  1. I went to the Junk yard and picked up a FPCU. The numbers were different on the 83 Subie that I got it off of but the carb was the same and the wiring configuration was the same as I have. I didn't work:banghead: The FPCU I have has....... 429547014 on it. (1982) The FPCU I purchased had 429547022 on it. (1983) Anyone familiar with compatiblity issues with the Fuel Pump Control Unit? Could I have gotten lucky enough to picked a bad one from the JY? I want to make one more attempt tomorrow to find one that works. If this don't work I may have to make something..... Any help appreciated Glenn 82 Summer, fuel issues..... 01 Forester, fuel economy issues......
  2. What do you need another Sub for? Your old one has more character now. Lots of us don't have a straight panel on the vehicle! I see it as a great starting platform for an OFF-ROAD BEAST! Let the project begin! (did someone say  sawzall???) I carved mine up and it's happier now! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  3. Poof! Yep it happend again...... Smoke and flames were more white this time. Using a grinder to cut the rear floor/hatch area and you guessed it....... I hate this! I think my car is possessed! I has got to be the galvanized metal thing. Nothing else could explain the wide spread area that has a propensity to combust. Now, badly in need of fresh underware, my cutting is finished:brow: What a strange experience....... Glenn, Shaken but not deturred
  4. Try SubaruBrats site, http://www.subarubrat.com/ He prefers Rancho stuff. I used BugPac VW Baja shock on my buggy, like them so....far. Good luck, Glenn
  5. Got H.F. Sawzall and I have a 8" demolition/rescue blade. That's how I got the engine/tranny/suspension/tires and wheels out in one Big piece. LOL I've been known to shoot tracers??? The ones with the bright red/pink glow at night. I've also been known to use phosphoric acid to treat rust problems. Putting two and two together, is it possible for old phosphoric acid to burn like phosphors? I don't recall treating this area of the Sub with acid in the past, but I could have? Being a pyro at heart, I think I may pull some rust out and gather the kids around (for $5, at a safe distance) and see if metal will burn? Armed with a fresh change of underware and my sawzall I plan on making another attempt at the cut tonight.
  6. On-road, without the bar, I think the tires seem to roll under easyier giving unexpected results in turns. If I was on the road, I'd keep it and make a disconnect. I'm strictly off-road now and I wouldn't have it on. Disconnect it and tell us what you think? Glenn, 82 Hatch, well it started that way.... 01 Forester, still is a forester....
  7. The first sales must have fallen through, current bid is a hundred bucks! Should be worth more than a hundred bucks. Think of the adventures with a lift kit and 4 wheel steering? Why do people do these things:confused:
  8. Great Vids, I wanna play too! Makes me wish I was down under. Stay just out of the main track and you'll make it up! Glenn, 82 Hatch, well it used to be... 01 Forester, single range tranny...
  9. How many times have you caught your Subie on fire in one day? So......I'm working on a Secretmobile which all I can say is....it involved cutting the inside of my old Hatch with a grinder. All the upholstry, dash, panels, carpet, insulation is out of the car. There is nothing to burn, just yellow paint and rust inside my car. I'm happily making a cut inside the car near the rear seat foot well/seat area. It has a rust hole there. As I get close to the rusty area.....a spark from the grinder (and there are lots of them) hits the rusty area and bursts into flames? The flames are bright pink/red. It's a small fire that seems to be burning from one spot. The flames are giving off a bunch of silver/white smoke. About as quick as it started it went out? Needless to say I quit working on that area and moved to a different area....a spark from the grinder shot to the same area and POOF! The same area is on fire over a larger area this time and goes out about as fast as it started? Besides being confused now I'm gettin scared. What the heck is happening:confused: Long story short...it caught fire in a similar manner two more times in the same spot? I looked to see if something was spilled on the floor boards but found nothing except smoke coated metal? Why is my Subie catching on fire? Glenn, 82 The Flaming Hatch! 01 Forester
  10. Thanks for the diagram, I may end up making one of these. If I'm understanding the FPCC correctly, there should be power to the fuel pump when I initially turn on the ignition switch. Then if the motor runs the coil/ignition will continue to feed power to the FPCC and then to the pump. So when I turn the key, and get no short duration power to the pump, then the FPCC is not working properly? I gonna get ugly with it tonight. Glenn,
  11. I pulled the doors off my Hatch (along with the hood and rear hatch). Great way to see the country. Drove it for several months that way until I transferred the drive conponants to the Summer. Driving without doors is cool! I never noticed any structural problems Glenn, 82 Summer, 01 Forester,
  12. I read the links you sent..... Do I need the FPCU? or can I just run a wire to the pump. It sounds like folks are running power from a "key on" lead and going with that? Tell me more about the pink connectors..... I know what ones your talking about. Glenn,
  13. Duct tape a camara to your hood! We need this kind of video for inspiration! Sounds like fun wish I was there........... Glenn, 82 Summer, 01 Forester,
  14. I swapped the entire wiring harness into the buggy. Though it would make things simpler that way. I used my volt meter and ran a test current into the fuel pump power line starting in the glove box area, then I checked for power back at the fuel pump connector. I found power in the wire (blue) and I also found partial power in the ground wire? A grounding problem makes some sence. Is it possible to get feed back into the ground through the FPCU? or is it more likely there is some other prob that is giving me some power from the power wire to the ground wire? Would this fry the FPCU?, Fuel Pump?. I tryed jumping 12v to the pump and the pump did nothing:banghead: Wondering if I'm dealing with two problems caused by a ground? ????????? Glenn, Daysed and confused!
