35 Mpg

I have no idea on plugs...? The only thing I did different is put 30.5 psi in the tires all the way around. When I got 21 mpg, I had the tires lower as it was a winter trip and I wanted more tire on the road. I noticed the gas along the way was 85 octain rather than 86 in SLC. I'm baffled too... I second the saw! I carry a wood saw and a hack saw blade. Both can come in handy trying to get past an obsticle

Took the Forester on a 900 mile trip last week (Yellowstone). About 3 1/2 hours out while climbing the contental divide the Forester decides to start heating up? I had a 20 min stop at around the 2 hour mark for gas and goodies...but other than that no problems or stopping. What it does...for no apparent reason the heat gauge will climb from the 1st mark (where it usually camps and does not budge) and moves rapidly above the 1st mark and peaks out just below the 2nd mark (just under the Hot Zone). It takes 30 - 60 seconds to get to the 2nd mark and then takes 30 - 60 seconds to drop again...? The car never gets above the second mark. It may continue at no particular frequency or it may behave normally again. It does not seem to hang on the hot side too long (30-60 sec) before moving down again. What I do know, both fans are working. Turning on the heater does not seem to cool it down. I have been unable to associate it with anything I'm doing while driving but, it may happen climbing more than decending. It rarely does it on flat ground. My thoughts are a really messed up thermostat or some sort of bubble circulating around the cooling system.... Help! Having your car act up on vacation can really mess up your attitude. Thanks, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester L--intermittant heating problem...

Just braging... On a trip to Yellowstone N.P. this weekend, I got 35 mpg in the Forester. It's up hill too? The worst leg of the journey was 28 mpg. Prior to this trip my best ever was 28 mpg ...and I once got 21 mpg on a 300 mile trip. Had to tell someone. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon--Mad Max 01 Forester--mileage is getting better...

...and all this time, I thought that's how oil pans were suppose to look!

Some links to try, Plug your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in here and see what it is/has... http://subaru.sonik.us/vindecode.html Is this your car? http://usmb.net/gallery/album79/1986_h Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester

The Competition Rock Crawlers are using this technology. I helped install it on this buggy. http://www.uroc.com/new/teampages.php?series=EXTREMEW Supermodified #10 (Whit)--the link won't take you all the way there. I think your going to see more and more of this type of armor in the future.

Sk'o, Do you have any jack stands? Could you put stands under the front wheels and turn the tires and see what happens? I'm wondering if there would be any noises or if they spin in opposite directions? That may help to point you in the right direction on where to begin? Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester

Got an 84 GL 4sp D/R I was checking out the fluids and found the tranny oil was WAY over filled! It measured about an inch and a half OVER the full mark on the dip stick. Is this going to be a problem? and... Is there a drain plug to get rid of some oil, like the diff has? I know I can pull the drive line and get a 90w shower and I could probably pump it out... But is there an easier way...? Thanks Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester

I measured a Stock 1984 Subie last night. This is what I found on an unmodified wagon. Front CV angles were at 13 degrees. Struts not adjusted up. The rear CV's were at 8 degrees. Unknown adjustment status. I'd guess it's raised. FYI Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester

I got a new toy over the weekend. Thanks Boobaru! The Car, 1984 GL Wagon The good news is it’s a clean one owner. The bad news is “Mad Max” was the previous owner. The ugly...well just look The Bad, the alternator is toast and putting out 18-20 volts, The brakes feel spongy and may need bleeding. Plenty of rust although no more than my old Hatch. Adding 2 quarts of oil took it up to ½ on the dip stick The tranny oil is a 1 ½" past full on the dip stick. The front fuel filter is mounted upside down. The one front CV boot is torn/missing. The CV roll pin is missing on a front axle. The fuel pump area is damp with gas? Won’t pass emissions. The Good, burns rubber with ease! Motor seems good. Has a stealth look to it with the radar absorbing paint job. Body is relatively strait. No oil/fluid leaks. Everything in side seems to work. Has a sun roof although rumor has it that it may leak? Price was Cheap! (Lunch money) The Ugly, the paint pops up here again, most people would consider this ugly–not me! This is exactly how I would have painted it–rattle can black primer! Grill has just enough tilt to it to have some character. Now....what to do with it? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 84 GL Wagon 01 Forester

Runs fine but seems wrong having it upside down.

Having Stock rims widened?
Sweet82 replied to subarunewbie2005's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Why would you want to widen a 13" rim? There is no real wide tire selection in 13" tires. If you really want to a machine shop can do it, Mudrat can do it or you can do it. I think by the time you have a machine shop do it, you could have custom rims made just about as cheap. -
This is the one I was questioning? I probably could have flipped it in the time I have been messing on the board... See below.

Your alternator is toast!!! Trust me on this one How do I know this....

Looking for the Roll Pin size needed for an EA81 CV Joint? Did a search, didn't find anything :-p Thanks, Glenn

Would it matter if the front fuel filter was mounted upside down (EA81) ? I found one that way, wondering if it's worth mounting right side up? Any ideas thoughts. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester XX XXXXXX to be announced....

You've got to mess with the gears other wise you won't go too far off the trail. So far the old ones are the only ones that have any real potential. Given time, I'd think the new ones will develop the modifications that will eventually lead to some real off-roading capacity. My .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester XX XXXXXXX to be announced.

Inspirational! Nice job with the rims.
