Every state seems to determine which vehicles will be called truck for registration purpose its own way. In NY Suv's, Foresters and Outbacks are called Suburban. Its own class. .......The law defines a suburban as a vehicle that can be used to carry passengers and cargo. Vehicles that can be registered with the suburban body type include station wagons, sport utility vehicles, hearses and ambulances. The body type code for a suburban that appears on registration documents and records is SUBN. O.

Minivans,SUV,Cargo vans and pickups with a GVW of 6000 lbs or less are called class 1 trucks, even though they have seats behind the driver. The Outback is not called an SUV therefore is not called a truck. They obviously share engines and trannys and the MPG is not that different. For those of you old enough to remember the BRAT. They installed two seats in the bed, so it would not be classified as a truck. O.

What mark are you using on the crank gear? Prayerfully the mark that is embossed on the oil pump that has the sensor attached. The crank key way should then be at 6 o'clock. If you get to this point the pistons are halfway down and will offer no interference with the valves. At this point the passenger side will spin freely, but the driver side will load up as you approach the timing mark. It will sit unless bumped. You can use clothes pins or clamps to hold the belt in place. The lower idler goes on last, requiring some upward pressure as you catch the threads. If the cam pulleys are hitting a stop, STOP. Do not force. You can rotate the crank a little at a time, then the cam pulleys , alternating until they are basically free wheeling. Then you can align as stated. O.

In NY an 02 can only have one monitor not ready and have no check engine light. As suggested, replace the air temp sensor. Clean the Idle valve ( search). Check for any exhaust leaks. Change your plugs if not done recently. After the repairs, clear and see what codes return. You may have to replace the front o2 sensor. Advise O.

Charging Help

Resolved Made a rookie mistake. Took the alt off of another 96 I had and somehow mixed them up and brought the old one back. After deciding it had to be something I did, rechecked output and it was about 12 volts!!!! Finally got back to where the correct one was and swapped. At least I can feel my fingers again!!! FYI Advance Auto's testing does say past/fail, but it also gives an output amperage. O. . -
Charging Help

I've checked the grounds and cleaned up a few. The battery was charged a few days before the real cold snap here. Checking now, the voltage is less than 12. So I am getting a new battery and will advise after I get it to the vehicle in question. The alt was taken to Advance Auto and tested. Thanks to all for their help. O. -
Well I guess I didn't remember correctly lol . If you can/are willing to put a small hole in the ceiling, find a place where the beams cross and put a length of chain around it and secure with a nut and bolt. Of course the car has to be able to be centered under it. From 2004 until now, along with a comealong ,is how I've pulled at least a dozen engines. O.

Whenever I am ready to install an engine, I put a small piece of 2x4 on the tall side(actually 3 1/2) under both sides of the tranny housing flush with the edge. This allows me to catch the dowel pins at the same time clearing the engine mount studs so I can push the engine forward and catch a bolt. After I catch all the bolts, I knock the pieces out and lower the block right into the cradle. O
