Video of the old Legacy, jumping in the mud, and circle track
I went to college down there at OIT and there are way too many dirt roads to have fun on. Stop wasting time out by the jail and go exploring. Here's one of my favorite loops. You may need to wait until June to do the whole loop since portions of it are above 6500ft. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=OR-97&daddr=NFD+9714+Rd+to:NFD+5810+Rd+to:Unknown+road+to:NFD+22+Rd+to:National+Forest+Develop+Rd+5850%2FSaddle+Mountain+Pit+Rd+to:Sprague+River+Rd+to:42.418451,-121.797867&hl=en&geocode=FfjBhgIdk0K9-A%3BFQS4hgId11W9-A%3BFSIkhwIdVYO9-A%3BFRxIhwIdKr-9-A%3BFZYkiAIdiXW_-A%3BFVBKiQIdJknA-A%3BFWbRiQIdctO8-A%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=2&mrsp=7&sz=15&via=1,2,3,4&sll=42.426276,-121.788082&sspn=0.021636,0.055618&ie=UTF8&ll=42.485264,-121.8013&spn=0.345847,0.889893&z=11

convert 5spd d/r 3.9 to 3.7 ??
So let me get this straight, you want to take a d/r 5-speed with a 3.9 final drive, convert to a 3.7 final drive and keep the 1.59 low range? Well if that's what you are after, it can probably be done using parts from a d/r 5-speed and a s/r 5-speed with 3.7 final drive. The key piece in all of this is the output shaft of the transmission. At 1 end of the output shaft is the pinion gear at the other end is a set of splines for the transfer case drive gear and in the middle are the driven gears, 1st/2nd syncro..etc. You are going to need to disassemble the output shaft from both transmissions and compare these two shafts. You are going to need to use the driven gears and syncro from the 3.9 transmission. It's very unlikely that the 1st through 5th gear ratios will be the same between the transmissions and the syncro is likely to be match to the shift fork. Obviously you will need to swap the ring gear and correctly set the backlash with the right combination of shims. (note the RX and xt6 transmissions are setup differently) Another option is to find a d/r 4wd transmission that already has a 3.7 final drive and swap the low range gear set from a 3.9. This transmission was found in some 85 turbo sedans and in the 86 RX sedan. Or do basically the same thing with a 87+ RX transmission.

EA81t front sway bar diameter
Try taking the open ends of a few different metric combination wrenches, i.e. 17mm 19mm 22mm and seeing which one has the tightest fit; around the swaybar. That will probably get you close enough.

gas smell at startup
GLCraig replied to eventoday's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXactually it can be that bad. Last winter I had crack in my header and I could easly smell the richer fuel mixture at start-up. The smell would go away after the engined warmed up some.

gas smell at startup
GLCraig replied to eventoday's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou may have an exhaust leak. On cold mornings the ECU will increase the amount of fuel that gets injected into the engine, until the engine reaches a certain temperature. What you are probably smelling is the unburnt gas that's coming out of the exhaust.

headers on stock 2.2 , YES or NO ?
GLCraig replied to oldschool's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI have a 94 Legacy that's had a single port 2.2 put into it. In the beginning It had a stock header and cats from a 96 impreza and the rest of the system was the stock legacy system. I couple of years ago I replaced the stock header with a borla header and yes I did notice a difference through the power band, mostly above 4Krpm. A year later I added a custom 2" catback and a highflow muffler. This made a much bigger difference in the power output and the decibel output. A few days after WCSS10 I did a couple of baseline pulls on Pacific Import Auto's dyno. At the wheels my legacy is putting out 118 Ft-Lbs at 4300rpm and 113hp at 5800rpm. The only other engine mod I have is a K&N panel filter. So now back to you question. Yes a header will help but in my opinion you should start with good catback first and go from there.

Impreza struts on ea82?
The way that the struts mount to the steering knuckle is completely different between an Impreza and an EA82. You would need to find several pieces from an XT6 and to do this swap cleanly; you would want to do the full 5-lug conversion.

Just bought a 96 Outback!
It just needs: a body lift, some swampers and a fresh coat of wax

wats your mpg old soobs?
Okay I just did a road trip from Portland to Kfalls and back in my 84 wagon. I held 70mph on I-5 except when the driver in front of me was going slower. Over highway 58 i held it between 50mph and 60mph because of the speed traps through there and face it, an EA81 doesn't pull the hills in 4th at above 3000 feet. Then I kept it at 65mph going down highway 97 except when I got stuck behind a truck. I got 28.5mph on the trip down. I drove basically the same way on the trip back and got 29.5mpg. I wish had cruse control, to see what kind of mileage I would get. When I commute in this Subaru; i get around 25mpg

I might be up for a scouting trip, around Astoria. Nothing too hardcore since I do not have a lift and I have had my 84GL too long to beat-up the body.
