  4. I second the Vote for returning it to stock for now.... I know of a Guy who took a 200.00 1982 Brat to a Rally X Here in Oregon.....He got second Place in his Class over 3 other Brat's that had driven all summer in rally X's and several other brands of Suv and Cars only ride that beat him was a Dodge Durango running a Turbo 318 V-8 with a Good driver behind its Wheel.... Learn to drive it Well in the Stock class, And then when your Able to do it right, Beef it all up the way you realy want to.....Then you will apreciate it More for what it Will be....... Later, John in Oregon
  5. Easy culprit could be Coil Pack.... Are you in a Situation where you can get codes checked.....? I had a 97 Impreza Sedan do this to a Customer and The dealer Couldn't figure it out...... Codes that came up were Bad O2 Sensor, Mis-fire in 1-3 Holes, and failed TPS All this stemmed from the Coil being bad...on the 1-3 side At low speed, your car isn't producing enough amperage to make the coil fire correctly. At higher speeds, your Alternator Is turning enough to produce proper amps, but because it was stumbing so bad at lower RPM's, your O2 gets a bad read, and other sensors get a false read..... I scratched my head for several hrs over this when I got a List of all the Codes they gave me, but it All came back to the Misfire in 1-3 replaced the coil pack, cleared Codes, and she has been driving it worry free for over a year now .... Hope this Helps you........John P.s. If you can't get your Ride to somewhere to check codes, Call around and see if you can rent one from a Car parts Store.....Just tell them your Ride is Not driveable, and See if they are willing to allow you to take the Tester to your car or not......? Its Worth a Shot.....
  6. I'm a possible for Saturday Spectating... I was fretting...I thought there was a SCCA Rally Cross that weekend up there...Then saw what it really was on the ORG Board...... I still have to get my new Rally Car Done... Hey Garner, I dropped you an e-mail..... Keep it SHshshs'd.... Later, John in Eugene....
  7. Hey Bud.... What your describing is most likely an area that has been treated with electro-galvinization it is Sheet alum or steel with a galvie coat over it to keep it from rusting so fast...Lol What is happening is with the Rust,Galvi,Heat , and Oxygen your getting just the right combo to get a flash fire going, but as soon as you run out of Hot area, it goes back out.....The White Smoke you see is the Galvinization burning off..IT IS NOT GOOD TO BREATH IT..!!!! Makes you feel like puking.. if you get too much......I know this From experience.... Might be time to invest in a Harbor Freight Sawzall...... the 8 inch blade on those makes quick work of a Car body.. Hope this enlightens you...... Later, Your Bud in Oregon....
  8. A quick fix maybe...? I am not sure , but will your 2.5 intake mount onto the 2.2 motor....? if it will, problem solved....... I swapped a 97 2.2 into a 90 2.2 car, and wiring was different, I fixed it by just swapping the 90 intake onto the 97 motor but as I say it was a 2.2 to 2.2 swap... I don't have a 2.5 in my face to look at intake similarities or differences, so this is just a pure stab in the dark...... Hope you get it , John in Oregon....
  9. Thanks for the visit guys, I sent you both e-mail...... Look forward to hereing from both of you..... Later, John
  10. Morning Noah... Glad to see you got home ok......Have fun at the Coast...???? What do the Home Crew Think of the Ride....?? Talk soon, John in Oregon....
  11. Morning all.... Yes Noah Picked up the Wagon....He is Currently Up on a Mountain with it camping..... We Stuck the 2 1/2 inch exhaust on it yesterday, and All I can Say is WOW..... With the 5 speed Hi-Lo behind the Already Torquey EA-81 Turbo, the Thing breaks Loose almost as easily as FreeRange's EA-82T thats got boost and Intercooler........ The Only downfall to doing this Conversion, is it is Prone to eating front axles if you get on it hard off the line.....It try's to Torque steer real bad, with just a bit of Finess in 1st gear, it is Tame.... I'm sure once Noah gets Back to Montana with it , He'll be posting Later, John and Crew in Oregon.....
  12. Be happy , your just Modding a known project..... Try doing it all from Scratch.....Cause Nobody had Done it Yet.... The OOPS factor Goes up exponetally....... I am Hoping to have My New Project Done in time to Drive it To the WCSS in August......If I'm Lucky, I'll get it Done in Time...... It Is Going to be Another First Out of the Mudrat Lab..... Drive On......John
  13. I am posting this just to let everyone know, that The WEEBLE WOBBLE part of my 12 inch lift was done on purpose..... I knew I was going into some very off camber situations on the Rubicon trip. So knowing I was going to want as much tavel as possible out of the Roo, I stuck the most wore out struts I had under it. Doing this gave me Poor street ability, but AWESOME trail ride......I was one handed steering with my head hung out the window most of the trip Cause it drove and handled so well on the Rocks and Such...... You can with Subaru Struts get a good street ride and still have good trail ride at the same time.....I built Jarods Little Roo up to 8" using stock struts, and He drove it Clear to Yuma On Factory struts.....We actually got the Rear a bit stiff in fact....I get to fix that when he Comes through in May...... There are Many Fabricators Out there, and There are many ways that these cars Can be Lifted........I have My way, And I'm not afraid to drive it or let someone else Drive it Down the Hwy.... Before you Go in any one direction, Remember that you are getting Second and Sometimes 3rd 4th or 5th hand info here on this Board......If you want the Factual truth about any one way, You need to go Directly to the Source that is Building that Style of Kit or Lift..... With that Said, Have fun Building your Ride to Do what you want it to be Capable Of..... Later, John and Crew in Oregon......
