  1. I agree , the grills won't offer 100% smash protection,, they might not even offer 20% smash protection. But they will help with the occasional flying gravel hit and some light bush wacking protection. manly they just look a little better than a giant piece of angle iron welded to your rear bumper;) However the best sugestions I have seen here is , "Cautious driving techniques" and "Taking the lenses out before taking on the rough stuff"
  2. Don't have to be going backwards to bust a 85- 87 subee wagon tail-light. I've seen people rub a tree on the rear quarter panel and crack the lens. Of course WHERE you 4wheel is a big factor, like down south here there always tight bush and tree areas that take a tol on your paint not to mention the soggy ground causes trees to slant often. its possible to even bust a tail-light without the tree ever hitting the bumper. And ofcourse if you're 4 wheeling with a bunch of drunk red-necks ,,,even the unemaginable becomes possible:drunk: And of course ,, theres the , ocasional reason to kick it out
  3. Yep thats true, at the moment I asked the question it was late and raining outside, plus i was just being lazy and woundered, just how much info does a VIN number contain:rolleyes:
  4. Take one of those little metal grill light protectors they make for Chevy or Ford trucks or mitsobusis or Jeep cherokees or forester and mod it to fit on your wagon I wish i was set up to weld ,, I could make all sorts of stuff!
  5. Are you talking about the 4 speed automatic or the infumus 3 speed? because finding a good 3 speed is getting hard. and the 4 speed needs a controler box.
  6. LOL yeh!, then you can get some 6" bushwacker bronco cutouts, and cut the finders clear into the doors!
  7. BAD IDEA! it will be like steering with a chain! thay can distort and cause freeplay in the steering linkage ,, not to mention breaking. If one shaft were held in place or stablized the it might be OK.
  8. Troxx,,, replyed to your PM but I forgot to tell you. My GL wagon is a Automatic 3spd tranny,,, so the tranny mounts on mine are futher back tward the first U-Jount. that being said,, the pitch on my motor would be different then that on a manual tranny due to the way I had to lower it inorder to get the drive shafts to line up.. Soo what all this means is...... My steering linkage may be as much as an inch differance in length than what you need. however, if it helps. the length that would work best, in my case, was 14-5/8ths
  9. I ran into this same problem,, Do you have manual rack&pinon or power steering? They sent me one that was 9" long,,, (power steering) what I needed was one 14.5 inches long (manual steering). I ended up taking my original to a welding shop to be lingthened. There should only be 2 U joints in the whole linkage, 3 is a NO NO Buy the way how did it go with the lower radiator hose???? and electric cooling fan .thats where i tore my arms up at. Oh and if you need to lingthen your pitch stoper, here's what I did. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=44324&highlight=pitch+stopper
  10. Odly enough,, with all the other issues:rolleyes:,,,I had no problems lining up the "tranny" brackets. Although, I made sure original bolts were completly out befor i lifted the front. Did you try, after attaching the strut block and engine cradle block, putting the wheel back on and lowering the car back down to the ground. Then ease one new bolt in just a little , then play with the pitch of the connecting rod using a pipewrench or a prybar
  11. I just Bought a suposetivly "thin" electric fan from advance Auto 14" dia, and 3.8 deep. however it wont fit because my AC compressor is 2.5" away from the radiator at the narrowist point.
  12. Looks like my comments have already been removed;) As far as the tires are concerned im not going over 26.5 in diamater Plus im not going to be "gunning" it or doing any hill climbing. everythings flat here:lol: It's finally done, (with the exception of the electric fan) I made 1.5 inch tranny blocks witch gives the driveshaft the proper alighment, adjusted the linkage, modified the pitch stopper, everything works , drives good now. The worst part about the whole experiance was putting on the lower radiator hose. After lowering the struts and shocks it turns out to be about a 2.5 inch lift in total but it looks good.
  13. I used to be a parts manager for a company that sold and serviced Copiers. and those copier boxes always came with massive bags of silica. So if you have a Copier service and sales center in your town, ( like, Coeco, Danka, Konica, Minolta, pitny bowes, Canon, ect.) just go behind the building and look where they throw out the cardboard boxes and in the trash dumpsters, you will find the silica beads. OR Just go by and ask the Parts manager,
  14. :rolleyes:YEP Totaly My Fault. I'M a heal . sorry about that, i was thinking that I incuded my vehicle information along with my payment ,, however, Looking over the payment details , I failed to specify eather Manual steering or Automatic transmission. On my 86 GL with 3AT, the transmission crossmember is further back ( closer to the first U joint) and not at the same location as the manual tranny. the plate to be lifted in my case only suports the connecting rod or tension rod not sure what you call it. To qoute Gilda Radners' chariter " Emily Litella " when made aware she was completely wrong......... "Nevermind"
  15. The three original bolts that come out of the assembly are all the same length , infact all six of the original bolts are the same length. Thers is no rubber gromet anywhere on that plate or on the body. Spent an entire day trying to track down the right bolts no parts store or hardware store localy carries them. Finally ended up having to use spacers As for the linkage , I called, and Albie said they were back-orderd for a week, I would have to ship my old one and my new one back there to be modifyed. Might wan't to double check your kits for 86 GL's with 3 speed automatics and manual steering.
  16. For those of you that ar doing a lift of 4" or more on a EA82 and don't have a welder handy. Here's a nifty trick to mod your Pitch stoper rod. (maybe weld it later) Parts: 1 - 3/8 16thread die or threader 2 - 3/8 couplers (extension) bolts and 1-1" 3/8 threaded connecting rod or ( 1 coupler bolt if you can find one 3 inches or longer) Grinder or Saw table vice or (6x6 block of wood with a hole in it) Add LockTite thread locker and locker bolts, adjust to proper length. Tighten it and then bolt it up WARE GLOVES AND SAFTY GLASSES
  17. If it wasn't my only car and if i didnt have to pay $30 extra to have my steering lengthened, i might relax,, bumming rides to work is not cutting it.
  18. I"M UPSET!!!!! First they send the wrong steering linkage and I had to get mine lengthened at a local machine shop! Now when i'm finaly putting up that side I discover, while i had no problem lining them up, two of the three boltes needed to finish the "tranny mount" are the wrong length!! So now, another day goes by without a car and I have to spend more money on something that should have been included.
