What is the secret to getting the inner tie rod boot on the rack lip?
nipper replied to porcupine73's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI just used a spray lubricant. Also helps if the boot is warm (room temp). nipper

Electrical problems abs light, no hvac, won't go into drive
nipper replied to ericem's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI would suggest pulling one fire wall plug at a time then putting them back on. Usually that is enough to clean the contacts on the plugs. This failure may never show up again, but I think its just a poor or dirty terminal on one of the plugs. nipper

over heating problems
nipper replied to sayinsorry1988's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou must use a OE thermostat in a subaru, and no other. replace the cap too since the car is old enough for it to be tired. There is a method to filling up the cooling system, otherwise it can cause over heating by trapping air. Remove the cap and open the radiator vent screw. Start the car (even if the system has been drained). SLOWLY fillup the cooling system. The slower the better. Use a pre-mix. Wait for the thermostat to open. There will be a surge of fluid at the radiator neck. Let the fluid settle down and start filling again. Close the vent, cap the raditor, and have someone drive the car around the block, and have them watch the engine temp. Let the car cool down and check the fluid level. If more fluid is needed add it with the car running and the engine hot. Make sure the overflow is properly filled. Most shops don't take the time to do this porperly. If this doesnt work there may be a HG issue. Good Luck. nipper

Power but no start - 98 Legacy AT
nipper replied to rottenhead's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou have two issues. One is the solenoid contacts in the starter. The second may be a bad engine Temp sensor. I would however start with a good old fashioned tuneup. nipper

Air Compressors... How to keep them quiet?
There isnt alot that you can do besides wearing ear protection. Air compressors are noisey by nature, especially in the potable range. nipper

code 1507 idle control
nipper replied to scrapdaddytatum's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes it is an old thread, but.... Two days from home, oytside CHicago, Blu has decided to scare the hell out of me (I am with Mom). Started him up, went across the street to eat, shut down (crossing a 6 lane road is not safe on foot in pitch dark btw). Ate dinner started him up,drove back across the street and he threw a code, (this code) started running really rough, threw a code, and stalled. Before he stalled i gave him gas and he seemed fine. Blu never stalls. He started right back up, i cleared the code, he was running better, but not perfect. Shut him down and he restarted. When i left the resteraunt I thought his idle was way too high, but he does get goofy on extreemly short runs. On this drive the EGR code has been thrwon several times, and his gas milage was wone on the corn-fuel (in NY we have methanol and he does fine on that). I am outside chicago on 90 and stil have to drive to NY. I dont have tools, and I am thinking this is just going to be annoying as opposed to a real issue. And Blu is 97 2.5L auto. Thoughts? nipper

Lock your shop! Hide your tools! Yell at strangers!
Depending upon the location of a shed or garage or house, i think automatic lights can be useless. They get like car alarams after a while. They alos give anyone trying to steal anything alot more light to work with if they are working out of sight of the street. I had the same thing happen last spring, so i feel for you.

The easiets and best upgrade for any breaks is to get ceramic pads. you can get thermostats for transmission coolers. nipper

99 Impreza OBS 4th gear slipping problem
nipper replied to 99ImprezaOSport's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXClutch test Put front bumper agains an immovable object (building). Set Parking Brake Put car in 5th gear Let clutch out Do everything you can with the gas pedal to keep the engine from stalling. If the engine stalls clutch is fine. If you can keep the engine running the clutch is on its way out. But the play in the linkage tells me you may just have a worn busing in the shift linkage. Dont let this go to long as it can affect the synchro's if the gear is only partially engaged. nipper

99 Impreza OBS 4th gear slipping problem
nipper replied to 99ImprezaOSport's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXExternal linkage WILL affect things if it is not fully moving the clutch fork to properly engage the gear. Inspect the shift linkage for play and adjustment. How many miles are on this car? Have you done the clutch test yet? nipper

Justy Motor to Loyale D/R Transmission
The guy in the UK may not be using what was a Justy in the US in all likelyhood. There are much better engines around to use for something like this, the Justy has some lubrication issues, the oil pump is weak and really may not be up to this kind of abuse. nipper

1992 SVX Questions
nipper replied to torxxx's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXActually you also need an external filter and to replace it regularly. The torque converter clutch sheds material and clogs up the barely large enough passageways for the fluid. Why do you want to do a break swap, this car has great brakes. Rear wheel bearings are weak. Parts are expensive. No real engine issues. Windshield is uber pricey. http://www.subarusvx.com/links.html nipper
