EJ tranny shaft 1/2 inch too long?
Get a 22mm socket on the crank pulley and wiggle the crank back and forth, make sure that the centerline of the engine is lined up with the centerline of the tranny, if its at too much of an angle it won't be happy. jack up the front of the transmission so that the engine mounts don't interfere with the cross member, thats my suspicion as to why its not going in all the way.

car died in Illinois! HELP!
Before doing any disassembly, he should verify that he has fuel and spark. If he's missing one or the other that will dictate where he goes next.

Optimal Exhaust on 1800 motor
The mufflers will have more to do with quiet then the diameter of your pipes.

Speedometer sticking
I believe on mine it was the actual dash, but I also believe that it is a symptom of oil creeping up the speedo cable and mucking up the internals. It was 5 years ago, so I don't remember that well though. You might be able to take it apart and spray deoxit inside to clean up the connections and contacts.

Potential New Subaru Owner
NoahDL88 replied to AntRue's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThe new stuff is much better than anything from the 80's or 90's regarding oil leaks. My parents have been abusing an 03 Forester for going on 5 years now on the rocks and in the desert of SoCal and its holding up just fine with no leaks.

Optimal Exhaust on 1800 motor
For the header, I wouldn't go any bigger than the 1 and 7/8th. For the rest, i think if you were to double the area you'd be OK, which would mean no bigger than 2.5. And realistically, the intake has been and will always be the weak link in airflow, its like sucking a watermelon through a straw, added to the coolant heating the incoming air charge. Basically, you want to figure out what rpm you want to make max power, do you want torque or HP? From there the fun math begins.... Helpful Article Another Helpful Article

'97 Impreza runs rough, sputters out
NoahDL88 replied to Bmm001's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXCould be a bad batch of gas, I've seen it happen quite a few times when the weather turns cold.

Push button 5-speed
I did the very thing in my DL, it wasn't great for offroading with the 27 inch swampers, but around town and for most things it was adequate. If you went with a slightly smaller snow tire for the short term, it would be a good compromise with the abilities of the transmission. Oh, but swapping in the D/R is straight forward, don't forget the internal trim pieces. and the DL/Loyale shifter is held on with a pin, so you'll want to swap the entire shifter assembly so the other setup works. You can make the two mate together. I did and use the 4WD shift button as an accessory switch.

Optimal Exhaust on 1800 motor
+1, I've done the math on an air bench. 1 7/8th inch diameter off the head. and 28-32 inches before they connect is best. And to nip the back pressure argument in the bud. Its not back pressure that you want, its optimal exhaust flow velocity If the pipe is too small you get back pressure, which is bad. and if its too big the air stagnates and you loose your scavenging effect. If it is the right diameter you get good flow, between 180-220 feet per second, which gives you the best possible power.

I need a car
It looks bad for the 4 wheeling community when you litter It looks bad for the subaru community when you litter When you leave 2 tons of car out on a trail on public land its very easy for the "greenies" to argue why they should shut down our trails, and block access to our best wheeling areas. thanks. Get your crap out of the woods, you wouldn't want me abandoning a pos car on your front yard would you?

EA-82/EA-81 bumpers
I mean, and i guess i should have worded it like this to begin with.... Can i take some super awesome custom bumpers on an EA-82 and put them onto an EA-81 without having to modify them?
-
EA-82/EA-81 bumpers
Are the 4 bolts that hold the bumper in on an EA-82 the same as the ones that hold on the bumper on the EA-81? I may have a few homeless bumpers and would like to consider my options for transplant.

i officially hate winter....
Let me check my stash, its a hatch door, but i think* they interchange, white with tan interior. Don't remember which side, but tomorrow i'll see if its drivers side, if it is you can have it for free!! well, the price of gas to the midway point ( 6 pack of beer would really be more than enough )

5 lug and Rear disc conversion
For the 5 lug at the front, impreza stuff fits if you replace the top mount on the strut. All you need from an XT-6 at that point is the lower control arm, both sides. The advantage of using impreza struts and hubs is that you get a camber adjust that the XT-6 did not have. You have to use impreza Fwd axles, but its worth it (these axles fit the D/R tranny, for the turbo tranny the regular Awd axles should work)

pros cons of soobs or Toys
My money is on Zap, even if he's in a Fwd Oldsmobuick. The biggest determining factor on the capibility of a rig is the thing between the seat and the steering wheel

Help! Daughter Just bought A WRX!
NoahDL88 replied to Gunnails's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI made great money working on fords, those things are cake. The subarus though, are even easier. I'll give this little bit of info. Outside of my local Subaru dealer in Michigan all but 1 person drove a Subaru into work, the one person that didn't drove a toyota pickup. Outside of the Ford dealer that i worked at, 2 people drove Subarus, a handful of hondas and toyotas and only a few fords. heck the service manager had his entire family in Hyundais(sp) We might be a bit biased here about our hate for Fords, but they're not so bad. their new stuff is actually pretty reliable, if you don't mind odd styling.

87 gl10 turbo
QBaby, JMHO but most of us guys here don't speak l33t and teh spelling goes a long way. I dropped the EJ22 (gen 1 legacy 2.2l) into my 88 and i've never regretted it, same if not better econ, real usable power even with the big tires. Much easier than trying to hop up an EA series, and much cheaper too, they even have aftermarket parts for them.

EJ22 Turbo swap ECU?
NoahDL88 replied to kimokalihi's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI just so happen to have most everything to complete the turbo swap sitting in my back yard, the engine would need rebuilt but otherwise harness and whatnot is all there.

Octane and EJ22
NoahDL88 replied to JT95's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIts not good for Cat converters, if thats a 1000 dollar mistake you want to make go for it. Also with those new fangled hardened valve seats, its kind of redundant
