93leg...... After reading all your driving and Diagnosis, I feel very strongly that your Coil Pack is going out...... Reason you get O2 code is that under load if one or 2 holes are missfiring, you get raw fuel into exhaust, a knock due to the stumble associated with missfire, and computer trying to compinsate for all the above...... I have had 4 cars Locally all have these same symtoms, all came to me from the Dealer Locally, cause they couldn't figure it out.....????? All of these were Auto's.....????? Is your car stick....? With your car parked, can you get it to missfire or hesitate bad once warmed up....? or in gear ( if Auto ) with brake set and someone stepping on brakes, Do the timing light trick on each plug wire at the plug end.....put the car in drive and put a load to it lightly, see if you get a stumbling light.....??? I will wager that either 1-2 or 3-4 is misfiring/stumbling.......meaning that that part of the coil is breaking down under load...... Several folks on the Board right now seem to be experiencing the same issue....... Check it out that way, and let us know...... Later, John in Oregon......

EA 81 Carter 1 bbl to Weber swap
mudrat79 replied to pierman2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
AS you thought, It's not available, and you will need a Complete 4 bolt Hitachi intake manifold...... Do you have to worry about passing emissions.....? If Not, you can Delete alot of unecessary smog crap.....This makes The weber conversion very Easy...... If you have ok mechanical skills, the Conversion isn't Too bad..... Read a repair manual on how to remove the Intake as a Unit, then with it off, you can do the swap.... I would suggest buying the Redline Kit, as it Comes As a COMPLETE KIT...... Ask them to make sure to include a throttle cable mount for base of Carb.....it makes the conversion a breeze..... Hope this helps you some, John in Oregon..... -
Hello, Form Oregon.... I have had 2 cars with exactly your condition come to me from the dealership here locally.... try this...... Get a timing light....stick it on # 1 Plug wire.....With someone holding the brakes for you, put the car in gear and Romp the throttle short and Quickly..... The last Car I had do this was bad enough I could do it with it in park.... Run throttle up hard like under acceleration.....and it will cut out really bad but very gentle, and it runs ok.... My Money says if you Do this on all 4 plug wires, you'll find 1-2 or 3-4 missfiring under Load....... Coil Pack is on its Way out.... Here is whats happening..... At idle, there is Little Load on the Coil....it sparks just fine... on hard Accelleration, it has to work harder to get the Bang happening....So if it is breaking down, your electrical system can't produce enough amperage to do the job proper... above about 1800-2000rpm's, the Alternator kicks in and gives it the juice it needs, therefore smoothing out the missfire....and fixing al shifting issues..... I haven't run into this with a stick shifted car, but both Auto's I did had 1-2 Coil missfireing at Low end..... Coil Pack runs about $100.00 at the Dealer, and I would Suggest Buying it there...Takes all of about 12 mins to install...... Let me know if this ends up being your Issue, And Let me know if I was wrong..... Hope it works, John in Oregon.....

Hey All.....I am around, just Super Busy...... I've only recently started sandbagging this Part of the USMB... As Forester Ranger said..I am in the Process of Opening a Shop, and What I am going to Specialize in is the Bulding of New Gen Subaru Off-Road Equipment.... Bumpers, A-Bars, Skid Paltes, Rear Swingaway tire carriers, Roof-Racks and Such..... Part of the Problem I will Run into is Test Beds for building the First few of Each New Design..... F.R. has a 98 Forester, I built a Custom 2 inch lift for his car, and Can Build another set anytime for the Newer Subi's Now..... this Lift not only gives ground Lift Clearance, but also gives more room at the Strut For Larger than Stock tires......So ou get the best of 2 Worlds.....Driving his Forester, I feel it has a better ride and Off road Feel now......He can Vouche for that if he Wants...... I wil be Building him Bumpers and Other stuff, and With his Car as A test Bed, I can Build some Nice Forester Accessories... As I build, I will take pics and Post...... I am Also just moving into a New Home, and Shop Will soon be relocated to same Location as Home.... So if you can, Be patient....I will Hopefully before the End of October have Some Cool Pics for you al to drool Over...... Get everyone at my Shop by 1pm or so, and We can Do a BBQ there and watch my Copy of the Rubicon trip.......?? I'd be into 4x4'ing, but I've not had a chance to even look at fixing the BEAST-A-CON since I got back from the trip... only real fix is building a New rear Diff Bar........ Later, John in Eugene....... -

Pul the Vacuum off the Disty, and Using a long piece of vacuum line test it ( the Disty Vacuum advance) at the Disty... Do this with engine running at idleand Manually pull air off the vacuum advance, it should idle higher and stay there till you back off the vacuum... If it pulls then drops on its own, or dosn't pull at all, vacuum advance is bad , which will cause bad hesitation at bottom end.... Very common on stock disty's Old stock Hitachi carb doesn't pull near as hard as Weber, so it becomes more pronounced....:cornfuzz: Hope this Helps, John in Oregon.....

These Duel CArb intakes generally came on 30, 000 mile Jap motors......If you get one with all the linkage your good to go .....Hard to find though...... I have personally driven 2 Gen One Brats with this set up, and both of them had Gobbs of Get up and Go...... One of them I could Burn tires off in 2WD all the way into 4th gear.... The other was a bit more tired in the drive train, and would only light them up into 3rd......:brolleye: I know they are available for 1800 motors also, And one guy at WCSSIII had one set up in his Hatch, But I've never driven one of them , so Can't say how they do.....? I will say that if you get one Use it with stock carbs though...... We tried to stuff webers on one of the Brats, And it got entirely too much fuel... Later, John in Oregon.....

Tranny options for an EA81 T
mudrat79 replied to harpua's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank You Shawn...... Now I can proceed without Worries.... Later for now, P.S. I still can't get logged in to the Gallery......? John in Oregon...... -
all you experienced modders....
mudrat79 replied to heartless's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Depending on how bad the rust already is, as you cut the bad out, you will find that it goes way deeper than you would expect....... I've seen 3 wagons from the rust belt, and all 3 ended as scrap cars......Sucks, but your better off trying to find a decent Body, and transplanting all your mechanicals.... If You proceed with this project, Look at all rust and probe it for depth of Uglyness, then get as much gone as Possible ....After you have it prepped, paint on a good rust inhibitor before welding in good Metal.....Once past the welding point, undercoat it with something good to get some life out of the car again...... Hope it helped, John in Oregon.... -
Tranny options for an EA81 T
mudrat79 replied to harpua's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What We are trying to figure out is this....? EA-81T is Running an Auto Trany and 3:70 final gears, We are looking to stuff a 3:90 tranny in behind the Turbo, and the problem I am thinking of is that if the EA-81T has as much or more bottom end Torque as the Normally carbed EA-81 then we are going to run out of Motor around 60 or 70 mph.....? So what I want to know is if anyone has ACTUALLY in REAL LIFE Installed and Ran a 3:90 tranny behind the EA-81T.....??????? I already know From Experience that An EA-82T with 3:90 gears Behind it runs AWESOME right up to about 100 mph then flattens out real fast......? So I don't want to stuff one behind a Lower Reving motor to find out it won't work well for HWY driving......? Let me Know, Later , John in Oregon.... -
