I'm having the exact same issue with my turbowagon. After the car is warm it smells of burning oil and smokes from around the underside of the turbo. Definitely a leaky line or cracked housing. Do what I am going to, get a new turbo.

I was so enamored with my wife's 2002 WRX that I bought myself a 2004. Awesome cars and stoutly built, rolled one on it's side and the worst damage was one door had to be replaced. I'm looking at a Legacy, or a Baja, if they move it to the new Legacy platform, next.

Bummer, single range 4wd isn't what I'm looking for. I'm quite a ways south of you, no way would I try driving it that far if there's an engine gremlin. Thanks anyway.

There's a rumor with supposed proof over at NASIOC that says the WRX line will get a slightly detuned version of the 2.5 turbo engine for 2006. Food for thought.

How does the clutch feel? I had a problem like that with one of mine, turned out the clutch wasn't fully disengaging. Is this the one on Craigslist for $300?

Weird, I just looked and my '81 and '83 wagons don't have them. Neither do my '85 or '88 hatchbacks. There aren't even bungs in the exhaust where one would plug in. Edit: Just looked in my service manuals and I see nothing about an o2 sensor on cars that were carburated.

When researching a new Legacy for myself I read a lot about minor clutch problems with them,(bad smell, slipping, etc) but no actual failures. You might try over at legacygt.com and see what you find. -Chris

Yeah it's too much money for that car. I had one that is in as good or better shape with less mileage given to me last night. He mentions replacing the O2 sensor, but an '82 won't even have one.

There were some excellent drivers in that footage, some of those crashes could have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for that. Still makes my cringe just watching it.

I guess the obvious question on your engine trouble is, what kind of oil are you running in it? And, have you had a different dealer look at it? None of my 6 Subarus have ever let me down mechanically, the oldest is an '83 and the newest is an '04.
