  1. The ground return for the non-AC fan is through that wire; if it's gone, fan won't work. Also, check the thermoswitch to make sure it closes when overheating. bheinen has it right!
  2. Legacy or Impreza? Either way I'm pretty sure you can go interchange within the model version for quite a few years either way. I usually take the old part with me to PAP to be sure I'm pulling the right thing. But it's amazing how many years carry the same parts for our cars.
  3. Hey, I offered to ship you mine in plenty of time. You never replied.
  4. Glad you have it together now. I haven't heard anything about run orders for Sunday either. It's still not posted.
  5. I'm not sure about the rear diff in a automatic, but the early legacies were 4.111. Try checking the TY number (on the bell housing near the starter) against the chart in the USRM to see which rear it takes. If the chart doesn't list it, run a google search on the entire TY number.
  6. I didn't see a lot of Subarus in Texas last time I was there either...no matter which model.
  7. Are you sure you don't have an oversize axle? Never heard of that before but maybe it could happen. At this point, I'd have it towed to Superior Import Repair and let richierich have a crack at it. There's not a lot of time before the RallyX this weekend. By the way, any idea what the run order is going to be on Sunday? It hasn't been posted yet.
  8. Yes you'll stiil see them around. I owned an '85 bought it new and used it as a 100 mile per day commuter. My father in law drove it from Delaware to Seattle in 1988 and we finally sold it locally since it wasn't appropriate for my work needs. Great little car.
  9. Jacob, I have the axle tool but I'm not in PDX. If you don't find one locally, drop me a UPS shippable address (no P.O. box) and I'll send it to you on Monday or Tuesday and you'll have it by Wednesday. Other than that, before I had the tool, I just removed the brake hub, put back the castle nut and pried forward with two screwdrivers. Then I added large washers under the nut and pried some more. It only takes 6 large washers to pry the axle all the way into place. Then replace the hub and you can take it from there. Good luck; you can return the axle tool at the RX since I plan to be there.
  10. Finally another event coming up. Next event end of this month. Check out http://www.oregonrally.com/rallycross.cfm Weather updates: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=Hillsboro,%20OR&wuSelect=WEATHER It may be posted by now but AWD classes will run in the afternoon; all others in the morning.
  11. No, but take the nut to the tool store with you. They'll know what to get for you.
  12. Sounds like a buggered stud or nut. Try cleaning the threads on BOTH the nut and stud with a tap and die. Threads shouldn't be so tight that the stud spins. Last choice is replace the offending tie rod end.
  13. I'm partial to the Redline and Castrol Syntec synthetics. I do not llike the Lucas gearoil.
  14. I have to disagree with the previous poster since Fuji seemed to select 3.900 vs. 4.111 almost at random regardless of engine version. Check the transmission chart in the USRM against the TY number located on the bell housing (near the starter) or on the fender mounted VIN plate to determine which transmission you need. However, for a Forester 4.111 is correct for all the 5MT transmissions. As to cost, it's a crapshoot. I've paid $500 for a '99 Forester transmission which turned out not to be very good and as little as $100 for a number of "selected" transmissions at Pull a Part. Selected since I found low mileage unit in cars that were obviously running when they were hit. I suspect a decent "rebuilt" can be gotten for under $1000. My experience has been you can usually skip a number of years in either direction as long as you watch the "push" or "pull" clutch option and the final drive ratio. If you change the rear diff to match a 3.900 transmission you can do that also, but you'll take a hit on performance. By the way, before you swap out the transmission, drain and re-fill with a low cost 75W-90 gear oil and see what comes out. Small flakes shouldn't be an issue unless there are lots of them. Then drain and re-fill again with a quality 75W-90 gear oil.
  15. I'd consider using the Brat as a carrot. I.e. All A's and B's might be a bit of a push (unless he's pretty bright) and the occasional C might be a de-motivator. Let him know it's there and if he brings his grades up and continues to do so, you'll allow him to work on it with you as he continues to save money for purchasing it from you. If all goes well, you can give it to him on his 16th birthday (and use his saved up money to purchase insurance and gas) when he gets his learner's permit/license. By then, emissions will not be an issue (do you have enough property so you can keep it without registering it until then?). Whatever you do, keep your hands off it unless he's working with you and with your supervision.
  16. Call Jason in parts 1-866-528-5282 (Subaru dealer in Auburn, WA). Shipping would kill you on this but Jason is very helpful and discounts nicely off list price). If you email him, I'm sure he'd send you back the p/n.
  17. Jerry, I posted it on Friday.http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=102981
  18. Nice shots, Rob. It looks like everyone did a fine job of cleaning up the garbage before they left. Field looks cleaner than when we arrived.
  19. Of the Brat, or of the WCSS11? Yes I do, but it takes me to long to re-size them to post on the USMB, plus the USMB limits how many I can post now. Here's the Show Brat: Some more pics in my Show Brat Album: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/album.php?albumid=178
  20. I could tell you guys were having a blast. I'll look forward to seeing you next year.
  21. My '84 Brat which I bought 4 or 5 years ago has been a primary resident of our garage for all of that time. It's only been on the road for emergencies and a recent repair to the AC system (thanks Scoobywagon). I never drove it more than 20 miles at one time until now. Anyway, it's a pleasure to drive a Brat that isn't old and crotchety. 450 miles round trip and the car behaved wonderfully. AC is working nicely, the engine never came close to overheating, transmission shifts smoothly and has no howls, and shocks work nicely. The Brat ran quietly enough that one time I looked down at the speedo and found I was doing eighty! 224 miles on the return trip in 3-1/2 hours of actual drive time; fully loaded with stuff and two of us in the car; we still got 28 mpg for our gas consumption. Too bad that I need to sell it; I need the garage space. Watch for an ad in the classified forum soon.
  22. Just a comment from me: These are the nicest shirts IMHO for any of the shows. The design is simple and eye catching and blue is my favorite color.
  23. Mudpit was a lot of fun to watch. I saw as many as 25 cars lined up for over an hour waiting their turn to play. Grandstand was almost filled with cheering spectators. Lots of old gen cars this year; many more than in the past. I didn't count them but there were at least a dozen Brats for this year's show.
  24. Some early arrivals to the Show; as of 2pm Friday. More pics at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/album.php?albumid=174
