backspacing isnt some canadian term; its different than offset. offset is how far in/out the mounting surface is from the center line; mesured in negative and positve... not 'inset'. backspacing is how far out the backside edge of the rim is from the mounting surface. http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html#backspace

My '88 GL started out as a a 2WD 5speed. Yes; very easy to spin the tires! Still easy even with 29" tires on

MorganM replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I guess someone in Austrailia did it. There was a whole thread about 4.44 in a 5spd d/r. Now the forums are gone though -

Swap the motor into the one you blew up. Part out what's salvagable. Dispose of the carcass accordingly. -
WHEWH! Thanks for the heads up; the lack of offtopic posts in here would have been alarming
-
damn; I was hoping those AA rims had less backspacing

Awsome! Thanks for those pics; I didnt see them on his website. -
One time I pulled this whole engine assembly out of the way at a junkyard so this dude in his new jetta could drive through. Some sort of small block V8. Just hooked on a chain, put it in 4lo, and drug it dow to the end of the isle.

several threads dedicated to this topic. try the search feature; pretty sure there's even a how-to thread or link to one.

Neither could I I searched a long time for an affordable AT tire that still had an aggressive pattern and depth; decided the Liborator ATs were the cheapest AT with a good pattern and deep treads.

Both upgrades are definatly nice to have.

I'd suspect intake manifold gaskets first. -
Great event guys; hope you have a big turn out. This is what proves to anti-access groups that we are more than takers of the land; that we actually care about the land we have the privlage to offroad on. Keep up the good work so that we can keep the trails open!

I wouldnt go any SMALLER than 28"s. 6 lug swap isnt that cheap; consider the 14 or 15 alloy pugs + tires. It's more than just drilling more holes; you have to buy more studs, more lug nuts, and hopefully someone has the right drill bit or you have to buy that also. You'll want some real skid plates and sliders on the sides if you are going to be on the rocks. I've already beat the piss out of mine on the rocks. Stock skid plate is beat up, lots of new dents all around, it just wont hold up if you intend on keeping it a long time. Nice skid up front, sliders along the side, and gas tank at a minimum. Maybe not right away but after you get out on the rocks a few times you'll know where you want them For camping and 4wheel'n I wouldnt have chose a sedan but it will get the job done. I like the room of a wagon for all my camping gear and spare parts. Then again I travel heavy to base camp It's already taking form; I'm sure it will be a neat ORV when you are done. -
Those all suck. I wouldn't go any wussier than Liberator ATs or Yokohama Geolandar ATs.
-
Mine don't rub on any bolts; just on the front inner fender well on the unibody. Sounds like he needs less backspacing at the rims. I thought the AA lift allowed for 29" swampers??? Those are bigger than 235/75 Liberators. Rims are key; what rims are running on your rig Bob? Shady?

Otherside is full assembled now also. New bearings and ball joints in a newer knuckle off a Loyale I parted out last winter. Just need to do a double check of everything, put the tires on, and do some test runs. Always a little scary driving something you've had complelty apart... again :-p Should be up and running fully for the junkyard day this coming SAT.

Where there's water; there's mud. Offroading at night in the mud is just asking for trouble. Done it many times and don't care to do it any more. My Subaru lacks big 'offroad lights' becuase I don't offroad at night for several good reasons. In addition to what you've now experienced I've also found it very easy to get lost at night while offroading. I'd suggest a whole motor swap. Really won't be worth a complete rebuild. Motor swap will get you back running and on the trails the fastest and cheapist, IMHO. Just drive it the 10miles; whats it going to do... blow up? Good luck with the repairs! Just an excuse to upgrade right?
