Diff hanger bar reinforcment?
mudrat79 replied to Sweet82's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Bud.... 1" Will work.....Or better yet I take 1" x 1" x 1/8 Angle Iron and With a Cut saw cut it so it semi contours the hanger bar.....Then weld in Place.....May need Vise Clamps to keep it tight in places....??? Any more than 1" may interfere with other things under there....? I haven't Looked at a Foresters Bar Close yet, but Assume its Similar to Old scool..... Also , When is a Good time to catch you home this weeekend to call you....??? I got some cool stuff to Chat with you about..... Talk Soon, John -
Mike , You never told me you got into Snow......You suck...... It is Now Sporting an Ea-81, 4 speed Hi-Lo , 3 Inch lift with Gen 2 Wagon Rear End Gear under It, 25x8.5x 14 tires right now.....there is a Pic of it in My old Pic Gallery from the last Board...... http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo13/Gen1WagonLifted3inches I didn't get to go on that trip With the BEAST.....I had A Little One at home Sick...... Oh well....I'll be there this Next trip.......

Ok For All You Mechanics Out Here....????
mudrat79 replied to mudrat79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok here is the answer you've all been waiting for...... Ok, as I said We did the compression check in the car, and got weird numbers....Good then bad in all four Holes......So I hand turned it several revolutions, and got good comp in each hole, but only for 1-2 revolutions...... We Know heads are in Great Shape, We have almost new lifters in it, We have new Head gaskets in it, We Figure that what is going on is .......... Dead Cold, Lifters have had a chance to slack off a bit of oil.....Once the engine is Fired up, the lifters pump up.....Now lifters can only go so far cause they have a Limiter clip internally.......So Something in combination with the lifters are keeping valves from shutting 100%.....now bear in mind that they were closing almost 100% say like 97% cause we got no backfire or anything ever......But with Lifters up to capacity, not 100% So at this point I turn the Motor over by hand to re-compress the lifters a bit and squeeze oil out of them......this is whan I was able to get good Comp out of each Hole.....This Told up it was definately in the Valve train.....ie. Lifter issue or Cam issue..... Motor has To get pulled at this Point...... We Pulled the Motor and Pulled Passenger Side valve cover off to see if we can Visually see something not right going on....? Low and behold , Barely Noticeable to the eye, Exhaust Valves ONLY are camming up like they should, but are only slack for 2 teeth on the Cam sprocket ( they should stay slack for about 1/4 Revolution of the sprocket or 25-45 teeth ) then it is ever so slightly OPENING the valve back up.......????? Intake valves Looked Good So To verify that this is indeed the problem ( cam not ground quite to proper Specs) we Tore motor down enough to install a Stock Cam in that head..... We stuck T-belt back on, and With motor and a spare tranny on the ground we Turned it over..... WE NOW HAVE 135lbs in # 1 And WE NOW HAVE 145lbs In # 3 ....... AND IT KEEPS IT........ So we Stuffed Stock cams in Both sides , Making sure we didn't put the Wrong cam on the wrong Side HAhahahahaha.... And it has Great Compression all the way around Now.....Motor will get re-installed on Wed....... We would have and Could have figured this Isue out several Weeks ago, But I had other People scheduled in already, So thank you Brad For being Patient With your BABY JOHN DEERE....... I owe ScoobyWagon a Buck, cause He hit it pretty well on the Head first , and Got close On the trouble shoot side of it as well....... -
The Rear of a 2WD is Identical in design to a 4WD ...Minus the Mustach bar, its mounts, A diff, axles, and 4WD hubs.....Oh and Fuel Tank.... Ozified Lift will Bolt right in, you will have a Few rearend Parts left over is all...... If you are just wanting to get the height out of your Car Go for it as is..... Good Luck, John

Ok, For all you Slooths out here in USMB land..... I forgot to mention......When this car is Dead Cold It will fire right up and Purrs Like a Kitten......If you shut it off though it is Done......This Cuts out all timing issues of it being off at the cam sprocket or timing belts...? This Is why We pulled the motor after detirmining it had the very wacky Compression then Lack of compression IN ALL FOUR CYLINDERS.....????? Now for all of you thinking the Cams Could be on the wrong Sides...... What Gives......They Are in no way shape or Form interchangeable......AS someone stated, The Disty is Ran off the driver's side, and it is about 4 inches longer overall...... If it didn't look so Good Painted Green With the Subaru Logo's in Yellow, I would have just tore it up for the useable parts it had on it, But then Brad Would Have cried...... I have been very busy, So I haven't been able to keep up on this Post.....I'll let a few more guesses be had, But what I really want to Know, Is how would you Trouble shoot this Problem....? To detirmine the Actual Issue....???? I'll post the Diagnosis Tonite Late....... Stay Tuned.....John P.s One Person has Hit it pretty much on the head, and Came close to figuring out how to check the issue already.....I'll pm him when this Thread Goes to the Archives....... -

