Question regarding rotating brakecaliper(piston)
chef_tim replied to bgambino's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you open the bleeder, then rotate it it moves alot easier. Just remember to bleed the system when your done. Tim -

Another fuel pump question
chef_tim replied to jeffroid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had the exact same thing on my 86 wagon. It acted like there was alot of water in the fuel. Eventualy I can to the same conclusion that you did, turn off the key and it seemed to "reset" and it would be fine. I changed the carb and it has beeen fine ever since. Later, Tim -
For $20 and 30 minutes, I'd start with the cable. This is one part I always go through the dealer for. Later, Tim

I used to get down every once in awhile, but I think you get to a point where you've done so much and learned so much that you simply become confident in your car and your ability to fix it. You can only throw so much money at one of these (I for one have invested well over $5000 into my Hatchback). I would trust that car to take me to the ends of the earth and back. Now if something breaks I either just fix it or come here for help and inspiration!!!! No mess, no fuss. So, I guess what I'm saying is, stick around learn some stuff and sooner-or-later you'll reach the level of "SubbaMello" Later, Tim

85 Wagon wont go over 30MPH
chef_tim replied to sregor13's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My first thought was a timeing belt issue. The tensioner could be the squeal, and if it locked up it would have a burned rubber smell. the belt could have slipped, the tortioner unstuck and now the timeing is off a cog or two. All this is theory of course, but something to look at. Do you know when the belts were last changed?? Tim -

I just put my carbon canister back on according to Camerons instructions. After re-jetting and adjusting my Weber I was back down to 14.5 mpg!!!!! There was a serious pressure build-up after I plugged everything off, so bad infact that when I opened the gas cap gas would splash out:eek: . Now I hope it will "breath" correctly. I also checked the plugs and they were just right, a nice toast brown. Pulled the pressure regulator too. I'll let you all know how it turns out, Tim

That is exactly what the 'ol boy at brake shop did for my Sub. It took him a few minutes, then he ordered them for me and sold them to me for cost. I gave him a five for his trouble. Later, Tim

I just bought a set of 205/75/14 Mastercraft Courser OTDs nice aggresive tread, seems like a softer compound rubber and I think Mastercraft is a Cooper made tyre. $355 for all four mounted and balanced. Tim

Hugo, there is just so much that a suspention can handle, I think you've found that point. You could go to a solid axle and probably get a little better, but that poor tortion bar under your Brat is really suffering. Sorry, I know it's not much help, but the car wasn't designed to haul like that. Later, Tim

Does a VLSD match the 3.9 Gen II Brat rear axles?
chef_tim replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's not so much the diff that matters, it is the gears inside that make the difference. If it is a 3.90 VLSD then yes it will work, had one in Vickys car. Later, Tim -
