Good ideas on building a chassis for the Brat?
MorganM replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Time to take a reality check on that future mods list... Even doing ALL ( every single bit ) of this yourself will cost hundreds of dollars (thousands if you dont have all of the proper tools). Do you have that kind of budget at your disposal? How about the months (or years?) it will take to build it? Those are the limiting factors in this project... -
For sure I was gonna call yall yesterday when we were back in SD and not far from your Subaru Depot. Then I realized I left my Dad's cell phone locked in my trunk back in Minneapolis along with my laptop that had your number on it!

I know everyone wants a suspension lift but you really don't need one on these cars. A body lift is plenty of lift for a Loyale to put in bigger tires and therefore gain better ground clearance. I continue to be impressed with what my Subaru can do with just a BYB 3" body lift, 29" tires and a whole lot of RPMs.

RAM gets tossed around everytime someone talks about 'real' porformance upgrades for EA81. Just like every other engine; wanna go fast? Well how much money do you have? On timing belts I'm with Calebz. I know why I broke a timing belt and it was not becuase EA82's just eat belts. Ideler gear bearings siezed, stripped 2 teath and threw the belt off. Why did it sieze? It's never been replaced and has almost 200,000 miles on it; then I tossed lots of mud and water on it for a few years. That makes bearings angry...

The Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources is going through and doing an inventory and reclassification of all state forests. As a member of the MN4WD Association I signed up to inventory Solana state forest. What we will be doing is offroading the trails all day and marking on maps what ones we want to keep. We then submit written comments to the MN.DNR requestiong a re-review of these trails for consideration into the final draft plan. Current draft plans from the DNR are relased and can be found here: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/mgmtplans/ohv/designation/status.html To put it simply we are getting nothing compared to ATV and dirt bikes (OHM). We fought hard in one forest last round; had written comments and we had represenatives at the public hearing who debated for more trails... we were awarded 5 miles of truck (ORV) only trails. Five is better than 0 that they originaly drafted but thats not much when they turn around and award 70+ to ATV/OHM. Come on up and help us save existing trails for fair use of state forest trails! This can also be some good experience as National forests are doing the same thing under the Federal government and a lot of States are doing similar proceedures on State forests.... maybe right in your own back yard! I'll post details and maps soon, Thanks!

Yeah we tore it up out there. Only had one hill I had to try twice and only had to use the winch once to get me out of a mudy spot. Next step methinks are mud terrains and a locked rear end. Those allterrains just turn into slicks with any mud. Open diffs faild me in two spots; had to have McBrat and my friend Andy help spot me through some better lines... just gotta work it a little different with no locker  Glad I went even tho I spent way too much money and it was a 6 hour drive one way :drunk:Wife says I can't buy anything for the Subaru for a long time... we'll see about that

Yeah I prolly should have. When I came down FRI It was pretty late and I just wanted to get to the site. SUN coming home I didnt even want to mess with it; just get home, get a shower, and get some sleep. I figured instead of doing a repair on the road 5 hours away I should just come get it in one for sure trip. Just got home with her on the tow dolly. F350's sure can pull a Subaru at 85 MPH good

Can I put an EA82 Turbo into 92 Loyale
MorganM replied to silverflash's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The short and easy answer is, Yes... It's not a bolt on upgrade tho; this is a project. -
What? Time to ditch that 3AT! I can light up my 29"x8.5" tires just fine That's with a stock EA82 SPFI and 5spd dual range.

