how does one get involved with rally racing?
XSNRG replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Rally Cross is the entry level class for Pro Rally. If you want to race off road this is where you start. There are few requirements, most cars, even bone stock, are accepted. The car should be safe but no roll cage is required. You do need a helmet. Try it, you'll like it! -
There is a lock switch on the 4EAT but it doesn't lock the center diff, it's locked (or controlled) by a selenoid controlled by the trans ECU. The lock switch on the shift console locks the car in low gear. There is no 1st gear position on the shifter, it's 23DNRP. If you going down a steep hill the switch will lock it in low so it won't shift to second. However the trans ECU will override the lock and shift into 2nd gear at 6500 RPM to prevent damage to the engine. Although I read about this in the manual, I have tested it first hand many times in my wifes old '90 Loyale turbo

Warning, if you start your car with the screwdriver make sure your column isn't locked before you speed off down the road:burnout: I just did two of these. Pull the steering wheel, the column covers, the combination switch, release the cables for the tilt, now you have plenty of room to get at the two bolts on top, there are two on the bottom also. Nothing hard about it, I found the key is unhooking those cables, they are easy to get back on and then you can easily access those bolts.

used Japanese engines
XSNRG replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've had four of those import engines, all EA82 turbos. The first one had water in a cylinder so I sent it back for another prior to installation. The second one looked really good inside and after resealing, I put in my wifes Loyale wagon for 50,000 trouble free miles. It was the best running turbo I ever drove. I kept telling her I was going to take the engine out and put it in my RX. Aftere 50k it was ready for a reseal and we were selling the car so out came the engine, reseal and now it IS in my RX. The third one went in my '88 GL-10 turbo and it looked like new inside and is still running good with about 50,000 miles. The last one I got was hard to get, they are getting scarce. We pulled it apart to seal it and it looked bad inside but we went ahead anyway. after getting it together it ran like crap, we sent it back and got a CCR engine, it runs like a top. I'm skeptical about getting another EA82(t), I'm afraid they are down to crap that has already been installed and returned. The guy at engine place said they will take parts from two or more and try to make one good one out of the returned stuff to try and get some money out of it. I bought a '85 carbed engine from the PAP for $75 out of a car with 100k that hit a wall and that engine ran like brand new. My friend got a EJ22 for $200 and it ran like new too. I think from now on, with the prices and scarcity of the older soob engines from Japan, I think I would rather roll the dice with a JY engine, they are a hell of a lot cheaper. BTW, If they never changed the oil, wouldn't that void the warranty on the engine??? -
Junkie, I think that's what Miles is saying....

The auction ended on the 23rd with no bids. Gen I's don't bring the money that the Gen II's do. That is a nice Brat and if it's what you want the price is probably close to what it should be.
-
Yep, the same:wave:
-
Yes, Regan's Brat sold on ebay to a USMB member!!! Obviously, the story must be acurate!!!
-
WOW, more pictures and tech write up that green Brat! The white one is very nice too, we don't see many in that condition around here, most are well used. There was a third Brat, although the '82 is a Gen II, it is unique in that it was the only Gen II brat with the dual headlight grille and the third eye.

Maybe it's a '85 with a '84 production date? I know where there is a '84T for parts...

Yay!! Finally found a full size spare!

Those Brats don't have bumpers:eek: The bumper ends finish directly to the body. Never saw those before, cool. Definately some nice Soobies:D -
I've seen a lot of RX's F/S lately, CHEAP! Let him put it in the paper, I bet he doesn't get one call!!!

Head Gasket screwed, Carb sucks, god hates skeet
XSNRG replied to skeet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Skeet, How bad is it leaking? It's not uncommon for a little oil to seep from the head gasket. There is always oil on it because of the horizontal configuration. The cam cases can and do leak alot. Sometimes oil from the cam cases can look like it's coming from other places. It's funny how much oil can leak from there since there are no GASKETS! Did the mech do a compression or leakdown test? Any water in the oil or oil in the water? Exhaust gas coming from the radiator? Has it been overheating or loosing coolant? Excessive steam in the exhaust? It sounds like you know the mech but they are trained to turn carb gaskets into carb replacements and carb replacements into engine overhauls...Good luck -
That sucks Bradd, sorry to hear of your misfortune.

swapping XT engine into GL10 wagon
XSNRG replied to baccaruda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm with BB, most of your existing sensors should be similar and work on the spider intake. And your computer can't see the intake manifold, sooo as long as your existing sensors are there it should work. Simple, as BB said is good:burnout: -
The last year they made the Gen I Brat, '81, they were available with a EA81 and a dual range 4 speed trans.

requesting ea81 ignition lock *removal* how to
XSNRG replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just ruined two to learn the right way, I tried to take the lock mech out of the unit but it fell apart in my hands. Here's what I did, the third time. :-\ :eh: :madder: Remove the steering wheel, the insturment panel surround, the steering column cover, remove the combination switch, unhook the cables for the tilt wheel, remove 4 10mm bolts holding the lock unit to the column. Reverse order for installation. -
Is this a complete, dealer installed style kit? With instruction? I'm not a expert on the EA81 stuff, Qman, McBrat or others should probably throw out some numbers. I would think that if it's a complete, installable kit with instructions it could be worth $50 to $100. I might be way off, feel free to flame away if so.

Nice work Zap. Yes, there was a white Sti, I think it was witte driving it? There was also a blue STi that ran in PGT (not legal to due adjusted engine displacement). He ran PGT at Hood River and was bumped to open. I'm sure they will bump him again, that means two Sti's in your class. If he does get bumped, that gives him a unfair time advantage given the course conditions. I doubt that it will affect the top finishers though. Everybody else looked great on the couse:headbang: Maybe we should start a USMB Rally Team USA?
