Restoration project question
newsoobdude replied to ShawnW's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Granted I don't count but I have a 85 Brat that I'm resto modding with simple bolt on upgrades (lift, H/P EA81, rear discs, and Pugs), but I figured since Brats are becoming rarer as the years go by, I'd still personalize mine but keep it easy to return to stock if wanted. I was originally going to go EJ powered and put in Bratus1's 5spd D/r kit, but figured since mine won't see much hiway action I'll keep the 4spd for now. Yeah I'm going to cut a set of fenders and doors down, but not the originals. -

I'm in the foothills East of Stockton and would love to do some wheelin' with ya'll. I hear LaGrange is a good place to go wheelin', but generally just head up 88 and go to PiPi or the fire roads behind El Dorado Hills. Any ways, not my wagon though. Bosco, Pismo is a ways for us up hear, maybe something closer to Harris Ranch (Colinga) would work as that's the old half way mark between you and me. -
Ok, I'll put in my brief 2 cents worth that I've learned over the years offroading and from reading in the forums. Granted I still haven't wheeled anything but a stock Subie and other stock 4X4s, but you can always hi center yourself doing light offroading. My Brat is in the process of being recessitated with a 4 inch lift going in due summer time and I'll be using it for fire road and light wheeling/ bike hauling. I'm going 4 inch because I never know what I might want to do and figure 4 inch is better than stock as well as the 2 incher and like to have fun. I've been on some fire roads that a stock Subie and even 2 inch lifted might have clearance problems with and don't want to have issues with that in the future. You say you want to lift it, might as well go all out instead of down the line wishing you'd gone bigger. Some people on the Forum have stated that with their 3 inch lift they still had approach angle issues and what not and wished they'd done the full 4 inch instead. My 86 GL Wagon is stock stock (still) and I'm planning a 3.5 inch lift for it (stock 96 - 99 Outback steering coupler bolts right in and is perfect fit with that size lift) due to ease of the steering coupler and fact that it will be a camping rig like yours. My 84 GL Wagon is going to get a 4 inch or larger lift for serious "fun". All in all, bigger equals less likely to hi center and get stuck.

86 GL 4X4 Rust Wagon (weekend beater/ dirty driver/ bad weather driver) RUST!!!! Underside looks like beginning stages of swiss cheese with dime size holes Carb choke is funky and engine sputters around 4k under load (changed choke spring and fuel filter, still the same and don't care really) 225 - 250 miles a tank:mad: Dent and or rust in every panel but roof Occasional vibration above 55mph Radio MIA Window switches work on individual doors but not master switches Lotsa oil in the rear from EA81 tear down and transport Dome light no workie with doors Drivers headlight condensation Rear defrogger no workie to good (2 bars at most) No horn or Hazzards No Hill Holder Rear bumper twisted Sloppy shifter 4WD light stays on Thats all I can think of at the moment but it's not that bad for a $350 parts car that I can beat the snot out of and not care Did I mention I have a rust free shell of the same car (the one on the right) -
Yeah, I've failed that class more times than not yet everyone at work thinks I gradiated with honors in it Good info to know everybody, unfortunately, I have no input though on the situation, just knowledge gained.

Sounds like a good time to do a Sac area meet and great if ya ask me. -
I guess the dog in the first video is a Subie lover as it was whining about you climbing the car. Gotta love the red Tahoe as well. Wonder what the look on their face was as you drove along the side of the Subie (probably priceless:grin: ). Definitely need an LSD in the front though. All in all WAY TOO F'N COOL :slobber: . If you really plan on playing with it at those fun angles though you might want SPFI to keep from dying at the good parts. :headbang:

Funny you mention that about the power units, I'm looking for 2 complete setups. Maybe we can work something out when the weather is good.
-
What year are you looking for? Power steering or arm strong steering? I have an 83 Rust Wagon I'd let you take it from if you want to pull it yourself, arm strong steering though. Jackson, Ca Amador County.

Where abouts in Cali are you located. I have an '83 Engine thats blown a HG but got good heads. -
Forgot about the D/r. Thanks Gloyale.
-
Good luck! If memory serves me right you have to find a RX or XT6 for that and those are your ONLY choices.

PICS,were did the wheels go?

Nice score!!! Cheaper than mine by $25. Hopefully with my tax return I'll be getting mine lifted and completed, then onto another soob, either my 84 Wagon or the Gen 1 Brats I'm eyeing real hard. Who's lift did you use if I might ask?
-
I need to move to your neck of the woods. The PnP's here in Cali want $200 for a D/r 5spd or any speed actually and that is tranny only:mad: .
-
Lets see the brats.
newsoobdude replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
These aren't mine yet, key word yet. The Green one was rolled and the other has rust issues (haven't been able to climb under yet to determine how bad), both are less engines and the tranny is missing from the Grey one, as well as the tail gate. Notice the DL Brat in the background below, he's got quite a collection of EA81s. If I pick these up (it's a package deal) I'm parting the Green one out and lifting the Grey one and putting in a D/r 4spd from my 83 and well as a built EA81 with SPFI:headbang: . Wish me luck:) -
I second that!!! Funny thing,I was thinking the same thing watching that video. On a side note, anyone have info on the lowered one from the magazine article, I think it might have been Truckin' but it says Sport Compact Cars paint wars.
-
Man! That's a great idea and looks good. Need to get a pic of the whole side of the car also. What size tires are you running?
-
I know of an 84 Automatic up the road from me here in NorCal that's been sitting for a while and will need to be disposed of sometime along with a lot more EA81 Wagons.
-
Just make sure the D/R is from a N/A. One is 23 spline on the stubs while the other is 25, but unfortunately I've had a little to drink and cannot tell ya which is which. D/R is definitely the way to go with larger tires and while your at it doing the tranny swap you might as well do the "twin stick" swap (as I call it) making the Hi/ Low shift separately from the 4wd, so you can use the low while running around town while still in 2wd. Use the search for more info on the twin stick mod if interested.

I agree with you on the Fel-Pro/Sealed Power and OEM but i guess I wasn't clear in the beginning post. I'm looking to get everything I can in one package, not a part here a part there. If they have a package setup please let me know, so I don't have to order everything piece by piece.
-
Cannot believe I haven't posted in this thread yet, I have 5 Subie Wagons, 1 Brat, and 1 old Ford truck. Anyways, here's pics in order received- 83 Wagon (rusty parts car)- 98 Legacy Outback as purchased (DD)- as of recent- 86 GL (bought for parts, but drive instead )- 86 GL (bought for tranny but is rust free)- and lastly Cyberbackpacker's 84 GL (bought for engine and good body)- hopefully wont be adding any more anytime soon. (I do have my eye on a Gen 1 Brat though)

Since no one has really answered as to a complete kit (pistons and rings I'll get from the dealer), how about this http://www.rpmrons.com/Subarukits.html? Anyone use them before?