  14. Hey Mark..... Most common places for any Hatch To leak are # 1. Bottom corners of Both sides of Windshield.....Look very closely at the Interior Corners for a water line ....It will be odd-color or Dis-coloration of the Black Rubber....if you have it, you can replace Rubber Gasket, or Run a thin Sealer bead of Clear Silicone around upper and Inner portion of Outside gasket line # 2. On Hatches, The Rear side windows with time will Lose their Seal ability due to those windows being opened and Closed so many times..... You will see a water trail here as well... The Hinge side of these windows Will flex out of Wack, thus creating a Loose gasket edge.....You can fix this by Pulling them off and Rebending them a bit.....Be carefull not to over do it.... Hope this helps, John........
  15. I'm sure Richie will get on here sooner or later, He is in Portland.... I'm in Eugene if he Doesn't find you soon enough.....:)Was it a NEW carb, or A reman....? Later, John 541-729-8490
  16. Thanks go out to all you Folks...... I greatly appreciate the feedback..... I Hadn't been on really all week, and Zapar Told me I had a resume on the board...?????? I thought he as Joking.... 18. Ken your Brat needs a real Bumper.... I like the shot though...... Later, John
  19. Hey all....... My Club went out wheeling yesterday and had an exciting hour or so near a creek..... We were driving up a standard logging road when I saw a very narrow trail running up hill beside a creek that you could tell had been very swollen recently with water......It had eroded the ground nearest to the trail pretty good. It had an almost vertical drop from trail to creek of about 25 ft or so.... I went past this tight spot with no issues , hugging the rock wall on the uphill side as tight as I could....Told everyone behind me to come through at their own risk, as it was very tight. We all got through it , and went up to where the trail dead-ended in a pretty nice little spot on the creek.....Good camping.... We All got turned around and started heading back out. One wagon got through the tight spot no problem.Bear in mind, looking out the driverside window, your looking straight down almost 25 ft of bank to the creek.....It had a pucker factor of about 8.... Shane was next in his 98 Forester, which is just a smidge wider than the rest of us, and when he came to the tight spot, he went up the bank a bit harder, thus forcing the driverside to push the soft bad side of the trail off the ledge and thus dropping his driver's front tire over too......his pucker factor just went up to oh say 20+........ I had to hook to him with the winch, and my cars nose in a tree......Get him back off the now too narrow trail, and looked at the situation..... We decided to use a 10-12 foot section of log that luckily had a faily flat face to it . Dug a trench to bury it in the trail at trail level, and lock it into place using the dirt and rock we had dug out.....Got it all done, and Shane got to test it first.... Now at this point, spotter was crusial cause driver side is on the log , and fractions of an inch from rolling off the thing and off the bank into the creek.....the log had to support car weight due to the fact that it was only locked in at each edge by about 1 1/2 -2 feet of dirt the rest was out hanging in the air... Shane got across with no issues, only settled the log in a bit better for the rest of us.... then the other 3 cars came across with no issues ever so slowly...... This little episode was the high point in our day cause snow line wouldn't let us go high to play... and the real 4x4 trail we were going to do , had an old growth tree uprooted and in the trail ... I'll have some pics of the bridge work soon......you'll get a way better understanding of the Pucker factor then..... Later, John and Crew....
  20. Hey Brian Did you get my e-mail about monies and things...? If not, can you call me.... 541-729-8490 thanks, John in Oregon....
  21. Problem is with the Hitachi's, a vast majority of them are DONE/WORE OUT...... In this I mean, even if you were to rebuild one it will still perform poorly due to the Main throttle shaft being wore to a point that at certain points during acceleration it sucks air there, thus causing a bad air fuel mixture...... At idle, this causes odd rpm fluctuations, and during acceleration, it causes jumpy starts, and hard stumbles on take off.... on decelleration it causes backfires, and sometimes engine stall.....???? none of these symtoms would go away if the carb were rebuilt.... Right now I have 2 boxes worth of junk carbs. All have good top ends, and mid sections, but all have bad bottom sections......I've sourced these to rebuild a few, and the cost effectiveness of it isn't there, cause you can still buy a new Weber for less money..... If you Like, your welcome to add me to your emergency list for Folks travelling thru Oregon, I'll give you my personal # for emergency calls thru e-mail if you drop me a note...... I've played with everything from a 2000 Forester on back to a 1974 Sedan.... Later, John in Oregon 541-729-8490
  22. I too had to swap a tranny.... I have a perfect 97 tranny and I wanted to stuff it in a 91 Sedan also......Dealer said it wasn't do-able...... Only difference I found in the 2 is the speedo cable.....On the 91 its mechanical....on the 97 its Electronic, but the electro part of it is outside the trans... so it is just a bolt on Good luck with your's, Be carefull, they are very heavy.... later, John in Oregon......
  23. Hey bud...I am coming to Portland tomorrow for a Car show at Maltnomaw??? County Fairgrounds/Expo Center......Any chance of you yarding that Legacy hood down for me...? IT could be dropped at fairgrounds which are right off I-5 by PIR, or at Ralli-Teks Shop....? I'll try calling you at home...... if you get this tonite, call me....... 541-729-8490 Later, John in Oregon.....
