May 26, 200619 yr Making lots of progress on my loyale these last few days but had to get rid of that EA82 and 3AT FWD tranny..... 1: remove front suspension 2: disconnect all electrical, vacuum, and other lines from the engine and tranny 3: remove tranny xmember bolts 4: lower to ground 5: remove engine xmember nuts and pitch stopper 6: raise body above engine haha, worked like a charm! anyway, swapped the 4WD rear end in, well, just the trailing arm assembly. Did you know the 4WD strut mounts are about an inch higher than the FWD ones? when we swapped it over (leaving the FWD struts on it) it sat quite a bit higher. but here's a pic with the FWD rear end in it, an extra engine and tranny sitting in the back. this is about how it's going to sit when it's all done:
May 26, 200619 yr I used a sawzall and got the motor, tranny, suspension, tires & wheels out in 20 minutes. Not a job for the squemish! Oh, wait, you wanted to re-use your body. Never mind:lol:

May 26, 200619 yr it is possible to pull the motor/trans, while the car is sitting. My bro and I took an ea82 motor and 5 speed dual range out of a crashed car.:-\ the car was about 150 feet down this enbankment, steep, oh yea there was about 10'' of snow on the ground too. all we did was disconnect everything, lift it out of the bay, (the two of us) and set it ona dolly, one push the other pull. So I got a 5s d/r and good motor for FREE! crashed car was abandoned for more than a year, its up for grabs!
May 26, 200619 yr i have done 3 subaru engines that way now. i have never used tires, always used cinder blocks. but you get the point. much easyer than pulling out the top -=Suberdave=-
May 26, 200619 yr Author Yea, my dad and I pulled the EA82 out of my blue wagon by hand. but it was way harder, and we didn't want to disconnect the tranny from this one. I've even got an extra crossmember, so I don't think I've even going to mess with this one. we dropped the whole assembly as one, and will probably just use the comealong to drag it up onto the trailer, and take it away. no further disassembly required. I did it this way on my '85 when we parted it out. except we didn't have a rear end in it, it was already sitting on tires in the middle. when we unbolted the engine, the center of gravity moved behind the tires, and we didn't even have to lift, the body just teetered towards the back and up off the motor. but yea, this one's not getting parted out, notice it's location in the garage, not in the yard like it's been for the last couple years.
May 27, 200619 yr Pulled my EA82 with a come along, a chain, and three pipes. Lowered it onto a bucket (oil pan in bucket) so I could work on it. Much easier and more controled than trying to just grab and lift.
May 27, 200619 yr Me and a few buddies rolled an old wagon over so I could take the engine and tranny out the bottom. It was an old burned out hulk, the tranny worked until I broke the diff.

May 30, 200619 yr I did the same when stripping my old GL. lots of jacking and blocking, but it works in the end. dragged the suspension and engine/trany out with a nissan P/U, and then dragged the body away. The body's are wicked light without anything in them.

I done my EA81 (without a gearbox attached) with just my dad and I. Didn't even use rope.. How ever, this was a bad idea, cos after almost getting i out I found the choke cable still connected And my back hurt for a few hours after.. lol Now I have a hoist and it's great. Mainly cos you is like ... SIMPLE ... to align the engine with the engine leveler attachment to fit it back on. The way Numbchux done it here is the only way you can do it on my bros Fiat X1/9... Lookin good chux.
June 7, 200619 yr How do you take a Subaru EA series out of the vehicle with the tranny attached?(sawzall or torch?) I've only done it with the car upside down, ripping off the crossmember and tranny cradle. Once. Never even tried to pull the engine/tranny together the normal way. Haynes and Chilton say I couldn't.
June 7, 200619 yr the engine and transmission come out of the engine bay as an assembly. no need to pull them apart, just pull them at an angle. XT6's will come out the same way as well.
