So I've had this real annoying vibration in the brake pedal and steering wheel as I come to a stop from about 45. If I brake from 70 i dont feel much until i get down to 45 and then the front of the car shakes violently until probably 15mph, where i can still feel alittle pulsating in the brake pedal. This has been an ongoing problem for a while, and of course I always thought of warped rotors. Last weekend I put brand new rotors and pads on, and still... same thing. Almost no change at all. There are no problems at all when accelerating, or cruising. The car is smooth with no vibration at all... until i need to slow down or come to a stop. Kinda stumped here. -Brian p.s. Its a 1993 Legacy Turbo Wagon

Yeah 4 pick and pulls, and a couple other private yards too. EA81's are getting harder and harder to find.

This is the car he's selling: Its a standard hatchback. Looks like its gutted and should be pretty light. Dunno how safe it is with a full set of temp spare's as rims.

Thanks for the heads up Do you remember seeing many Legacy's??

Growling noise, right front, EA car...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to BRAAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Everything described here is common symptoms for a failing wheel bearing. Ive done more than I care to admit. And nipper is right, if they fail on you, you WILL need a tow truck, and the job WILL be 100x harder. Im as stumped as you are BRAAP. The problems you are describing are sure to be a wheel bearing, but it appears you've already replaced them. -

This is a simple fix.... ....Just get a louder stereo -
It is entirely possible to have an intelligent conversation regarding these two type's of off-roading. Lets just try and keep sarcasm and our sense of humor out of it so we do not confuse eachother and turn this into a food fight. I cannot say I have ever been the burdon on a wheeling trip. But then again, I do not wheel with large packs like the Hatch Patrol does. Even with my 'Yota it is just me and my co-worker. I tend to stray away from the large packs of off-road groups, because there will always be one guy who is not prepared and will rely on someone from the group. The local Toyota club here has guidelines if you want to join them on their trip. They have a pack list with required tools, spare parts, and equipment that is necessary to rescue your rig. Nowhere in there does it say they will not lend a helping hand, all it boils down to is you be responsible for your rig and your party. The same should go for any sportsman willing to venture into the wilderness in their car/truck. This has turned from a pros/cons for Subaru v.s. Toyota into a debate against those wanting to wheel, and those willing to sacrifice half a day to help unprepared wheelers. Im sure thats not what Zap intended.

Audio File, quit trying to pick fights. If you have something meaningful to add to this topic, please do share. I have wheeled with Eric, and the only thing I have to correct him on... is him being the best spotter. Ken did a magnificent job spotting me... eric did a great job creating a line for everyone else to follow. He has reason to be upset if a half broken automatic bone stock subaru tagged along with him. I would be just as upset if it were me. Rule #1 about off-roading: Know the limits of your machine, and be prepared to fix your *************** if it breaks.

Hrm.... Not sure what I should say in here. I wheeled Sube's. Albeit not near as hardcore as Eric. I did take my lifted wagon to the Rubicon, but didn't dare go through it. I too know what a Subaru is capable of, and the thought of destroying it out in the middle of nowhere is what kept me off the "big stuff". And before I go any further, I want to stress how different the off-road world is here in CA versus WA or even Oregon: vs. After building my hatchback, and taking it out to a few places, i realized just how limited I was here. Sure the hatch looked and performed great! However, most the trails I took it to only began as "Subaru-able" trails, and a few miles in I found spots that were unpassable with 27" tires and open front diff. So, I sold off the Hatch as parts, and picked up a cheap $1000 toyota. The toyota was $250 less than that of the hatchback in stock form. The toyota also came with swampers, locked rear end, and 4" of lift. $300 for a hysteer kit. $50 for some used 33's and im only $100 past the initial purchase price of my hatchback except for now, the trails I took my hatch on are nothing more than logging roads leading to the real deal. Do not get me wrong, im not trying to be an elitist. Im just stating the truth as I see it. Subaru's are fun. Driving the toyota over rocks is a no brainer. You just point, gas, and go. Its fun, but its not the same as wheeling a subaru at all. I still miss the hatchback. I get waves from all Toyota drivers here when im in my truck (and believe me, the Toyota cult is here is much like the Subaru cult up north). And I get fingers and bad looks from Jeepers. But definatly nowhere near as many looks, thumbs up, or smiles the Hatch got! The end result is, we get to go out and play. We go where we want, and how we get there is irrelevant. But its making it home at the end of the day that really counts!

