  1. It sounds like you have a distributor busing going bad; take the cap and rotor off then try moving the shaft forward, backwards, left and right. There should be a very minimal about of movement. The distributor for an 81 4wd would be the early style Hitachi if I remember right. An 82 2wd would have a Nippondenso distributor. If you had the later style Hitachi in the 4wd, this would be a straight swap but for some reason I think the early style Hitachi is a little different and it would require connecting or disconnecting something else to make it work.
  2. Alright, I finally have a reason to take my first vacation after 3 years at my current job. Anyway I would be willing to meet-up with the Nevada guys down in K-Falls to make the final push up 97.
  3. I seams to me that the pedal bracket would be the same between a brat, wagon, and sedan of that vintage.
  4. Hey Ed, I managed to do okay Last season with my STOCK GL wagon and lack of driving skills, in the open class.
  5. I'll take the XXL Shipping is to 97005 with at business address.
  6. Did you make sure that using this shortblock would not cause a change in the compression ratio?
  7. hmm, Google Maps shows it being a 46hr drive and either coming or going I would have to stop and see my brother in Kansas, which is a 7 hour detour. I have enough vacation time save, and I think I have the funds but no copilot. Maybe next year I'll take the GL across country
  8. I've taken many Subaru transmissions apart but it's been about 8 years since the last time. If I remember right you need to split the transmission case to get the carrier out because the gear at the end of it is a little bigger then the hole in the case. If it doesn't come out after removing the 3 bolts that hold it in, then you need to split the case. If it dose come out, make sure nothing drops down into the case.
  9. d/r 4wd, Yes d/r AWD with locking center diff (RX), No
  10. You might want to consider using an EJ22 instead of an EA engine. I know there would be more work involved because of the EFI but since you want to tow a jet ski too an EA maybe a bit overmatch. Also, in the comming years EJ parts will be easier to find the EA parts.
  11. I'm pretty sure the EA82 uses the same clip, but it's been so long since I tore one down, I can't be sure. It's hard to say if the EJ engines use the same ones because they have larger wristpins.
  12. A buddy of mine had a similar problem with an EA81. When we got the engine torn down, we found a crack in the block between the cylinder sleeve and a water jacket. We also discovered that the sleeve had spun too.
  13. Make sure both surfaces have all of the old gasket removed. Sometimes the Thermostat will slip out of the recess that is sits in and that will prevent the housing from sealing properly.
  14. just look here http://www.usmb.net/gallery/album15
  15. My FSM indicates that an EA81 should have 171psi of Compression Pressure at 350rpm
  16. The place you wan to look is on the top of the transmission near the starter. That's where the Hi/Lo linkage is.
  17. If I remember right, my old shop was buying theirs from Carquest. I don't remember the pice though.
  18. There maybe something interfering with the linkage and keeping it from going into hight range.
  19. I took my GL in tonight, for the biannual emmisions test. It passed on the 1st try, for the 4th time in a row. Results are below.
  20. If you are willing to use a VW transaxle, Kennedy Engineering builts an adapter plate to bold an EA82 to a VW transaxle. They also have an adapter plate for the EJ22 as well. http://www.kennedyeng.com/
  21. I use to work at Mountain Tech until I went off to finish college. They do have pretty good collection of parts. Right now they are in the middle of reorganizing their used parts, so you will want to call ahead and see if what you need is on site. If it's not they can have it the next business day. Their prices are not as cheap as the wrecking yards but then again you're not out in the rain pulling the part either. Also they only keep OEM parts on hand.
