Are these the old D/R's or the new D/R's they are working on? Keep us posted on what they're up to.

Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Sweet82 replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
I realize it's way more complicated but... What about a gear to gear transfer? Smaller gears would allow a tiny offset between the motor and tranny. -
Spitfire seems age appropriate for the vehicle.

Available for the Impreza 2.5RS version 1 and 2 tranny and WRX tranny (just specify which year and model you have) for $4,200 Australian Dollars. At current conversion rates 0.7739, cost is only $3,250 + $149.95 S&H to your door from Australia (plus any applicable duties and taxes through US customs). This is $500 less than the nearest competetor! Figure USD are about half what the Australian ones are. Even dividing the prices in half that's kinda pricey....

Sweet82 replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
Nine inches is a substantial raise... A raise like that would raise your center of gravity and change some of the handling we enjoy. Why couldn't you raise it just enough to have the gears & chain clear each other? I'm assuming theres something in the way? -
If first gear could be swapped out for a lower gear that would be great. A granny gear would be handy but then you'd have a huge jump to a way high second gear? With big tires that jump would be a problem. A set of gears say 1 & 2 may be more useful if it could be done... I'd be willing to have a big hole in the side of my tranny to allow lower gears. ...cover the hole with part of a road sign and some duct tape...

They should have done a better job adapting the "body" to the frame. It looks like what it is, a Brat bolted on a tracked platform. You might as well bolt a out house on the thing. If it had the original body, I'd be interested for $2,000 -

Congrats! Your life just changed forever and you may not even know it yet! It's a challenge and a change for the better. Enjoy every minute Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--brough my oldest home from the delivery room. 01 Forester--just brings grocerys home. -
When we were looking for a Subaru, we didn't care what model we found. The differences/spec. are insignificant for my purposes. Looked at many Outbacks, Legacys and Foresters. I think both will get the job done for you. I ended up with a Forester because I was able to pick it up for a grand under low book. My decision was based off getting the best deal. I don't think it really matters, they are so similar. Buy the one you like. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

The problem with dropping the trans but not the engine and adding a gear reduction would be... you'd be dropping All your gears. So if you went with a 2:1 reduction you'd get a 40 to 1 crawl ratio which may get the job done... But, You'd be dropping your top end speed by half too...so 80 to 40 mph? Short of changing the internal gearing, I don't think there is anyway other than a divorced T-case. Dreaming... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
I'll add a pic.... 56K warning!!! http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/images/stalkerdualy.jpg http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/images/stalkerdualy1.jpg For those of you who don't wanna pull it up, It's RhinoBuggy with Dual Wheels. I believe they are probably 15". The Buggy is a RhinoBuggy Stalker. 100% Subie at heart. While I'm at it... I'm not sure Duallies are really a solution to anything. I'd think they would cause more problems than they'd solve. My .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

'FREE' gen 1 brat stuff

Just grab the parts anyway...who knows who will need what down the road. It will make the owner feel better if more of his car is used for others. The parts can always be pitched later if they really are too bad to use. Take as much as you can get. Offer to haul the carcus off when your done and save him the trip. ....and thank the owner for his generosity! my .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -

Hard to go wrong if you can actually pick it up for $100. With the current state or the car, it would only be valuable to an enthusiast -

Do they make any decent 25" tires for your 15" rims? -

A Forester is not going to climb like your D/R GL! It's different car designed for different terrain. There is an equation you must balance Climbing V.S. Clearance? Bigger tires will give clearance but take away your climbing ability? If your really not wanting to spend money, I'd just put the larger tires and put up with some rubbing. Did you ever really get an answer on what tire will fit w/o rubbing on the 15" rim? Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Welcome to the board, I'd agree with Imdew. Burp it and I'd bet your troubles will be over. This happend to me a few weeks ago for no apparent reason. (no reasons I've figured out yet anyway) Keep an eye on your coolant tank and make sure it's always topped off. Good Luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