  15. I'm not getting power to my fuel pump:-\ (EA81 Hatch) How can I test the rev sensor/fuel pump regulator. This is the black box under the dash that I thought was the relay that the dealer calls a rev sensor ($150). If I jump 12v to the fuel pump to see if it's working is it going to hurt anything? Blue===Power? Black==Ground? I'm not getting gas to the front filter/carb. Thanks, Glenn 82 Summer, not getting fuel. 01 Forester, uses way too much fuel.
  16. I'm busy tampering with my suspension in the yard and my car (EA81 Hatch) just died:eek: Added a bit of fuel and put the car on level ground. Nothing! Got some starting fluid. Ran for a second. Pulled the line off my front filter and turned on the key. No gas! Pulled off my power leads to the pump and checked for power. Nothing! Ran up the wiring harness to the wires (I had labeled Fuel Pump??Not 100% sure I had the right wires??). Power! Questions, Are the fuel pump wires White w red stripes and black w yellow leading to the fuel pump? Am I missing something or is the problem likely in the wiring? How do I test the fuel pump relay? Do they still sell relays and fuel pumps at the dealer? Have I missed anything? SUGGESTIONS? Thanks, Glenn 82 Hatch, in a previous life! 01 Forester, still a Forester!
  17. Wagon's ability Good! Hill Holder Evil! I hate those things!
  18. I tow, http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo21/cap_111203_102535_16_1 Forester towing my SubaruHummer (frame). I tow a riding mower, hobie cat and a snowmobile on a regular basis and the Forester does not even notice. Glenn, 82 Summer 01 Forester
  19. Throw in an EA81 while your throwing out weight figures. I put out a thread a while back and I have never been able to get an answer on weight figures:confused: Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  20. I just got my WWP-99 coolant recall notice. I did a search and apparently it has been out a while... Has anyone had their Subaru in to the dealer yet or have any more details than what was in the recall letter. Wanting to know if there is anything I should be aware of before I take it in for the recall. Thanks, Glenn 82 Summer, up and running 01 Forester, always running!
  21. Thanks for the pics, I was holding off till I knew how to remove the thing. I'll pull it off tonight and see what I can see? I just got a stereo installed last week so that will take the urgency off fixing the subaru clock. Now I just have to figure out how to set the stereo clock:confused: Thanks, Glenn 82 Summer, still has orignal dash clock 01 Forester, still timeless.
  22. Utah Update Went through the San Rafael Swell last weekend. The Forester was at home in the desert terrain. As it was threatening to rain, My boy and I ended up sleeping in the Forester? I was thinking it was going to be painful getting elbowed all night folded up on a tiny car. It turns out that the Forester folds out nice and flat! My little boy didn't kick me all night like I was thinking. I was surprised at just how much room there really was! What a great campmobile! At least half of the vehicles I saw were Subaru wagons of some sort! Must be a Subaru Mecca down in the San Rafael Swell? Glenn, 82 Summer, up and raging! 01 Forester, campmobile!
  23. My wife was the one who sent the $ to Australia for the plans! I think she did it so she wouldn't have to drive it anymore:confused: She has been very supportive. If I'm out in the garage she has time to read! Wife, Family, Hobbies, life is a balancing act. Glenn, 82 Summer, up and running. 01 Forester, running.
  24. I'm wondering why a guy couldn't make some? It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult? The ones I saw had flattened spots for steps by the doors for steps and that sand paper stuff for traction on the steps. Now I'm thinkin:confused: Humm...............
