  1. 99-05 2.5 sohc are all about the same. You just have to be sure your cam and crank gears are the same where they trigger the sensor, might have to swap them from the old engine. Use the complete intake manifold with all sensors from the old engine if using different years, there are some small differences there.
  2. 2000 for legacy then another change a few years later. 2008 for impreza 2009 I think for forester.
  3. Does not matter if you align or balance first. They do not affect each other in any way. You can do an aligment yourself with a level floor, 2 foot bubble level, string, a ruler and 4 jackstands that will come out just as good as one done on a $20,000 machine. I do them all the time. It's all in the operator, not the equipment.
  4. 5 speed? Did you pull out the clutch cross shaft? Take out the starter, pull out the 10mm allen plug in the bellhousing, thread in an 8mm bolt and use that to pull the shaft out.
  5. It's older phase 1 EJ25D heads and intake manifold. If Outfront says it has an STI shortblock, it probably does, they are a reputable business.
  6. I end up with a lot of blown up EJ25s. Sometimes I get $50 for them. Sometimes nobody wants them and I scrap them and get around $20. If you really want to deal with the hassle you could part it out and make some money, but it's a pain.
  7. I've been doing it like that for years, no failures. Works for me. I have seen them come loose from lesser tightening methods than mine.
  8. German spec. Gutentight. 2 foot pipe to tighten. 4 foot pipe to remove. Seriously.
  9. 4 less bolts, leave them out, that's the only difference doing a 2.2 swap into a 99. No need to drill/tap anything, just grind down the head of the lower starter bolt for clearance and put it in from the bellhousing side before installing the engine. I have done at least 5 phase 1 2.2 into 99 legacy swaps. It's no big deal.
  10. The only difference I've noticed is different brackets for forester/impreza vs. legacy/baja. Don't expect much from the little sub, you notice it, but not much.
  11. I've had the cables out while doing other work like the cars I've converted from fwd to awd. It's not too bad of a job. But your shoes are probably worn out or out of adjustment rather than stretched cables.
  12. I driven, many, many gen 2 legacys with both 5 speed and auto. The auto is way better for towing and offroad simply because you can 2 foot it and have better control. 5 speed to auto is a tough swap. Best way to do it is to get a whole bulkhead harness. The tcm adds a lot of wiring.
  13. So they are just standard studs? ARP and Moroso also make extended studs that might work, just need to know the hole diameter and thread size.
  14. I use the updated gaskets from Subaru. They have no leakage or overheating issues anymore.
  15. Sure, I only have 2 wrxs for sale now. I'm planning on getting some more outbacks soon.
  16. $7k is NUTS for a 99 outback in NJ. I sell them all the time here in PA with either new headgaskets or a 2.2 swap for $3-4k.
  17. It will work. I've done it. The shape of the pistons are different and it will drop the compression. But it runs normally. Use 99 head gasket to ensure proper piston to head clearance.
  18. If you are working on a rusty car, I recommend getting creative with the routing rather than try to remove more rusty parts and breaking more stuff trying to follow the factory routing.
  19. I've noticed that there are a few different thicknesses of the axle bars. A skinny one, a thicker one that necks down before the boot and a real thick one that I usually on see on the wrx.
  20. You can swap just the struts/springs. I'd also swap the rear trailing arm brackets, they center the wheel in the wheel well. The outback also has frame spacers, different trans crossmember etc, but most people don't bother with all that. Be sure to align it afterwards, you may need aftermarket camber bolts to get it right.
