Rim Question
subaru360 replied to Seand's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI am fairly sure that the 04 outback uses the same brakes as the 02 wrx. So with that in mind, the 15" wheels won't fit over the front brakes.

oil question
subaru360 replied to J A Blazer's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe mobile 1 is just about the worst thing you can do to a subaru engine. You couldn't pay me to put it in. Almost every case of spun bearings I've seen in a subaru was using mobile 1.

Hub vs. Bearing replace, 1997 Outback
I buy the rear knuckle/hub with the lower rear arms still attached at the U-pulls to avoid having to deal with the long bolt. See if your yard will sell it like that. Won't be much more and saves tons of work.

Torque Converter Replacement ?'s
Pull it out all the way and be sure the converter is still hooked to the shaft with the wire clip. Then push it back in with light pressure while turning. It will clunk and drop in 3 times and it's in.

Stealerships replacing heat sheilds??
subaru360 replied to shortlid's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThose are typical dealership prices for any brand car really. Dealerships are in business to make as much money as possible. Doesn't mean Subaru builds a bad car.

Will the engine and tranny fit????
subaru360 replied to BRATDUDE's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXFit as in bolt in, yes. Wiring is another story. Yours is phase 1 the 04 is Phase 2. Lots of differences and not worth it IMO.

2000 Forester Engine Question-Need to Replace Engine!
subaru360 replied to 3Pin's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX99 2.2 phase 2 into a 2000 forester should work fine. I did a 99 2.2 into a 99 forester and it came out well. I swapped the intake over, I think the crank or cam sprocket too, don't remember which, check both and you need a single port y pipe.

Parts compatibility between Outback and Forester

Cylinder Head Bolt Removal, In Car
subaru360 replied to WadeK's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDo not do this. You will smash the pan up into the oil pump pickup. Then it starves the engine of oil and wipes out the bearings. I've seen it 2 times already. Lift the engine under the trans case with a block of wood.

98 obw code and no speedo
subaru360 replied to mountain brat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXTry cleaning the IAC, if the replacement engine sat around, it could have been gunked up and stuck. For the speedo, be sure you plugged all the wires on the top of the trans case behind the engine back in.

HELP! I need a new motor
subaru360 replied to pirata_manu's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have a 96 2.5 engine. It runs and sounds fine has 170K miles. Looks like it has the newest head gaskets in it, although I didn't install them. I want $700, with shipping, it would likely be around $1100. I could ship tuesday if paid today or tomorrow.

So, Talk Me Into an OBS
subaru360 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI personally would stick with the 98 and down OBS with the phase 1 2.2. They are the cheaper to buy and MUCH cheaper to keep running. If you want a legacy outback with 2.2, I have 2 of them right now. I put together as many of them as I can, people buy them as fast as I can put them together, it's a great combination, no idea why subaru didn't make more of them.

93 Impreza 185/75 14 snow tires

93 Impreza 185/75 14 snow tires
Like the title says, anyone ever try 185/75R14 tires on a 93-01 Impreza? I can get a set of 4 brand new snows in that size for $150. 185/70R14 fit fine wasn't close to anything. These are about 1/2" taller.

So, Talk Me Into an OBS
subaru360 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX97-98 OBS is a phase 1 2.2, no head gasket issues. 99-01 OBS is a phase 2 2.2 sometimes they leak externally, but not nearly as common as the 96-99 2.5 phase 1 dohc internal leakage.

So, Talk Me Into an OBS
subaru360 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThey are great, I like them a lot. My brother in law bought a used 98 OBS from somebody on NASIOC about 2 years ago. It had a bad engine, some sort of lifter bleed down issue that nobody could track down. I put in a used 2.2 for him. Engine was $100 at a U-Pull. It's been perfect ever since, not one problem. He likes the space and awd. He always tells me how much he likes the car and how well it runs. He got rid of a much newer Jetta to get the OBS and is now a subie convert and will never get anything else again. He wants a WRX wagon next.

2.5RS P0420 Code
subaru360 replied to Durania's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes on the one after the cat. 9 out of 10 times it fixes the 420 code for me. I do a lot of them.

1990 Legacy, alternately revs and almost dies on cold starts
subaru360 replied to zyewdall's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou can spray carb cleaner into the big hose that leads to the iac valve to clean it out. Do it while its running. You may have to work the throttle to keep it running.

Wow that sucks. Nothing ever seems to get stolen in the area where I live, so I don't think about it much.

Interested in purchasing a '99 legacy L
subaru360 replied to Snoman86ss's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe 99 phase 2 2.2 that this car has can have external head gasket leaks. That should be checked out. You don't really have to do a water pump with the belt, they rarely fail, I've seen one bad subaru EJ engine water pump in all my years working on these cars. More important is to have the tensioner and all the idler pullies for the belt checked, if they are noisy or leak grease, replace them, the tensioner is wet on top replace it. $3000 is a fair price.

K&W head gasket and block repair question
subaru360 replied to Benfolio's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCrap in a bottle will not fix it. The problem is exhaust gas going into coolant. Nothing in the coolant will stop this. It'll just clog everything else up like the radiator and heater core. It'll cost you more in the long run. Cometics are not going to work out for you. The finish on the block and heads has to be perfect for those gaskets to work. Better than a local machine can do, race engine pefect. The JDM engines come over with the old style head gaskets in them. They blow too. I've got one sitting here that went 5,000 miles and blew the gaskets. Buy new head gaskets from the dealer, they are $40 each and will fix it for good. It's not a hard job, I have idea why it's made such a big deal about.

I'm stumped. '95 EJ22 won't start
subaru360 replied to Numbchux's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had one act like that. The cat was plugged solid. Take out the front O2 sensor and see if it revs up.
