its possible a smog tech would not detect the weber if it was hidden under a stock air filter box. However, its highly unlikely you will get it past the sniffer. -Brian

Mountain Biking Reno
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Ok guys, i came home tonight with my new bike! http://photos.bydemons.com/v/toys/fsr/ Im stoked and ready to ride! -
Well, i went and looked at the $800 FSR. I couldn't say no. The upgrades alone are worth more than $800. The suspension is pretty soft. Both front & rear is adjustable. The front is 80-100mm. The rear is a fox that has a air fitting. Im uploading pix now. Already have a trip planned for sunday to break it in. I'll need to get a helmet and shoes, or new peddles as the ones on there now are the clip in type and real uncomfortable with my Vans. Pictures soon -Brian *EDIT* PIX http://photos.bydemons.com/v/toys/fsr/

Anything older than 1974 is smog exempt here in CA, so you can get away with putting a weber on them. However, even if its a classic/antique its still required to have the factory smog equipment and original parts in order to pass a visual. Then its onto the real test.
-
Nope. no way to do it. The Weber 32/36 DGEV and DGAV are not CA smog legal. As soon as the tech lifts the hood and see's the aftermarket airbox, he will fail you without even testing it and close the hood. -Brian

Reno NV BBQ and wrenchfest
TheSubaruJunkie replied to ple1ades's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You got a garage? Working on Nevada Soil sucks If I were in the area I'd be happy to help, but I reserve my Reno trips for recreation these days. -
Are you trying to pick a fight or something? -Brian p.s. that IS what google is for anyhow.

Jeremy, those are some great shots! We gotta do something about those wheel covers though. -
The 4" lifts are available for model years 1980 to 1989 GL, DL, Loyale line. The Outbacks and Legacy's and Impreza's can gain a good 2" with strut/spring combo's. -Brian

Well, this beaut just popped up on Craigslist. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/626970586.html So im kinda torn now. Seems like the only thing the other bike has over this is rear disk brake. And the $800 bike has that nifty adjustable rear shock. But I can prolly get this bike for $300 less. Emailed the guy, kinda worried why he mentioned the bike is best suited for parts. Im wondering if 3 years newer is worth the extra $300.

Yeah, since I dont have a wheelin Subaru, why not hit the trails on a bike? Hehe -
Thinking of buying a mountain bike. If I do, instead of a Subaru Meet I'm thinking of a Mountain Bike meet! Who's in? Lake Tahoe, Reno, Sacramento... Im thinking Reno might be a better choice as there's probably snow all over tahoe still.

I got a '93 Legacy Turbo and I was blowing coolant lines left and right (See my thread here: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=31310) I ended up pressurizing the system so bad it bulged and cracked the coolant tank. Thats when I got fed up and pulled the motor. I replaced the head gaskets, along with the timing belts (since I was in there). The car has been running for the past 200 or so miles since I put the motor back in and ive had no problems *knock on wood*

87 rx axle part number please
TheSubaruJunkie replied to ple1ades's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No clue. Your car being AWD will put less stress on the front axles so you shouldnt have as many problems as the FWD guys. If you goto any other auto parts store, you need to make sure you get CV joints for a turbo 5spd Subaru... any year 1987 to 1989 should work. There is a difference, non turbo subaru's have a 23 spline output on the transmission where the turbo subarus have a 25 spline output. Left and right do not matter. Front & rear do matter. -
rx tranny question
TheSubaruJunkie replied to spokanesoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No need to be in neutral. No need to be going in a straight line. The RX tranny is nothing like a standard dual range EA81 or EA82 transmission. EA81 & EA82 dual range 4WD transmissions do not have a center differential. The front diff is connected to the rear output via a shaft. This shaft has absolutly no free play and is locked 50/50 front and rear. This is why you must be going slow, in a straight line and on gravel/mud/snow/ice in order to shift and use 4WD. the RX Tranny on the other hand has an open center differential. It is always in 4WD and the center differential transfers the power to front and rear. being open, it is not locked and you are able to use your 4WD when turning, on pavement, regardless of conditions. Shifting from high range to low range is like shifting any other gear, 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc... makes no difference. Clutch, shift, enjoy! However, when you flip the "diff lock" switch, it takes the center differential and locks it. This makes it act like the other EA Dual Range tranny's by locking 50/50 front and rear. This is when you must be careful and not use it on pavement. Hopefully that has cleared some things up. -Brian -

I've been wanting to buy a bike for some time. I found the GT iDrive and really like the frame design and the concept between the iDrive technology. Then I came across this Specialized FSR and like it just as much, if not better. The reviews on the GT were good, except it was alittle heavy. The FSR reviews said its a great bike and mentioned how light the frame was. I have found one on Craigslist and I think im going to jump on it. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/bik/620124439.html It also has a long list of upgrades. Anyone got some input that would help? Thanks

I read once that Subaru gave the RX a higher low gear to use in rally's. It wasnt so much a low range 4WD, but a half a gear between 3rd and 4th. Instead of having the rally drivers downshift an entire gear, they could clutch, throw it in low, and keep the rpm's where they needed it. When I owned my RX, i used it all the time. On twisty, windy back mountain roads it worked great. Uphill inclines I would accelerate out of low range, put it in high range and still have plenty of power left to keep me going. Damn I miss that car
