  1. They are really cheap, you can use a dash gauge (19.00 ish) and we can learn alot from that.
  2. One qt every 1000 miles is still considered acceptable for an engine. You have to learn to check the oil at every fillup or once a week, otherwise say goodbye to your engine. You may have bad vlave seals, weak rings, worn guides. DO you have a vacume gauge?
  3. wel since you are using that much oil, it is foolish not to check it at every fillup. Do that it will help us figure things out. has the car lost any power?
  4. Oil burning won't fail emissions. Catalytic converter hide all sins till they clog. When you did the timing belt again what else was done? seals? water pump? Oil pump? Is the oil on the end of the spark plug wires. Once again how many miles between oil changes. Change the PCV valve and check to see if the hoses are clogged. After that we have to look deeper. How many miles per qt are you getting.
  5. Wash the bottom of the engine to make sure there are no leaks. Subarus can be sneaky. How many miles. How many miles since the last oil change When was the last time the timing belt was done and what was replaced. Replace the PCV valve. Have a freind drive behind you for 30 minutes and lets see what smoke you have coming out under hard acceleration and coasting.
  6. Any CEL ? Could be you alread have one bad VSS and the other dying. Could be a bad ground in the cluster.
  7. Usually when the slave goes, the master should be replaced. With the free play was the slave cylinder extended?
  8. As opposed to installing it? In comparison thats a breeze
  9. A flywheel has several jobs. One is to keep the engine spinning at idle. Another is to help absorb vibration at speed, and the last one is to attach the rest of the driveline to the car. If the flywheel is to thin, the harmonics (vibrations at X rpm) may be changed. 4 cylinder have specific RPm points where they "bang" or "Roar" . You can hear this when you stomp on a 4cyl's gas pedal. this is why there is all this wierd snorkus tubing, to try to reduce this noise. if you look 6 cylinders or more do not have this. That Roar can also affecxt engine vibrations if anything is fiddled with. I can not say 100% if this is what it is as I have not driven the car, but after everything else I would suspect this.
  10. All engines are internally balanced. Subarus more so as far as wear is concened. Is this a new flywheel or a resurfaced flywheel? Have you tried removing the accesorry drive belt then watching the harmonic balancer? Possibly a bad valve adjustment? Have we done the vacume gauge thing yet?
  11. YAY all I could find is a sears for 75.00 a popor 25.00 a pop. From Justy's Dustys: What most people don't realize is that any size rim will fit under a Justy's stock fender well up to 23x8." The problem is tires, they don't make 'crazy' sized tires and wheel offsets to support these kinds of configurations. Many wheel/tire packages may require trimming if too tall and/or rolling of the fenders if too wide to prevent scrubbing of the fender wells. Most any 12-14" will fit properly, the problem is 12" tires are almost non-existent, and some 13" tires are hard to find. 14" is honestly ideal and tires are easy to find, but rim choices are limited to other OEM swaps, such as a Honda Civic or Ford Escort wheel. (Note: The 91-95 Escort 14" 8spoke alloy is a nice wheel, and what I used on my personal Justy for many many miles)! 15" require readily available low profile tires. 16" require harder to find low profile tires while the correct 17" has just one size available and will scrub. We recommend a 14" or 15" swap... the 16" rides a little bumpy and the 17" is insane and will affect ride quality and braking. Correct tire sizes are listed below along with other available sizes that will work. All sizes listed below will fit under a stock wheel well, but some may scrub a little when turning or going over a rough bump. Some are be a hair too short or too tall and may affect your speedometer reading up to 2mph. This is perfectly drivable, but be warned! Be sure to measure and measure again to make certain the tire you want to use will fit especially if your car has been modified or is lowered! 12" - 145/80R12 is correct size. Stock wheel. 13" - 165/65R13 is correct size. Stock wheel. 14" - 175/65R14 is recommended size. (What I Used). 15" - 195/50R15 is recommended size. 16" - 195/45R16 is only size readily available. 17" - 205/40R17 is only size available, period.   14. Okies. I have seen windshields pop out and wheel wells fold in due to no support. If it is an auto easy linkage. Steering may be an "interesting" modification.
  15. There is more to a swap then just putting an egine in. If you think your bankaccount hurts now, try doing a swap that requires a lot of "engineering" I dont know if the subaru chassis can handle the weight and torque of a v-8. Brakes will have to be upgraded too. The rear diff may not take it, and bolting it up to a subaru tranny i know that wont take it.
  16. With subaru's the first step is to change the fluid. Can you define this chirp beter. Does it do it cold or wamr or all the time. What does the engine RPM do? How is it in the other gears? How is it Neural to Reverse. Does this happen from Park to reverse or D to R. How is the tranny otherwise. What is the fluid condition.
  17. I've always done it 1/4 turn past hand tight and never had a leak. I agree on the over-tightening
  18. Because the cylinders need to be honed or machined to break the edge at the end of the pedal stroke. The edge is what kills the cups, or just the age of the cups and the fluid. You need a master and a slave cylinder.
  19. Subaru flywheels really do not like being resurfaced unless it only needs a really fine cleaning up. May want to replace it.
  20. Frozen calipers. Slide pins are seized, or the pistons or both. I would see if it is just the sliders, then you may not need to replace calpipers
  21. Blown speaker or a bad connection. Both speakers see the same wear so it is not too unusual to see them go poof in pairs especially if it is a 2 person car.
  22. And the Owners manual tells you how to replace bulbs. I go with the short but why did you buy a bulb at a dealer$hip. Bulbs are bulbs are bulbs and any autopart chain store will have a full selection CLean all the contacts, and how well do the rears operate.
  23. Yes it does make a difference. You could possibly warp the head if you dont do it, besides it is not going to take any extra time to loosen it in order a little at a time untill you feel the bolts have no more pressure on them.
