrat was the one who recommended this kit to me... He has the plans too, but has never built his....YET! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer--easy building kit! 01 Forester--came built!

I think I'm seeing double I think some of your questions need to be answered by you first...? A lot of what your asking is really personal opinion. I Purchased a 01 Forester after driving my 82 GL for 23 years. I think the 160 horse of the Forester is more than enough. I consider the Forester a fast car But after driving a 82 GL for that long any car that moves is a fast car to me I think power is a relative term and subject to interpretation. I did a bunch of research on resale/depreciation. It seemed to me that most of the Subaru's depreciated at more or less the same rate. I purchased my Forester almost two years ago this April. I still see them in the paper for more than I paid (or at least the same $). The older a car gets the less any options are worth. I get nervous buying older cars too. Obviously, there is a trade off between money and age of a car. This is a question only you can answer. I can't afford a new car and therefore I had to settle with a year/price combination I could afford. Having said all that, I love my Forester. The car does what I need it to do. As far as problems for the car, I'm more worried about a head gasket than clutch problems. I'd think a manuel tranny is always going to out last an auto in the long run. Did any of that make sense? Looks Fun, I was waiting for the front car to spin and the rear car to hit it.... Great Video, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Dumb Idea?

I've used the spray on kind on the "rock sliders" on the buggy. Paint scraped off the first time anyone stepped on them. The spray on crap goes along way and is just plain tough! No scraping since I coated the sliders... The nice thing is if you chip it...just recoat it! Done! Your not matching paint... Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--Rhino coated... 01 Forester--Undercoated...works well too! -
In talking with dealers I found that the 4X144 rims were only available in a ATV front rim. I was not able to find any 4X144 rear ATV rims? If you were going to use an ATV rim you'd want the wide rear rim not the front narrow rims-4X144. Because of the lug hole size of a Subaru spare you may be able to fit it on to the 4X144 hub on an ATV but it still would not bolt properly. The reverse would not work. An ATV 4X144 rim would potentially have smaller lug holes than a Subaru Hub? Either way it won't bolt right. I considered purchasing a set of ITP steel ATV rims and drilling them out to 4X140 but they would not be as strong as a custom rim or have the correct offset. One other note, getting the 4X140 lug pattern dead center w/o having the 6 lug "template" would be difficult. Someone up in the northwest is off-roading a Justy on ATV tires. In my quest for rims, I found the tire shop who mounted them for the Justy guy, but I never found the Justy guy. http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/images/stalkerdualy.jpg This guy is driving on "dualies". He has an interesting writeup on manufacturing oversized "Subaru" rims. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

hill hold or no hill hold?
Sweet82 replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'll step in... I hate the HH clutch! I think it's dangerous in an off-road application! Let me put you in a place where you might get in over you head quickly... Your attempting a long very steep climb. Some wheel slipping is occuring because of the loose conditions. You make it almost to the top and start spining...(I know this sounds far fetched because Subies have such great traction but bear with me)...You have just "spun out", you instinctively hit the brakes and you put in the clutch and assess what to do next...You can't turn around because to too narrow and steep. Your car is now is now beginning to slide backwards on the loose rocks. The only option is to let the car roll back down the hill...easyier said than done with a HH clutch. The natural reaction is to hold the clutch and release the brake just a bit and inch your way back down the hill, right? It ain't gonna happen with the HH clutch! Your going to find yourself with your front wheels locked up and sliding backwards...(when your wheels are locked they won't allow you to steer or straighten the car out--they just slide backwards--or even worse sideways!). The only way your going to gain control of your car (which is sliding currently gaining speed backwards) is to put it in neutral and then hit the brake again, disableing your HH clutch and allowing the wheels to roll and gaining full control of your brakes, then and only then, allowing you to true out the car as your sliding backwards... A lot to think about in a panic state of mind...? HH clutch is a great gimmick for city driving but off-road it may take you by supprise when you least need it... My HH clutch broke in 1984 and I've nerver fixed or missed it... My .02... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--NO HH Clutch! 01 Forester--NO HH Clutch!
