2003 Subaru Outback Base Model Front Caliper recommendations
1 Lucky Texan replied to Spiney's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXlove my Lowes corded electric impact - wish I had one 40 years ago if only to buzz lug nuts off. Centric rotors are good value replacement discs. I also run Centric Posiquiet ceramic pads on our OB - most any name brand or NAPA Gold - type ceramic will serve as well as OEM. Go slow and take it easy. try to find a helper to run tools back and forth for you. get a stool or upturned 5 gal bucket to sit on. No need to rush it.

2005 WRX 4EAT Problem shifting from 3rd to 4th under full throttle
1 Lucky Texan replied to 1986Brat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX3 drain and fills are required to get about 85% fresh fluid because of how much is left in the torque converter. Unless you changed your fluid in a manner that got all of it out. some folks have had good results with a bottle of Trans-X for things like delayed engagement - but it won't fix a broken a transmission.

2005 WRX 4EAT Problem shifting from 3rd to 4th under full throttle
1 Lucky Texan replied to 1986Brat's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXGD - that trans model isn't 'special' or 'rare' is it. any flashing lights at start-up? maybe there's a TCU code stored. any dents in the trans pan? still, at that mileage - you might find a used trans as GD said, maybe with a lot less miles. LKQ or www.car-part.com ?

post 04 subarus are Junk...buyers beware
1 Lucky Texan replied to logic23's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyou probably just need an o-ring on that adapter on top of the PS pump. likely it's sucking in air. not uncommon across several models - I had that problem on both my soobs.

Crankshaft Sprocket Unremoveable Due To Broken K
1 Lucky Texan replied to drewpear's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXa tooth count is an additional method to check timing. belt markings will only be accurate before turning the crank - they won't line-up properly again for over a hundred revolutions I think!

ej204 AVCS timing belt replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to pitscars's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthe left side intake cam (I think) will want to jump - but no damage happens if it does. There are devices and tricks to keep stuff aligned if you search. triple check alignment and do a tooth count after rotating the crank thru a few revs. before starting.

To Change, or Not to Change...An axle?
did you ask or position yourself to watch? NEVER do that - they may suspect you are a 'plant' from the State to find 'cheaters'. They must do everything. I know someone who lost his license because a lug nut was missing - behind the hubcap. Another tech I know lost his inspection biz because a vet begged him to let the illegal window tint slide thru. Yeah, he was a vet too. Total set-up. I try to go where I went last and sit with my back to the car.

curious starting issue
1 Lucky Texan replied to Dave643's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI think some folks have had to 'pop' their clutch or brake pedal a coupla times - or replace some kind of button? Except, I don't think you'd get even one click if it was a starter lock-out/security/safety condition.

curious starting issue
1 Lucky Texan replied to Dave643's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXnext time if fails, try 2 things but not at the same time. whack the starter with piece of 2x4. jam it on or knock it - depending on the room you have. Try that several times and try starting. If it starts after whack - bad contacts in the solenoid. wiggle the battery cables. they sometimes can have corrosion wicked down under the insulation - compromising their conductivity. or the bad terminals or bad gnd connection.

Engine Fails to Start After Stop driving in Rain/High Humidity
P0420 is a bane for everyone but, it often is not the cat conv. - look for exhaust leaks, catch-up on any tune-up type stuff. Also check for corroded ground connections or rodent-chewed wiring.

threw a rod?
1 Lucky Texan replied to alpop's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXyeah, 160K miles and 18 year old car? it's gonna need more than just oil changes

Impreza 1.8awd full swap
1 Lucky Texan replied to nunosti's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXif you start it and simultaneously have someone begin spraying starter fluid in the intake - will it continue to run? if so, fueling issue, if not, ignition/electrical or air. I'm no expert and certainly your project is beyond my abilities but, one easy thing that can happen on many cars that fail to start after some repair work is disturbing the idle air hose or issues with the IACV.

AC issue 03 Bean
1 Lucky Texan replied to Lverano's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX^^^^point taken The discharge hose on our 03 H6 has been changed twice. Kinda wonder about vibration since it bends ~90* from the comp. to the condenser. . maybe that 'elbow' of rubber flopping up-down causes early failure? I have looked for a way to brace it - doesn't seem like I could come up with a 'clean'/elegant way to do it.

power steering pump replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to Jman1991's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXmake sure the sound isn't the alt. bearing or something else but - if it's the pump, they don't really have a high failure rate so, getting a low miles unit off a wreck is a good option.

power steering pump replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to Jman1991's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXthat's a weird noise - maybe the relief valve inside? (is the sedan an H6? there's TSB for the relief valve I think) (did you spray the belt with a plant mister? cheap and easy - though it really doesn't sound like a belt. maybe the edge of the belt is shredded and some fiber is whipping around???)

Seized engine...help!
1 Lucky Texan replied to Lockett77's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXinteresting about the pistons, but I suppose it could still be a rod cap or rod bearing issue of some kind pull the oil drain plug and examine the oil for particles????

Seized engine...help!
1 Lucky Texan replied to Lockett77's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXif you pull the plugs and use a 'stick' or something inside the plug holes to monitor the depth, you might find that, as you turn the crank, all but 1 piston is moving. That would be a 'thrown rod' situation.

Seized engine...help!
1 Lucky Texan replied to Lockett77's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXsounds bad - rod cap might prevent turning one way vs the other. you need to pull the timing covers and check cam/crank timing and components first I'd guess.

power steering pump replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to Jman1991's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXhow old is the belt? spray a little water on the belt and see if the noise changes?

power steering pump replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to Jman1991's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXcheck for the bubbles while idling. Some fluid reservoirs make it tricky, get your eye down close - might need a flashlight.

power steering pump replacement
1 Lucky Texan replied to Jman1991's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXlook inside the ps tank for bubbles - could just be air entrainment from a bad o-ring.
