Most modern engines use reverse flow now, out the bottom of the engine and back in through the top. nipper -

never fill any car engine with the car not running. Thats basically been the rule since there have been water pumps, but no one follows it. People are jusat used to have very forgiving cooling system designs for the most part. I have used this as long as I've worked on cars and only once did i have a problem. With an empty radtiator make sure the bleed screw is oopen (if so equiped). Start the car. SLOWLY fill the radiator with coolant (premix just makes life easier). Once the radiator is filled wait for the thermostat to open. There will be a surge of fluid out the radiator. Top off the radiator. Fill the overflow tank to the hot line. Put cap on the Radiator, close the bleed valve and drive around the block, watch the temp gauge. Park the car and allow it to cool off. Check coolant levle, top off as needed and repeat. Do this on level ground or car pointing uphill, never downhill. nipper -

Have you properly burped the cooling system? Have you replaced the cap and the T-stat? -

will just blow cold air. Why not just bypass it. And you know.... we DO so love a good story -
Booster test pump brakes ten times with car off. press brake pedal with car off start car while holding brake pedal down If the brake pedal does not move towards floor the booster is bad. Also check the brake booster check valve at the intake manifold. Since they are downhill from the booster, they tend to collcet moisture, but i think your booster is bad. nipper

HOw many miles are on the car? Normally i would say wait till the noise gets worse, but since it is a grinding noise that comes and goes: When was the last time the timing belt was changed? What was replaced along with the timing belt? Is it more of a rattle (Heat shields)? Next time you hear it, spray water (water bottle) on the accessory drive belt tension pulley and see if it goes away. nipper

Thanks Bucky. Blu needs a new rear bumper skin now . Thats the last time i go through one of those deep pits. i actually enjoy climbing and wandering more then splashing in the mud puddles. He is too important to me not to keep him in good shape. Funny the biggest thing i dread after these trips is not cleaning the car, but cleaning my boots nipper

Start with the cheap things first. A New PCV (ever replaced it) and clean the IAC valve. May also be a vacume leak. nipper

I'm confused. The transmission doesnt idle, the engine does. When was the last time this car had a tune-up and the IAC valve cleaned? nipper
