Give the lifters a little time to pump back up before using the ATF. Once its warmed up to operating temp, rev the engine to 3k for 15/30sec and see if the tick goes away. If it comes down to using the ATF, you need to drain a qt of oil and add a qt of ATF. Run it for a couple hundred miles, or until the tick goes away.

Probable causes of head gasket not sealing
Turbone replied to Andy FitzGibbon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Decking the block isnt usually necessary, I've never heard of a Subaru block thats been warped. What could be the problem is the head bolts. The holes should be cleaned out prior to re-installing. I spray them out with brake cleaner then run the bolts (oiled) in and out a few times to make sure they seat all the way. When they milled the heads, did they say anything about cracks between the valves? Its only a problem if they go up into the exhaust port, where the water jacket is. -
Make sure you mount it vertically, it might last a little longer. But no guarentees. MSD is a better aftermarket coil, I've been running one on my RX for a while now with no problems.

I forgot you bought Jims XT6:rolleyes: The tranny issue could be the clutch also. Some of this might be resolved by talking to Jim. He might be able to tell you more about the previous maintenance done to it. The brakes might need a bleeding, it surely cant hurt to do it. And I think Bucky is going to donate some of its organs in the near future:-p

Its a form of entertaiment for some. You really dont need to open the thread and read it if you dont like it. But I agree its OT material now.

For starters, at the top of the main page here is a link to the new XT6 site. Lots of info and help there. You really should have bought a different Soob:rolleyes: XT6's are very persnickety and tempermental. 1. From this question and the next, you may have more then a shifter bushing problem. I would try the "Tranny Cocktail" on it. 2. Skip this one. 3. The ER27 has a Idle Air Control valve (IAC). It will cause this problem. I think there is a procedure in the FSM for cleaning it. If not, I know theres something at the XT6 board. 4. Sounds like the brake pads need shims. This will keep the from squeeling. Or the stuff you can buy in the little pouches (blue glue). The ceramics might make it worse too. 5. Go back and look for it? 6. A stock unit should work fine. It would be a good idea to get the flywheel turned.

Well, I guess we can give him credit for being consistant:rolleyes: But thats it.

Welcome to the USMB. First of all, your engine designation is a EA82T (T for turbo). It will have the Multi Port FI. Theres a few sites out there that have all the specs on it. If the tranny is a 3spd, you may want to flush it and put new fluids in it. But I think its most likely a 4EAT, which isnt all that bad. If you have problems with it shifting or being slow, give it a flush. The cooling system is the weak link for this engine. Theres a couple of companies that sell 2 row radiators for this model, I suggest doing this. If theres oil leaks from the front of the engine, a re-seal is a good idea. That way you can replace the waterpump at the same time. There is a limit to the tire size, I believe there is a thread about it in the Offroad Forum. As for the noise, it could be whats called TOD (Tick of Death). Dont worry, its not that bad. The engine has hydraulic lash adjusters(lifters) and if the oil leaks out of them they tick/clatter until they get pumped up again. Sometimes if its a high mileage engine, sludge gets built up and blocks the oil passages to the lifters. One of the remedies is to use some Marvel Mystery Oil during a oil change. Or add some if the oil is low. I think a couple of people have done the spray on liner on thier undercarriages. Anything will help in that dept. Again, welcome.

No more EA82T project cars for me, I'm sick of doing HG's:rolleyes: Yeah, I'm a real pro at them now:-\ I have to say my last job held up real well. It blew the rim off the piston instead of blowing the HG:grin: And that one is a little to far away and it has.................rust:mad:

Turbone replied to scrapdaddytatum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Where did you buy the alternator and was it new or rebuilt? I would take it back and have them test it. Cause it sure sounds like a bad one to me. -
Is that the only color you can do?

Alien in my driveway***Now I need HELP!***
Turbone replied to Turbone's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
I've worked strictly on Subaru's for the last several years (cept for the Mazda truck I traded a few years back), so I guess I'm a little spoiled.....and biased. The Mitsu's are not mech friendly, IMHO. What usually takes me less than 1hr to do (engine pull) took me a 1.5 days to do. I dont care how fast the car is supposed to be, but I do care how long it takes me to do a engine swap:rolleyes: The engine is at my place as of today and we started putting parts on it, getting it ready for the install. It has to be in by this weekend, for reasons stated below. I've got 2 SVX's to work on after this thing is gone. 2 engine/tranny pulls, with the engine/tranny reinstalled in one. I'm going to be a busy boy for a while, but it may be put on the back burner for a month:-\ Tomorrow I go in for a Eval for a 1 month intensive therapy stint. Its supposed to be 8hrs a day, 40hrs a week for 1 month:eek: I may have to take a month off just to recoup after that:rolleyes: It will be close to Winter by then and I know the weather is going to suck:mad: -

replacing rear brake shoes on 84 wagon
Turbone replied to goatman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Take them off and replace them with a set of rear disc. Its super easy to do and you wonter regret it. Get ahold of Baccaruda, he might have some or would be able to find you a set in Spokane. If he cant, let me know. I'll find you a set.......I grow em on a tree in my backyard:-p -
Lucky dude! Thats awesome:headbang: I have a bunch of In Laws in Montegue/Shastina. May have to make a run down that way next year and stop by the Shop;)
