  1. I've bought two, an EA82T and a custom EA81. The only problem I've had is a collapsed lifter on the EA81. I called, Rick helped (read, walked) me through how to figure it out then popped a couple of lifters in the mail. I was hoping they would be here this weekend so I could do it. So, what I'm saying is not just great motors but there is great service behind them too. Tim
  2. Here's a front shot, not great but shows the difference from then to now. Looks great!!!
  3. I went to the site, looks really nice but I don't think they look like the kind of folks who appriciate off-roading....... . Tim
  4. I may not be thinking of this correctly. But it has a 37.5 amp draw. That is almost everything a stock EA81/82 alternator has. I know you wont use it very long or very often but just something to look in to. Last month "4wheelparts" had Mile Marker winches, buy one get one free....... so bloody tempting!!! If you get it please let us know how it works for you. Tim
  5. Is that $400 each or the set and is a set 4 or 5????? also just a nit-pik thing, on the second paragraph you use the words "over sized off road tire" I think you want rim or wheel in there (like I said, just a nit pik). Later, Tim
  6. I just bought a piston stop, a 14mm brass screw. Screw it into the plug hole and rotate the crank till it stops. I backed it off untill it would just go past then cranked it in a hair until it stoped. TDC. Later, Tim
  7. Welcome to the board. Had some awesome times in Santa Cruz when I was a kid. A rare oddity is a good way to describe what he's got. We have seen them go anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand depending on the shape it is in. It is not a hugely sought after car by the general collector comunity, but to a subby nut it is one of the grails. Can you put up a couple of pictures for us???? Thanks, Tim
  8. Called Rick (@CCR), and he talked me through the diagnosis. It appears that both the lifters on the #2 cylinder have "collapesed". He is sending me out two replacements so I should be back in business soon. So what exactly is a collapsed lifter???? I understand the principal of how they work, but what happens to make them collaps???? Later, Tim
  9. I don't know why CCR didn't get mentioned. You'll pay half what a dealer will charge you and it will be as good or better then a factory short block. http://www.ccrengines.com Emily and Rick are great people to work with and have forgotten more about old subbies then most people will ever know. Tim
  10. My guy is great. He takes the time to look for stuff and he is willing to learn. Alot of the problem is they're not willing to learn about the older cars. I was in last week and talked to the service manager, I asked him if he had any guys that could work on an EA81 "what's that" was his reply. I told him it was an engine. He thought he was going to be cool and stump my parts guy by asking him if he knew what an EA81 was. Well, when Steve (parts guy) says "it's a 1.8l motor" the service manager just got the most priceless look on his face. The point is that when I first started going in Steve didn't have a clue but he was willing to grab the book and look up my parts. I think there has only been one time he has'nt been able to get me a part. Oh, and he set me up with a whole sale accout to, so I get parts cheap . Later, Tim
  11. Hey, I didn't read through all three pages so this may have been mentioned already. There is a stamped "0" on the flywheel and on the pressure plate. Those two marks need to be at least 120º off set from each other or you can get a vibration from there too. Later, Tim
  12. I bought mine from here, two years in a lifted hatch and not so much as a peep!!!!! http://www.automotive-axles.com/ You are right about not being able to aford not to go with new axles. Money well spent in the long run. Tim
  13. Replacing the oil pump would be alot easier, but then again why would it go out in 10k??? The guage shows just over the 25 mark when cold and it drops to just above zero when warm and idleing. Thanks, Tim
  14. I just did a search and came up with this post. I've got a heck of a tick on my hatch, sounds like they do when there a bout a qrt and a half low on oil. So I'm thinking of doing a valve adjustment. Hydro EA81 with about 10k on it from CCR. I've printed the pages listed above, but does anyone have any more insite before I tear into this thing??? Thanks, Tim.
  15. over the winter my Hatch has just ran what I will discribe as "a little off". The milage has been terrible, the engine developed a loud tick, and it just wasn't responsive. Well, the little bugger has decided to come out of its funk!!! I've done a few things to it, rebuilt the Weber a couple of months ago, added some Sea Foam to the fuel, but the real difference came when out of desperation I tossed in a quart of Slick 50. The milage is up to 16.5 on the last tank, she has alot more power (held 60mph in 4th gear going up an incline) and the drivability is just more in the groove:) . The tick has also become less and less (it was a randome tick that was getting worse, now it is going the opposite way). Just thought I'd share some good news for a change..... Tim.
  16. Might want to have a look around here too......http://www.boltdepot.com/DefaultB.aspx. Tim
  17. I'm thinking like a GL with the dealer installed decal package. Kind of like my old "Black Diamond". 33/100!!!!
  18. DUH, I didn't really read the last two posts:rolleyes: . Renner South Dakota, right off I-90. About your half way point. I'll PM our number. Tim
  19. If you absolutly have to have a new motor, CCR is the way to go. They do the best Subaru rebuilds on the planet!!!! http://www.ccrengines.com
  20. I called them about three years ago and they will put any bolt pattern you want on them. BUT they were about $14,000. Thats almost as much as my 05 Impreza!!!!!! Still a cool idea. Tim
  21. Hey I see your on. I'm PMing you now. Thanks, Tim
