The carb model really shouldn't be that slow. Your making 15 more HP than my Brat, which is about 20% more I would say. Your car weighs 20% more or maybe a little less. My Brat is not slow. Doesn't even have a weber on it yet. I mean - it's not a speed demon, but it does get up and move - even with a 4 speed. Your engine may need some tune up done on it. Vacuum advance units are notorious for getting cracks in the rubber, thus not working as well as they used to. Cost to rebuild is about $25 from the guys I linked to above. If you going to do it, you might as well have the disty shaft re-bushed at the same time - about $35 if you dissasemble it for them. GD

Looking for good head gasket sealant

Headgaskets are normally installed dry. No sealant is required or recomended. GD -
EA82 to EA81 swap( I know I know, AGEN?!?)

Oh yes - that's right the carb fuel pumps are only 2 psi. So if you want to run a weber - get an aftermarket fuel pump that puts out about 5 psi. GD -

what engines fit gen 1 brats
GeneralDisorder replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My feeling is that a built EA81 can match and even exceed the HP of the EA82 Turbo in stock form, so unless you intend to try and get more HP from the EA82T, A built EA81 without the trouble of the turbo or wiring and such would be the best choice. And if you do want to go turbo, then the trouble to put the EA82T in is nearly as much trouble as putting in the EJ22T. In fact - the EJ22T is smaller, and should fit better than the EA82T. Plus you get the AWD drivetrain - nice for a street only car. That's just my thought. Of course the EA82T would be cheaper than the EJ swap. So that could be a factor. GD -
now that it's cold my car wont start

You can install a manual choke apparently - someone just mentioned that. Ether really isn't good for your engine. Fix the problem as soon as you can. GD -

You can put the SPFI from an EA82 on the EA81. Pretty simple system the SPFI - and no angle problems. GD -
Oh - sorry - here's the link: http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo72 And here's some other shots: http://usmb.net/gallery/albup19 John does a real good job - that I can vouch for - and tho I have not yet bought a PK lift, they are also extremely tough. Seen a lot of cars with his lifts. If I were you I would talk to John first, since he's pretty much local for us. If you want to install it yourself, then I'm pretty sure he can just make up the kit, and you can go pick it up. Great thing is if you have any problems, he's not far away, and could correct it quickly. GD

Could they be refering to the color? I know that the colors are rated in temperature 4800k and 7000k could be the color temp. That would mean that the 7000k is much whiter. GD

thick oil noise
GeneralDisorder replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
bad tick = low oil pressure = time for a new oil pump and seals. Sometimes just the seals can do the job, but for the hassle - better just to drop in a new pump - $60 - $70. GD -
Yeah - John can do it. For a reasonable price too. You can save a bit of money probably by having him build the kit and installing it yourself. Or PK makes AWSOME kits too. It's just that John is local for you (and me). See the pics of mine in the image gallery. (With Johns lift) GD

Looking good - hope we see some knarly tires on it soon? I like the camo paint job - and with those all-terrains it looks like an urban assualt vehicle. Something you would see in mogadishu or something. hehe You need a .50 cal for the back.... GD

You can get an EA81 up to the same HP output as a stock EA82T pretty easily. Cam grind - deck the heads, and put in some EA71 pistons. With the weber and a free flowing exhaust - your there. GD -
thick oil noise
GeneralDisorder replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thick oil shouldn't hurt anything - I run 20w50 in all my rigs. They love it. Is it a knock, or a tick? Lifters generally make a ticking sound. Knocking is generally rod bearings. GD -

Dude! Grab a flywheel from the JY - I got one the other day for $11 (+tax cause it was in WA). Of course you could use the EA82 flywheel too - just have to grind a little on the housing. The digi dash has no computer to my knowledge. But some of the sending units are different. I don't know if the EA81 digi sending units are compatible with your dash or not, but it's worth a try. The coolant temp sensor I know is different - I've had to reaplace that on my EA81 digi. I've also completely removed the ECU on my EA81 digi car cause I put on a weber - no need for the ECU anymore. Didn't do a thing to the dash. GD -

Manual choke conversion for Hitachi carb?
GeneralDisorder replied to stephenw22's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sweet! Who makes the kit? Is it a universal one or something? I would love to do that with my Brat. Friggin choke works like mollasses. GD -
Snaped a rear stub, now what?
GeneralDisorder replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Eeww - sounds nasty - maybe you should work on my bumper instead - less frustrating J/K Well - if it twisted the splines right where it slides into the gear - could just be the splines holding it like McBrat was saying - maybe have to replace the side gear too eh? Since maybe it twised the side gear's splines as well - wouldn't think that would be fixable. Here's a thought - maybe the splines didn't twist all the way down - just at the opening. If you got in there with a die grinder and ground out the top of the stub, and some of the splines too, you might get it out that way. And you might save the gear if you don't grind too much of the splines away. Just a thought. GD -
