Cam seal replacement on EA82
GLCraig replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Take off the cam sprocket and you should see to bolts that hold the seal retainer. Take those out and the retainer should come out, you may need to twist some. Don't forget to replace the o-ring on the back of the retainer. -
will an ea82 disty work on ea71 motor?
GLCraig replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It looks like your neighbor has an Gen2 Body style hatchback, the description of the upper hose is dead on for Gen1 and Gen2. Here's a link to the 87 sale brochures, there are pictures of both justys and hatchback. http://usmb.net/gallery/album80 -

you need to cut off one of the mounting ears and modify the oval on the other. You also need to swap the drive gear. -

It would take some modification to make a EA82 distributor fit in a EA71, some electrical mods maybe need too. Now tell us how you got a EA71 into a justy, or do you really have a hatchback, or do you really have a justy and are mistaking the 3 cylinder engine for a EA71? -
Take the cap off of the distributer, crank the engine over to see if the rotor turns, if it dosen't you most likely have a broken timing belt and your getting that code because the signal from the crank angle sensor is not changing

'85 RX motor with no knock sensor?
GLCraig replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It will screw in the whole but there are some other differences between the knock sensor. All I can remember is that the one used with the hot wire MAF is different then the one use with the vane style MAF. -
Like the guy who was caught doing 140+ in is civic, on 205 the other night? He's too stupid to strike fear into.

The Idle is controled by the ECU. The ECU will very the idle speed based on engine temp and load. When the engine is warm 800 rpm is about right and when the engine is cold 1500 is about right. Also if the AC or Defroster is on, the engine will idle faster to compensate for the added load of the AC compressor.

There's been a couple of guys who have used EJ engines for rock crawlers. Someone on the old board posted pictures of his. He made an adapter plate to bolt up a 2? speed powerglide to it. All of the US market EJ engines have Sequential MPFI.

EA81 headlight conversions, dual->single round
GLCraig replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Back in the day, a customer at the shop I worked at wanted to go from dual to quad; we ended up having our body guy swap core supports. -
It's a pretty easy to replace a wheel stud, if you have the tools needed to take the brake drumb off. After that it's a matter of driving out the bad stud and pressing in a replacement.

82 brat clutch issues (updated 5/28)
GLCraig replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've seen what it takes to brake an input shaft and well, if you did brake it, the bellhousing would be in 2 or 3 pieces. Moving the shaft forward is basically impossible without taking the transmission apart or braking the shaft. When you were trying different clutch, flywheel and throw out bearing combinations, did you ever try it where you didn't install a throw out bearing and holder? -
It's could be done. Someone posted a year or two ago about how he mounted a Powerglide to a EJ22 when he built a rock crawler. Comming up with an adapter for an automatic maybe a better way to go since there would be fewer thing to match up and make work.

Question about 87 4 door turbo

Go sell some blood. -
Yes they came with a skidplate from the factory. Mine was even put to use at WCSS6, it's bent, my core support was bent too but my oil pan didn't get touched.

Before you start cutting, you should weld in some bracing around the area you plan to cut, this will help keep the sournding area from moving around on ya.

Distributor,Tach and noise
GLCraig replied to lefty2053's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The bushing in your distributor is probably going bad. Take off the rotor off and wiggle the end of the shaft. Up and down play is okay but front to back and left to right isn't. -
I just put GR2s on all 4 corners of my 84GL and they did help put a smile on my face at the most recent rallycross. With that said, they may not be what you want for offroad since the front struts do not come with the height adjustment. I have not used Gabriels so I can't say anything about them. A few years back I had an 80 4wd hatch that I put some Monroe struts on that had the height adjustment. They seamed to work just fine.

Well this was by far the most fun I've had at a rallycross, the suspension work I did made my GL handle a lot better. My times weren't anything to write home about but they did go down everytime. I just need to learn not to bumb the 4wd shifter, I found myself in neutral a couple of times. -
Fun At The Subaru dealership!
GLCraig replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hearing stories like these makes me glad the dealer I go to has parts guys who have been there since the late 70s. One of them still drives an 82GL. The bummer is that their new ownership dosen't let them stock parts for the old school models. The good news it the regional parts warehouse is only 1/2 hour away, so I can expect next day pickup for most things. There have been a couple of times when they have need to order the parts from Japan for me.
