EA81 & EA82 alt compatability...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Took the Alt from my EA81 wagon and stuffed it in the RX. The battery had enough juice to start it up, and it ran and drove just fine after that. Im wondering if it was even the alt, im thinking it might have been the BAT wire. When i tried to remove that wire from the RX's alt, it was so brittle it just snapped. I put a new end on it, and tightened it to the EA81 alt and all is well. -Brian -
EA81 & EA82 alt compatability...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just want to get the thing home. Then I'll worry about the rest. Im pretty sure was the alternator. The car started to stumble off idle, and after a block or so it would have no power past 4k, then past 3k unless I were to feather the throttle. Then i came to a light where my stereo stopped working and the car started to loose its idle. After the car died, I tried to restart it but the crank turned really slow, so I just used the remaining power for flashers and to turn the windows up. I'll take one of these EA81 alts (from my 84 so internal regulators) and get the car home. -Brian -
Yup, its normal. Just the bushings are worn, but shouldnt cause any real damage. -Brian

Help! Front Brake Pad Install
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Marck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
With your rotor off the car, grab the CV stub sticking through, and just wiggle it. If there is ANY free play at all, chances are the bearings are bad. Also, with the car put back together, jack the tire off the ground and wiggle from side to side, top to bottom. You want to check for any free play that might exist inside the steering knuckle. -Brian -
I say go 4/3 only if you REALLY want that extra 1". To me, 1" wasnt a big deal, so i went with the 3/3 lift. 4/3 will be necessary to run anything larger than 28" tires. Anything less than 28" can be done comfortably in a 3/3. They install just the same. Neither one will take longer. But with a 4/3 lift there are problems with your shifter that need to be weened out. The 3/3 is virtually plug-and-play. -Brian

You cant use the front rotors and Caliper on the rear unless you fabricate a new bracket for the calipers. The rotor is larger in the rear, and the calipers are alot different. In order to convert your hatch, you'll need the rear rotor, caliper & Backing plate from any 4WD Turbo EA82. -Brian

EA82 turbo question

That could be almost anything. Flush your radiator and see if that helps. But you might want to just replace the radiator if you suspect it going bad. -Brian -
Help! Front Brake Pad Install

Check your bearings. If your castle nut was that loose, there was probably more strain on your bearings than usual. -Brian -

EA82 turbo question
TheSubaruJunkie replied to 88xt6joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
At idle, your turbo wont be under much boost at all. Use a pressure guage and maybe a long hose to monitor boost while your driving. (or install a boost gauge if you can). With the car at idle, the wastegate will be open and you wont be producing much boost at all. I believe your most likely to make full boost in 2nd and 3rd gear. I dont think your car will make full boost in 1st gear (although, im probably mistaken). -Brian -
Anyone Delt With These Guys?
TheSubaruJunkie replied to MorganM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, they're located not far from me. Ive visited them a couple times, and the guys there are idiots. Dont know much about subaru's and if you ask me their prices are overpriced. If your lookin for parts, and these guys got it... wouldnt hurt to buy it. They're just a recycler. Just dont ask for part cross-refference or any subaru idea's. -Brian -
EA82 turbo question

You can tell the turbine is spinning? But there's no boost? How do you know its spinning? -Brian -
Even more photoshop fun.
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats my rump roast Its the day I was buying the car, and thats just me checking to make sure everything is there and not beatup. I did angle the headlights downward, i think it compliments the grill (which is something im definatly going to try [on a spare grill]) Not sure if Im going to do the tinted windshield like that. Was just something to fill in some space on the windshield. I really dont like large decals up there or anything, but we do get alot of glare here in california so I'll probably lay a strip of tint up there. -Brian -
I was bored: Before: After: Thought i'd share. -Brian

4WD Usage Ettiquette?
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The rule of thumb is to never use it unless each tire has at least 10% slip. Like wet roads, gravel, ice, snow... anything but dry pavement. Making sharp turns will put more bind on the transmission. Driving in 4WD will use more gas, but probably not anything noticable unless you drive in 4WD for weeks at a time. It shouldnt put any extra wear on your rear diff, its an open diff and should never really bind up. -Brian -
One of my favorites. -Brian

Full Time 4WD gearbox question
TheSubaruJunkie replied to EA82Turbo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh... on a pushbutton 4WD Tranny. Im talking about a Dual Range FWD/4WD lever that would be comming out of the tranny, like the shifter. -Brian -
Thanks... I just learned today about the fuel cut, and im kinda upset over the whole ordeal. From what ive learned the stock RX makes 6.5psi and the ecu will cut it at 9psi (after about 10seconds). I'd like to get around that. -Brian
