Electrical problem with 90 Loyale
Skip replied to dptyrob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Glad you got it fixed, these cars do seem to eat alts for lunch and dinner. I went through so many one year I decided to dive in. If you are of the ilk, I would secure another known to be good unit or do as I did and dive in. -
Your ignition amplifier is suspect in these situations. It is mounted below the coil on the coil mounting bracket. If you remove the rad overflow bottle you can see it. Would you care to test it before spending money on wires?

this common problem should be covered under normal routine maintenance the IAC or Idle Air Control valve wants cleaning Details can be found at Cleaning the IAC I found this by using the search function under cleaning the idle air control valve

Jef Any universal single wire 02 sensor will work in your car The factory unit was made by Bosch Napa has a universal single wire Bosch for less than 20 USD

The absolute best way ever to clean your fuel system?
Skip replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you would be well advised to do a Google search on the dangers of using meth. too much is not a good thing and you can easily do more harm than good please suit yourself but concentrations as high as you say are not recco'd some fuel system components and meth do mix literally -
How can you tell a Carter-Weber from a Hitachi?
Skip replied to thedoctor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
C-W is a single barrel carb Hitachi is a two barrl. carb Chevron is a good cleaner as is Seafoam -
this does not apply to your distributor. You have no advance mechanism as your car uses a crank angle dist. and all timing after the static timing is handled by the ECU can't answer your donation question but thank you you should see a change in your header

codes on a 87 xt 4cyl turbo

Grunt, remember your ECU is under the rear parcel shelf. Beside the pass. side speaker. Hope this helps. -
uh-oh part 1 update, and uh-oh part 2!
Skip replied to Geocritter's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sorry Mudis is talking about some other vehicle. The type that can have their ECU "reset" by disconnecting the battery. This vintage Subaru does NOT do that and further more If your car is 4wd (no mention) it will not even have an ECU to reset. In this vintage Subaru that has an ECU, disconnecting the power source WILL reset the "learn mode" but not erase or reset the ECU error memory . Geo, Your problem needs some homework on your part. In a "no start" situation. Take the aircleaner cover off and move the throttle (reach over the air cleaner housing and pull the cable) Does the accelerator pump squirt fuel? If not your car may have a primary fuel filter under the car infront of the fuel pump. You say "new fuel filter" If there is crud in the tank a "new filter" can get old real quick.. If you have fuel then the spark issue must be checked. Hope this helps and welcome aboard the good ship USMB -
93 Loyale SPFI Grief !!!!!!!!!!!
Skip replied to subpennyman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That code clearing proceedure is for a Gen I Legacy not Loyale The USRM has the code clear method you need. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=44 or here http://www.troublecodes.net/Subaru/ Both methods do say to start the car with the two pair connected though. Yours should be white and green not black and green I believe. By the drivers side hood hinge under the hood. Note codes will not clear if the problem still exists. -
Ah Glen, the EJ 22 is a bit different than what you are used to I believe. The T-stat is under a goose neck that is on the block on the end of the lower (not upper) radiator hose. I'm afraid most of the system will need drained. Catch it and filter it through a clean cloth when putting it back in. Follow the burping proceedure of having the front higher than the rear, using the upper rad hose as a fill point, there is an excellent post by Setright on this method.

Chris have you been keeping the petrol tank more than half full? H20 in the fuel filter could cause your sudden power loss. Coolant leak, many ideas come to mine so you might want to have a cooling system pressure check done.

Way kewl Doc, has some lines of GT 40 I am sure you know Al can be MIG welded. Faster than TIG but may not be as strong. I can only think of a very few guys who could pull this off You are on that short list. Good luck may the power of the Pleiades be with you

UTrace, the fuel pump on your SPFI equipped car is controlled by the ECU. It gets the positive side of the battery power from the fuel pump relay any time the ignition is in the on or start position. The negative side of the circuit is provided by the ECU (some may incorrectly call this the "ground") The pump only runs when in the crank to start mode or when the engine is running. The fuel filter can cause symptoms of fuel starvation also.

Turbo trouble, and question about pulling trouble codes
Skip replied to tizzle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check to make sure you didn't bump the high low range lever into neutral. There is some disagreement on the color of the connectors that need plugged together to read the codes. But if you have not seen the CEL (Check Engine Light) on. NO codes will be stored. Here is the article in our repair manual (see USRM top of the page) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=44 The green connectors are the "Test Mode" connectors I believe you want the black ones "Read Memory" connectors You do not get the codes from the engine check light in your model. They are output on the 02 monitor. The 02 monitor (LED) is on the back end of the ECU. Which is mounted under the steering column. (ECU end facing you after lowering the trim panel). Hope this helps. You may want to peak under the distributor cap to see if any moisture got in there. Hope this helps some. -
A coolant reservoir is much different than the overflow catch bottle we have. The main difference is that the reservoir is pressurized with the coolant system and is mounted higher than the radiator. My Jag XJ 6 had one as do some Bimmers and Mercs. Some old gen turbo Subaru owners have adapted them to their car primarily to increase the capacity of the system. Remember we blow head gaskets quite frequently also in our 1.8 L engines (both OHC and OHV models) The link to swirl pots for sale says "Bailey Swirl Pots Designed to be used in conjunction with a Bailey alloy header tank, a Bailey swirl pot fits into the top radiator hose and removes air bubbles and hence hot spots caused by cavitation." And interestingly enough are offered only for turbo cars. The missing entity is the capture tank that the small hose barb goes to. It would be similar to a coolant resevior.

IMHO The sensor that sounds like it is giving you problems is not, repeat not the 02 sensor. The FI Coolant Sensor connections are in the same area as the 02 sensor connections. The tip here is the fans running. When the ECU sees a problem with the FI CS it turns the fans on in case the engine is over heating. Mine did the same thing - jiggle => off with the fans & CEL for a week - then CEL and fans on returned. For 30 bucks I replaced the FI CS - the silliness has ceased now for a 1000+ miles. Haynes should stick to making underwear. I am sorry, and I apologize, your first post is a bit convoluted for my old brain - you are driving the 95 correct? The 94 has OBD I and the 95 has OBD II is why I ask. Hope this helps. If you need a picture of where the FI CS is. I will get you one if you email me.