Not the Problem......Valve staying closed would Allow for compression, but no fire.........How would you trouble shoot this Issue though....? Keep trying...... -

mudrat79 replied to mudrat79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nope.....Keep trying..... Big Hint.....!!! Think About why Each Hole might have Good Compression For 1-2 Revolutions, then Have Compression go to nothing.......???? Then After it Sits.....Or is Hand Cranked several Revolutions, it Comes Back for 1-2 revolutions again.....????? -
A stumper Question For all you REAL mechanics out here in USMB land...... I'll give a Buck to the first one to give me the correct diagnosis on this Problem........ This is Pertaining to Brad's ( Subaru Styles ) RX Wagon..... This car Ran poorly on the first Motor which Blew up really good with barely 75 miles on it.....We Installed another Motor, and It still ran As poorly if not worse.... After Many different tests, we Finally came down to a Compression test and here are those Results...... # 1 .) had aprox 50lbs # 3 . ) had 125 lbs # 2 . ) had 30 lbs # 4 .) had 145 lbs This was on initail Turning over.....we Retested and Both 3-4 came back with no compression, and 1-2 had around 125-135......????? thought maybe bad Tester......???? It's new, But we got another from a bud Who Owns a Proffesional grade one, with the same results...... We hand Turned the crank several revolutions, and tested again.....We Got good Compression out of whichever hole we tested for 1-2 revolutions of the cylinder....on retesting, it would be gone......????? We have already determined the problem, and Are fixing it ......I am curious as to where or what you all would do to figure out and Diagnose the problem....???? Feel free to ask Me questions here....... Look Forward to the results..... John

EJ Series engine in a 1st gen Brat?
mudrat79 replied to 1979BratOwner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Anything is Possible, its all about time and Money.......??? I've seen some real crazy stuff happen to Gen one Rides in the Last few Years... at most you'll have to french the Frame horns for the Motor a Bit......EJ Motor might actually just fit....its no Wider than an EA-81 and I stuffed a 2.2 and 1.8 EJ into a Wagon and HAtch of the second Gen vintage.....and I've stuffed many Ea-81 Motors and Trannies into Gen one Brats And Wagons...... E-mail me if you Like, We can chat more about it.......John -
Alright. WHich one of you pissed off Qman?
mudrat79 replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Hey all..... With Luck , THE BEAST will be alive again this week, and I'd Like to take a day run on Sept 18th........ We will meet in SpringField around 7:30 or 8am, and make a day run over the Mountains to Central Oregon......do about 70-110 mile run on gravel roads, both good and Bad .... We tried to do this run earlier in the Summer, but there was still Snow and trees down in places, We did a recon recently and its all clear now, So its time to go play........ For any of you Rouge Area 4x4'ers If you'd Like your Welcome to crash here at my Place friday nite..... Let me know, John

With a 4inch Lift you can stuff 28 inch tires into your wells without any or very little trimming.........You will trim the fronts for turning radius, but it will all be at the front of the fender well......if you use Pug wheels it is very cut and Dry..... Have fun......Good looking Wagon...... John

Yeah, I had my Little RX out there as Tractor cause I'm A tractor kinda Guy.....Used it to pull when needed so we didn't have to fire the Cat up every time...... The Mud Pit was Kick A** all weekend.......Glad it came off So well Loved..... My BEAST WILL BE ALIVE AGAIN VERY SOON......... Later, John
-
Ah...just weld Er up Solid, Thats what any good Tractor Mechanic would Do right GD....????? As McBrat stated, pop the Rear Diff cover and inspect the innards for damage, Depending on What went you could get away with swapping out Spider gears..? Good Luck, John

For all Mudders Going to WCSS-6
mudrat79 replied to mudrat79's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mark, You know what a water bar cut across a road to run rain off is right...? Imagine that Multiplied by 12 all cut at different angles from one another and just tall enough for My stock RX with 3" exhaust to rub......I also put them just close enough together that you have to navigate through them and not around them.... I actually hung up good enough once that I had to work it to remove myself....... If you don't mind it getting clay mud on it, All are welcome to give it a try....... It will be wet down friday afternoon, and saturday morning as well.....And I already drove over it several times in My ride to get it packed in before hand.... See you all there, John -
Hey Everyone.... Well, I missed Ken and Eric on Sunday at the Fairgrounds, Cause I was Putting My RX back together along with Subaru Styles Ride.....I got there Late Sunday afternoon..... I built a Fairly Impressive Little Obsticle Coarse.......Hope you all have tow gear or a Winch..... For those of you who Don't know when to cry uncle and ask for a tow, BRING EXTRA PARTS......... There is also a Mogul Coarse set up for stock Outbacks, Impreza's, and Other Sub's to try mud out on.... See you all there on Friday or saturday, John.......
