  1. i think he is talking about the ball bearings in the cv joint. as for half of them being M.I.A., sounds really bad to me. a junkyard or replacement should do fine, if you pull a JY axle, and its boots are torn, chances are its not in good shape. try to find a decent looking axle. shouldnt cost much more than $30 (after core axle is exchanged). ~Josh~
  2. i have been looking forward to a thread like this for along time. I WANT TO KNOW!!! during winter this mod would REALLY help. ~Josh~
  3. you sir are in luck, there is a write-up in the USRM (repair manual) on this website's homepage, it is very detailed and quite useful. ~Josh~
  4. got a little ahead of ourselves didnt we.....dont worry, i make similar mistakes EVERY time i mod my car. i just get so excited i guess. ~Josh~
  5. that is a good point. didnt think about that, but you should mill it down to get it nice and freshened up for the new clutch disc anyway, just in case it was slightly warped or out of flatness. ~Josh~
  6. well if youre only going to have to strip one car's interior that may not be a bad thing to do. but if you want to route the wiring the "factory" way, your going to have to pull the dash and all that junk, but you were going to do that anyway for the pedal box install. this certainly is no small undertaking you want to accomplish. ~Josh~
  7. since i would imagine that subaru made two harnesses, one for manuals and one for autos. that way they dont have to put all the auto wirng into all the manual cars, makes for better profit margine . hate to say it, but unless you strip all the tcu wiring from the XT6 parts car, and "graft" it onto your manual car's wiring. but like previously stated, some of those wires are bound to go to other parst of the car, like the back, so you would need to strip all the interior of both cars so you car make sure that you didnt miss any of the wires. what is wrong with your auto parts car? if its got a bad motor, why not just swap motors and car it good? ~Josh~
  8. just dont hit it REALLY hard, use a brass hammer or a deadblow hammer. i used a stack of washers with the axlenut and a air impact gun to get my axle back in, worked fine. i suppose you could rent or buy a puller, and use the axlenut with the puller to pull your axle back through the bearings. ~Josh~
  9. so we are talking less than 1/10th of an inch here. so thats like 3/32'', so not a big deal. hell, i think the clutch cable stretches that much when you press the pedal!!!!! as far as the clutch "kit" i ordered, i ordered all the parts that would normally be in a clutch kit, because they didnt have one listed for the XT6. so i just ordered the press. plate, disc, throwout and pilot bearings separately, and made my own "kit" from their website. you dont neccessarily need the stronger XT6 pressure plate, my XT6 pres. plate has never slipped and ive been abusing it for over 6 months now, lots of front wheel burn outs. maybe if youre lucky, they will send you 2 of everything and only charge you for 1, like they did me. oh ya, the price total was 137.00 for the "clutch kit" i ordered. but since WJM has just told all of us that the wrx and impreza clutch discs work on our older trannys, feel free to grab a high quality clutch from clutchnet, or centerforce, or whereever you buy aftermarket clutches. kevlar sounds nice, maybe sintered iron, so many choices...... ~Josh~
  10. ive broken a 1/2'' socket wrench on axle nuts, and bent the crap out of the neck of my dads breaker bar. i should really buy a 3/4'' breaker bar, but that socket and flatbar combo idea sounds like a winner to me. just weld on a 3-4ft piece of 1/4'' by 2'' steel bar and your good to go. ~Josh~
  11. from the sounds of it you twisted your swingarm. when your wheel hit the curb it not only bent the rim, it could have twisted either the swing arm mounting bolt, or the swing arm itself. is anything loose? does your wheel wobble like it has a wornout bearing? ~Josh~
  12. if i wasnt so dead set on having a dual range tranny, i would do this too. nice work. ~Josh~
  13. so the rubber itself is fine, you just broke the metal pieces that attach rubber to motor, and rubber to crossmember? that sounds like a feat if ive ever heard one. id take him up on the motor mounts if i were you. ~Josh~
  14. are both cars using fresh gas and have accurate timing? i know when my EA82 slipped 2 degrees it wouldnt go worth a crap. throw some premium in her and set the timing to 10 degrees, only do that with premium though. but like shawn said, the EA81 has fewer moving parts, and less to go wrong or get weaker over time. and the EA82 cars are like 300-500 lbs. heavier than the EA81 cars if i remember...... ~Josh~
  15. ya, get the bolts and caliper bracket from a JY and replace yours, that could have been a very bad situation, good thing you caught it in time. ~Josh~
  16. one problem is the fact that no-one probably has spare synchros for your trannys, and if they do, they wont be had for cheap. i'd like new synchros in my tranny, get it back to factory-like smoothness. ~Josh~
  17. i got my rack, hardlines and PS pump in and bolted up in 4 1/2 hours. granted my parts car was only 40 ft away, but i had to go to the JY twice because i got the wrong PS pump bracket. oh well. i havent had a chance to try it, still waiting on struts for the 5-lug conversion, and i need a new accessory belt. if you do this, a couple of things you should know: unbolt headers ( trust me) and front sway bar if equipped. to do this you will need to unbolt the jacking plate and skid plate, set aside. the hardlines are bendable, but VERY kinkable, so watch out, dont get rough with them. it bolts up perfectly, like it was meant to. ~Josh~
  18. i would certainly get the bigger brakes, you will be able to actually hit 100 mph now, so your braking should be close to par with your power. and since you are putting since in a EA81, your going to have lots of fun putting the EJ22T in between the frame rails. ~Josh~
  19. ya use cresent wrench with screwdriver through the eye end, and rotate clockwise i believe. ~Josh~
  20. the synchros in manual trannys are little "rings" that are in between the gears to match the next gears speed better than with no synchros. i odnt know if there is a fix for this, i have it also, only when i peel out does it grind, otherwise its just fine. if you caught it early enough you might be able to change your tranny gear oil with some lucas oil additive. use one quart lucas oil add. and the rest use some GL-5 rated 75-90w synthetic gear oil. and give it a tenth of a second or so for the synchros to match easier. ~Josh~
  21. if i were you id be pissed too!!! i went thru the whole HG issue with my EA82 motor, not comon but still. when you said they replaced the radiator...did they give you a new one,......or a used one? if its used it COULD be clogged. when the car goes into the red does it lose power at all? the T-stat also sounds like a culprit, often times it is the T-stat, id try that first. if its not the T-stat, i would lean towards a HG. am i correct in guessing you have the EJ22? im pretty sure you do. if you get the HG job done, make sure they check for flatness of the heads, if they are not flat they will blow HG's again...and again...and again.... ~Josh~
  22. since your 2.5 had DOHC, and the 2.2 isnt DOHC, no, your timing belt covers wont fit, neither will the timing belt. all the accessories will swpa over just fine, i think even the brackets are the same. ~Josh~
  23. ya that guy was F.O.S. i have an EJ25 on the engine stand right now with top holes finger tight. been that way for 3 months now. ~Josh~
  24. how long did it take you to do the wiring...sounded like it took you one day.....if thats the case, you are a wire stripping master! i believe that is the EJ20G from the JDM legacy turbo. stock boost is 10 psi. ....im sure we can expect more boost form you in the future. ~Josh~
  25. i used an early legacy PS pump (1990-1994 i believe) with the EA rack and EA hardlines. all i had to do was bend and twist a tiny bit to get them to line up correctly. also, if you have a charcoal canister, ditch it, it will be in the way. the newer legacy and impreza pumps have a bigger bolt pattern on the PS bracket. if you know how to flare the PS hardlines, i would do it. there is enough flexibility in the hoses that you can twist it just right, but you have to bend the hardlines a little closer to make it fit really good. and make sure it wont rub on anything.
