could thermosensor cause engine to run hotter?
calebz replied to nutt7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Corky, don't be an rump roast. Its fabulous that you understand the function of the ECUs Coolant temp sensor. Thats no reason to be condescending to those that don't. The Thermosensor for the ECU(I assume you are getting a code 21) Will help the computer determine how much fuel the motor needs. That will change how it the motor runs if the sensor is not functioning correctly. It could make the car run lean, which in my experience with subarus can cause the car to run a little warmer than usual. Chances are that if you are running significantly hotter than you should be, theres another culprit. I have gotten a code for the Coolant temp sensor a few times. I Have been able to remedy it every time by cleaning the contacts on the sensor and the plug.. They get kinda gross after a while. -
EA82T Tuning Problem - Idle
calebz replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On a stock Turbo motor(non spider) theres the Aux Air valve that kicks up the RPM for cold idle.. and the fast idle thingy for when the AC is on.. (which is basically a controller vaccum leak I believe).. I don't know how that stuff may or may not apply to your modded motor, but just trying to throw some stuff out there to think about. -

Thats an odd one. I may know where to get you another computer if you need one though -
Have you not figured out that he doesn't want a 5 speed?

The 4EAT will bolt up, but they only came in 4WD. In addition, being an EAT, there is a bunch more wiring and a Transmission control Unit (computer) that must be added. Not worth the trouble IMO.

compression check on 88 subaru
calebz replied to blizzak's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Of course theres a possibility that the mechanic messed up the test. You don't say which 2 cylinders are low, nor do youo say what the compression of the other 2 is, so I will make some guesses. 1) cylinders with low compression are on the same bank. 2) Very possible you have a small HG leak. Note: Never take your car to a Subaru hater. They are generally full of irrational fear and, being that old soobs are some of the easiest cars there are to work on, if he can't adequately function on an old soob, I would question his ability to work on anything else.. Thats just my point of view though. I worked on many, many other types of cars befor I ever laid hands on an Suabru. -
yours is a 2wd? You need to find a 2WD Turbo car (EA82) I had a set a while back and no one wated them so they got tossed..sorry

Crank pulley. If its an auto, jam a big screwdriver in the flex plate and your good to go. If its a manual, you have a few options. 1- Brace rachet and long breaker bar against fender and bump the key(not recommended by me) 2- Get the tool from subaru $$ 3- Drill a hole in the top of the bellhousing and drop a screwdriver or something through it into the hole in the flywheel. (note, I don't suggest using a punch.. they break.. I have a crappy old phillips screwdriver that is the perfect size that I keep around just for this.) #3 is my preferred way of doing it. Thank you to moosens for the idea.

Electric cooling fan died a few days ago. I bypassed the thermoswitch and it worked. So I decided it was a bad switch. Since its so friggin hot here I decided to just let it go like that and have it running all the time. That lasted for three days. Now theres no power getting to the wiring that goes to the switch. No blown fuses. Stuck relay? If so, which relay is the one for the fan. Any other ideas? Is there maybe another fuse that I am unaware of? Yes, I know I can wire the fan directly. I would like to get it back to working as closely to the way its supposed to as possible. Thanks.

There are S/R and D/R FT4wd 5 speeds available, so thats an option

I tend to believe your mechanic is talking out of his backside. I have spoken to two different subaru techs today from 2 different dealerships (called them about something else) and neither of them had any idea what I was talking about. One pulling my leg.. maybe, but 2? not likely since the second one is a friend of mine.

4spd or 5spd? d/r or not?
calebz replied to TheMeatWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have never heard that the 4spd is smoother or more reliable. I kow of very few people that have broken an old soob MT, whether it be 4 or 5 spd. Nor have I ever heard that the 4 speed is better for rally. Theres got to be some reason subaru used a 5 speed in their rally cars.. You are planning on rallyX? I would use a FT4WD D/R 5 speed.. straight out of an RX.. which happens to be subarus old school rally car -
Wow.. that sounds like a pain.. Mine were real easy.. got a spring compresser from autozone, removed struts, compressed spring. tapped on the perch a couple times with a hammer, realigned the notches to the top position, reassembled.. took about an hour to do both. Note.. it didn't become easy until I posted on the board asking how the hell do you get the darned things apart

EA82 Wagon Rust - Fenders And Behind Rear Wheels
calebz replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Easiest thing to do. Come visit me in texas for a week. We will go to the yard and buy a nice rust fee car with a bad motor/trans for $150 and do a quick swap and send you home with the nicest old school soob in your state -
One minor addition. K&N makes a drop in filter for soobs that doesn't require any modifications.. cut the airbox and drop one of those in and your good to go.
