First Post: What to look for/avoid in a '80-'85 Wagon?
XSNRG replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Some things I like to see, may seem obvious. Lower miles, 100k to 150K. Some sign of proper maintanence, such as, Records if available. If not, Overall clean appearance. Genuine Subaru parts such as belts, hoses, oil filter. If not OEM, should be good aftermarket and in good shape. Even tire wear. No funny noises, pulling or jerking when driving, no big oil leaks. I alway look underneath the car to see if there are obvious signs of abuse, such as, a lot of dents scratches and scrapes to the underside, unibody of the car. Try every accessory on the car to make sure they work properly. Check the axles boots, fluid levels, etc. If all of this looks good, take it to a respectable mechanic for a inspection and run a carfax report. I'm sure there are many other things I'm forgetting. Welcome aboard and good luck finding a car, there are some nice ones out there in this area and reasonable. Mark -
flywheel lightening at home
XSNRG replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
monk, you didn't read what I was saying, my fault, I was changing the subject a bit. I did say the flywheel and clutch, not the flywheel and crank. The pressure plate will go on the flywheel in more than one position. Even though these parts are balanced individually, they are not perfectly balanced and the procedure I described intends to offset this slight imbalance. I will included the complete passage from the FSM I referenced for your benefit. QUOTE: "a. When installing the clutch cover on the flywheel, position the clutch cover so that there is a gap of 120 degrees or more between "0" marks on the flywheel and clutch cover. ("0" marks indicate the directions of residual unbalance)" This is from section 2-10, page 9 or the 1987 FSM. -
Did you see how clean that car is under the hood?

Saw an RX on the road! Rare round these parts.

Any RX that gets to live a life of Rally Cross will think it's died and gone to heaven... -

Always nice to meet a Chevy guy, I'm one too. Don't know alot about the 400's though, Siamesed cyclinder wallls have always been a turn-off for me:brow: -

Good pictures, compliments to the photographer! Looks like we have the Forester boxed in pretty good. Whose white wagon? Is that, johnofscio? Gotta love those Hatches:D -

In PGT, Andy Mohr finished first in his '89 XT. The car runs good with a 4EAT and Andy is a excellent driver. Jake and I were second in our '87 RX and a Subaru RS (can't remeber the drivers name) finished third followed by several hundred thousand dollars worth of WRX's:burnout: Even though it was generally slow due to the slick conditions it was still a blast. It was very muddy! I thought the track was the best of the year. I also thought it was the best for spectating. My favorite was the Volvo that spun out just before the finish line and backed up through the timing gate! It was a great turnout in general with a lot of rigs I haven't seen before. Including several toyota type 4X's a couple 2X's and even a huge early 70's 3/4 ton chev 4X4 with a six! It was really cool to see all the older Soob's there. Lot's of Brat's and wagon's and there was even three three door coupes. Can't wait for next year. I'm still voting for the USMB or Hatch Patrol/Oregon Offroad Club Rally Team. Rumors are there will be Field Racing in November. -
flywheel lightening at home
XSNRG replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It seems I recall the old chev 400 small blocks had the flex plate and crank balanced together, it's the only one I recall, there may be others. Subaru flywheels and clutch covers have a mark on them that indicates the heavy side of the part (after balancing) the marks are to be offset from each other as much as possible. (from the FSM) I have mixed and matched many Subaru cranks, flexplates and flywheels with no ill affects... -
how can i tell if spfi or mpfi
XSNRG replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All turbos are MPFI. -
Yes, you would need a 5 speed to go with a XT-6 clutch. The shaft on the XT-6 is bigger, with more splines than the 4 speed.

Is there a schedule available? I can't get on the ORG website. Anybody know if PGT is morning or afternoon? -

I mailed them about the RX application, should be the same as any EA82. They relied, saying I would have to mail in my front diff and it would be $349. It looks like they don't have specs for a EA82 front but can and will make one. BTW, I picked up the mag, the article was interesting... -

I have one, it's a '85 GL-10 2WD wagon with MPFI and no turbo. It's the only one I've seen other than XT's. -
On my '82 it's on the front of the tower, near the fender, it's black and has green, blue and red wires with a blue plug? I think.

Snowstormer, Washington or Arizona? I think I saw those Discoverers at Wally World for $67 ea. I'm getting 5:headbang:

I did mine this way, similar to what Baccaruda was saying. I removed the heat shield from the bottom of the pipe, directly under the cat, it's about 3" X 4", has a few (sloppy) spot welds, very easy to remove and I was able to leave all the upper heat shield in place. Next I cut three cuts into the bottom of the pipe with a air chisel and bent it open, this gave me about a 2" X 2" hole to work through with direct access to the lower side of the cat guts. Busted everything our and then welded it back together. It took all of about 30 minutes (plus R&R) and looks like it hasn't been touched. You can't tap on it either since it has a heat shield all the way around it:brow:

It's on top of the right strut tower.

I'm on board with this. In addition, I'm willing to donate cash as I did for the previous board.

Just gotta get this off of my mind

Don't sweat it, some people are really negative and have to complain, no reflection on you. I've met people that aren't happy unless they are complaining, it give them some kind of self importance, necessary to thier survival. Just be happy you didn't sell him a Ford! -
XT6 Clutch Kit in '86 GL 5sp Right?
XSNRG replied to SovereignMK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, I found some more info. The GL EA82 and XT-6 clutches are the same diameter and the same number of splines but are different kit numbers. From what I've heard, I'm 99% convinced that a GL 4X4 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate are interchangable with the XT-6, all or part. The Xt-6 flywheel is (6 lbs?) lighter than the EA-82 counterpart. I'm guessing the XT-6 has a stiffer pressure plate? I guess I'm still in the dark:rolleyes: -

XT6 Clutch Kit in '86 GL 5sp Right?
XSNRG replied to SovereignMK's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was wondering the same thing. I was reading this other post and it sounds like a direct bolt on. Qman is using one in a Brat with a EA82 trans. Here's a link to the other thread with discusion about the XT-6 clutch if you haven't already seen it. http://usmb.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5300 BTW, do you know baccaruda? He's in Spokane too. Mark -
got an rx . . few questions.
XSNRG replied to 88rxsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
88rxsedan, That is a rare car by any standard. I see about 150 Subaru's every day and rarely a RX and I have NEVER seen a '88 sedan! I've been looking too, I really want one. Be sure and replace the rear main seal when you do the clutch. Corky, I have a '87 RX sedan. It is full time 4wd but does not have the body kit and it's burgundy, not white. I think maybe the white sedans came out mid year with the coupes? -
Calebz, that's true for most turbo cars... A couple other things I didn't see mentioned, GL's had: electric mirrors chrome strip on side moulding and bumpers Loyales didn't standard I would call the Loyale a DL with a tach Loyales were available with the full time trans in '90 and maybe '91, 4 speed auto with turbo Not all Loyales had auto seatbelts or high consoles Some '85/'86 cars had painted bumpers, GL-10 2wd Most Gl/ Loyale body parts and lights will interchange