4-link setup, how does it work?
MorganM replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Also I wouldnt post a question on there unless you like getting flamed from every angle -
Glad to see I'm not the only one with that philosophy on subaru oil leakage

Oh man mine are too; manual steering RULES It was a great time and I'm glad I went... even tho I'm about to throw down $200 to get my rig home

low oil pressure = new gaskets?
MorganM replied to LUVMYBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Find out if your oil pressure is REALLY that low before you try to fix something that aint broke -

I'd get a new sending unit or a whole new guage. Mine finally went out on me this weekend and it was reading how you describe before it finally went out. You'll know when your oil pressure gets to low... the lifters get louder than dual straight pipes! -
...then you'd be flabergasted at where a lifted one will go I've taken mine many places where Jeeps go wheel'n. Prolly up a few trails they wouldn't go... those ATV trails get real tight!
-
Yep made it back last night. Nothing broke on the way down or on the trails. I threw a timing belt on the way back in S.Dakota just north of Vermillion/Yankton exit. Working out a recovery plan. Leaning towards getting a truck and trailer/dolly/tow bar. I'd say more but I should be calling places right now McBrat has some good pics to post.

One thing to consider is your O2 sensors. I belive you have 2; one before and one after the cat. ? Youll want to get 2 bungs welded in so you can screw in the O2 sensors. Otherwise your Check Engine Light will be on 24/7 and your gas milage will drop. ALso if you are nuking the cat you better chop out all that other crap and put on a higher flow muffler or really you aren't doing much.

Strictly Custom: Bumpers with 6ton Clevis's!
MorganM replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Picnic benches! I LOL IRL when I read that cuz its so true Welp here's some numbers: $45 in raw steel $45 in hardware $8/ea on clevis $2/ea gloss black farm implement enamle spray paint $3/ea weld'n stick $11 for 1/2" drill bit (gotta hog out the original holes for the 1/2" grade 5 bolts) *counts on fingers and tows...* That's about $127 dollars. Now time was about 10 hours total (split over 2 nights) Things that helped A LOT was Archemitis being able to weld and using his dad's bridge port and B.A.D. Some things that could have cut cost: I bought way too much hardware. I only needed 8 of those bolts/washers/nuts but I bought 13 of each. Cheaper Wal-Mart (.97 cent) spray paint. Using someone elses 1/2" drill bit. ((ps: still wondering what the B.A.D is? well the first word is Big and the last word is Drill )) -
tire size with pug wheels and r&r transmission
MorganM replied to wingnwing's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I agree; after seeing that 235/75 R15 (that's 28.9" tall) bolted on with that toyota rim (which as 3.5" back spacing) and it barely rubbed on anything... unlifted -
Per tech inspection on a lot of offroad parks you need 'bolt on tow hooks with 1/2" grade 5 bolts or better'. Those stock plastic, foam and stamped sheet metal bumpers have little to 'bolt' hooks onto Time for custom bumpers! Archemitis did all the fabrication work to my design. Pretty simple really; just some mid-grade steel, 1"x2" C channel, 2" OD pipe, 1/2" grade 5 bolts/nuts/lock washers, a B.A.D and a mean arc welder. Decided to get some pictures of it on my lunch break. What fun are shots of it sitting in a parking lot or my driveway however? We need some shots in action! Approach and departure angles improved: Front Bumper with Clevis's: Closer View of Front Bumpers: This is a funny angle. The front of the car is on the left side. This is looking in through the fender well at the bracket bolted on going upto the tubes. Brackets are bolted on per tech inspection requirments and clevis is bolted on the bracket directly: Rear Bumper with Wheel Stuffed: Stragiht Shot of Rear Bumper: Close up of guset next to bracket on pipes: Can't wait to test them out at the offroad event in Iowa this weekend!

As only Strong Bad could put it.. Totaly awsome!

What's the worst they will do? Say no... Might as well talk to a regional manager atleast. I would approach them nicely and have an estimate from a shop saying what the cost is. They could stay instead of 'wendy's puddle; wendy's problem' that 'your fan broke your radiator; your problem' After they say no you should call your insurance company... you have comprehensive coverage, rgiht? That would cover this as a pudle is an 'act of God'. Personaly I'd just suck it up and drive on. Just the other day I was leaving the militatary base. Went to pull out of my parking spot and my bumper/air difelctor got cought on a peice of rebar sticking up from the parking stopper. Ripped off the cover from the bumper/fender and made a real mess. Not really the facilities fault... kinda my fault cause I did it. Just another crappy day at work for me!
