Testing approach and departure angles.(video)
I can't see the video but... What are your angles of approach and departure? A sheet of plywood shoved against your tires and an angle finder will tell the tale.

driving around with a welded diff
Me too! I've been looking for some kind of rubber cap to stick on the splines and cover the whole area and keep the dust out of the splines and the bearings. Something like a spray paint can lid made out of rubber or thick plastic may work? So far I have not found anything that will work.

LIFT OR NOT TO LIFT 84 subie wagon. Keep or not to keep
I'm not sure lifting it will improve the ride or handling. Most all old 4wd Subarus have the stink bug look. That's what makes them unique. That's what I like about them. Power is a relative term. A good running engine should get you around just fine. If the engine is running poorly a tune up seems to cure most everything that ails that engine. However, you'll never make that engine "fast". If your looking for fun vehicle that will take you most anywhere you want to go then the Subie is a good choice. My .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Free Loyale? Yeah Right!
It's free! Get a bill of sale and your covered. If any one has a question there is documentation on it's transfer. Fix it or carve it up and be happy. I recycled my old subie at a scrap yard not a junkyard and no one had a problem. My .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Custom bumper, unusal and (too wierd?)
I think it's great!!! I sorta fits that earthy image everyone has about Subies. I'd call it a True Woody Wagon!!! Hard to say how strong it really is with out seeing it in person but... I had also heard you could use wood as a bumper? Remember, At least in 1982 your bumper only has to meet the 2 1/2 mile/hour crash ratings for 4X4's. My bumper was just a thin piece of steel and was NOT strong! (2 1/2 mph). That looks stronger than my stock 82 bumper. Now just apply some nice wood trim along the sides I like it! Time for a different muffler

Yellow Superwinch from early 80's soobs....
I have the non stock Harbor Freight $39-49, #2000, winch on the buggy. Other than being black, I think it would be a good cheap starting point for off-road needs? Comes with 50ft of cable. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92860 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32&sort=1&cat=500&page=3 McBrat, where'd you get the pulley block? I had to make one? I'd prefer a real one... My .02, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

80 4wd wagon
Welcome to the board! These old engines are tough and easy to fix. I'd stick the motor back in and see what happens before I'd start shelling out bucks for something else? If it's a rally car and not a daily driver you may be able to humor an older motor along for a while without any worries. If it blows up then it blows up. First thing I'd do to improve performace is let it breathe a bit by making the exhaust bigger... If it runs a basic tune up will make a world of difference. Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

MOAB meet April 15, 16, 17.
It would be really hard to speculate on the run off situation down there. I'd think the flow down Kane Creek would be determined by the temps in the Manti Lasal Mtms just to the east. Depending on the melt off the stream could go either way? The snow and rain from the Jeep Safari week was gone. Most of the trails were dusty although the pot holes in the rocks were somewhat full. I'd still attempt Kane Creek (top to bottom) but talk to someone before you enter the canyon and walk any river sections in question. We were caught off guard by the one crossing. There were a bunch of drown ATV's trying to re-group and re-fire their ATV's at this crossing. The only help I can give you on finding this crossing is it was a right angle crossing NOT one of those where your driving in the river. Those never got over 2ft deep. As long as your camping up the river, I'd take in Top of the World via Rose Garden and Onion Creek and bring your camera! And once you get down you could take the back road in to Sand Flats Rd. and catch Porcupine Rim or Fins & Things. Both are dooable. I'll be about 75 miles to the west ridin in the San Rafael Swell. If I can hook up I'd like to. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

my wagon caught fire!!!!!!!!!!
I wasn't even half way through the post when I decided I needed to look at the date. Saw It Comming! :-p It was great anyway! My Hatch caught fire a bunch of times when I was carving it up. Mudrat suggested it was a galvanized metal type fire. That is still the most likely cause. Scared the #*$$ out of me!

1984 subaru gl wagon
Put in one more vote for the electric choke! Your Fuel Pump Control Unit may not be speaking properly with the carb. As I understand it you need to run power to the carb to keep the choke OFF! Disconnecting the wire should cause the choke to go ON! I drove around with a screwdriver in my carb to keep the choke open till I was able to jump the new wires. I'd also recommend a basic tune up. INCLUDING WIRES! I had something similar to what your describing and the culprit turned out to be a failing wire! Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Dead in a snowstorm...
We had that same storm yesterday. It will blow by quick. Were now in blue skys and warm temps. Could you pull off a fuel line on the filter? This may answer the question on if it's getting gas. I guess a spark is the next question? Once you spill gas all over the inside of your engine compartment then check for a spark! Maybe that should be done in reverse order? Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

oil pump changing question
I don't know about EA82's but on my EA81, I found a small metal plate behind the oil pump. I found this plate extremely easy to Break Be very careful removing this plate from your block or oil pump. Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Dead in a snowstorm...
Can you see inside your front fuel filter? Gas? I had my Trooper quit during a mean snow storm. I found snow had been sucked through all the ducting and covered my air filter and was suffocating my engine. Some "Heet" from the 7/11 and a quick bang on the air filter and I was on the road again! How bad was the snow storm? For what it's worth? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Help for no power and declining mpg's
I have never replaced my 02 sensor What do they look like? Is that the thing on the side of the air cleaner? I have no problem asking stupid questions :-p

Exhaust Q
I'm still curious about what you did on the tune up? Give us a idea of what your tune up consisted of? I have always found a tune up to be most helpful in getting these old beasts back in the game. I'm guessing/hoping you did, Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Front fuel filter Rear fuel filter Air cleaner, Decals That usually does the trick? Did I miss anything? Missing any one of these could cause poor performance and lousy mileage. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

messed something up...??
Hard to say... I'd speculate you jamed your linkage. It's possible you broke a tooth off a gear? You could take a look at your tranny fluid for signs of metal I ground a gear back in the mid 80's and it has shifted rough ever since but it has never been a problem during the last 20 years? I'd check it and drive it! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--1 - 2 grind 01 Forester--smooth...

MOAB meet April 15, 16, 17.
Just got back from moab. I can tell you that there's no way you guys are going to make "Gold Bar" work for lifted Subies The first major obsticle is going to make any return trip a problem I'd also suggest "Cliff Hanger" is out too. They have modified the dangerous obsticle on the edge of the cliff so that's not the problem any more, but the trail still poses problems for a non-geared Subie. The only trail we ran that is Subable is "Kane Creek". This trail would have to be run top to bottom (backwards) with Subies. The only concern I would have is during one of the 40 river crossings, we found one that was over 3ft deep and fairly long. The problem here would be "floating" a Sub and loosing it to the river? Most of the other crossings were short enough that you wouldn't take much chance of floating away. The cliffs on Kane could be dropped off but not re-climbed. That would be why you'd wanna start at "Hole in the Rock" and run that direction. We went and found Upper Helldurado and now I know why it's a 4+ I'll post some temp pics. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=584 Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