The WCSS pic confused me alittle, thought it was affiliated. I still accepted the friend even though Im too far to ever wheel with you guys. -
You got a laptop setup for the VRG scan tool? I'd suggest running that and just use it to help see what the ECU is reporting. I would also suggest new wires. I did new plugs one day, and after a test drive it had absolutly 0 power under boost. I found out one of the wires had pretty much deteriorated. A new set made the car feel like new again. If there is any doubt in your mind, spend the extra $50 or so on some new wires.

Bikes to WCSS10??
TheSubaruJunkie replied to BlueSoob's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I got a bike im sellin Mike. If you are interested you can PM me and I can bring it to the show. Its a full suspension Specialized mountain bike. Not alot of good on the road, but tons of fun on the dirt. Still kickin around the idea of bringing my new bike up there. I know there was alot of interest in my other thread. -
Well im almost positive its the fuel pump. I put the car into d-test mode, and unplugged the fuel pump. I verified its getting 12v. If i plug it in, it doesnt do anything. I tapped on it and it came to life for a split second... but only did that twice, then went silent. Guess tomorrow I buy a new pump.

Ive been paying for insurance for 11 years. This is the first time I've had to pay money to have my car towed. Somehow, i doubt 11 years of AAA premium membership would cost less than $270 (what it cost to get me and my car home at 2am) so in the long run, im still ahead of the game. -

I had a thread setup and a ride setup. Its lost in a hundred pages by now. I was thinking of taking my bike, but have started to think twice. Im not sure if I want to sacrafice the MPG by having the bike on the top of the car for 1400 miles. Im also not too comfortable brining my new bike to the show... its worth twice as much as my car is. And... now after some recent events this last weekend, im not even sure if I will be attending at all. Yeah about that noise Pete, i would recommend using new pads and not the same ones from the junkyard. Also might want to take each rear wheel off and look for any rub marks on the backing plate where the rotor may be making contact. And also make sure the brake line is not making contact with the wheel in anyway. Right now I am feeling less than confident driving the Legacy to the show and back. Im kinda upset with it, if im going to drive it anywhere, it will be into a lake. -
McDave, there is no distributor on a legacy... but if it were a EA82 that would be the first thing I would have checked. I did check my timing belt, and there is tension, so thats okay. It does have spark, i got the car to fire up on brake cleaner that i had with me. I didnt have my multimeter with me, but I will bring it home with me tonight and check for power leading to the pump. Also use it to check fuses. I did a visual inspection of all fuses last night, but didn't see any that were obviously blown.

My car died last night. Left me stranded 75miles from home. I pull the fuel line leading to the filter, crank the motor, nothing comes out.... What tells the pump to start pumping?? Is it the ECU? Does it use the crank angle or cam sensor? I pulled codes and im getting 11, 23, 49... there is one other, it was 2am on the side of the road so the codes could be wrong. I'll check again tonight for the codes... i know there were four. Not sure where to check first.

Yeah, i called Progressive. Even though I dont' have roadside assistance on my policy, they were still able to locate a tow truck and have me towed from the shell station to my door at about 1/3 of what Sierra Towing wanted. -

2:11am and im finally home. Thanks for buying my tires Greenley, it just paid for my tow ride home Not sure wtf happend, car died and wouldnt restart. Verified no fuel is making it to the filter. Will do some research and try to repair it, however I dont know if I can feel confident driving this thing across Oregon and back, so my WCSS plans maybe canceled. -
