new 1/2 doors for teh 4runner :)
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Non-Soob Off Roading
There are a few vendors out there who offer tube doors. Alot of shops near me, but I am not the tube door type. Ive always liked 1/2 doors. I will be welding a strip of tube near the top of the door to act as an arm rest. -
Picked these babies up off of craigslist. Met a real cool dude who has a '85 4Runner that is setup too. I think tomorrow we're going to hit the local ORV park and I can get some more pix & maybe some video. The doors almost match the body, but Im going to put a fresh coat of paint after I finish the passenger door & install speakers. So until then, I grabbed my Sharpie and had alittle fun

1988 GL rear locking up
TheSubaruJunkie replied to crazyman03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So was the RX from 1987 to 1989. So were GL10 Wagons & Sedans... XT6's, anything with a Full Time 4WD Tranny. However, if you have a lever. Or a button. Or anyway at all to disengage 4WD and turn your car into a FWD car, then you do not have AWD. And you cannot drive on pavement in 4WD. -
1998 Forester to swap 1993 ej22t

Really, i am not affraid to do head gaskets. Is there an update kit or something available to make the '99 EJ25 as bulletproof as the good ole EJ22's? -

TheSubaruJunkie replied to coatofarms01's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Ok im dumb to all this, just stumbled upon something on craigslist, that if its a 5spd may work out real well. then its just a matter of finding a good engine or block or assemble something good. Plan would be to try to keep the wiring as stock as possible. Not opposed to a 2.5 i guess, just want something bulletproof. Possible wheeler, and cant have any trouble in the middle of nowhere -
They sure did know how to advertise back then, didnt they?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTFN8QpmBDQ&feature=player_embedded

Dude jeff, i am glad you held onto this thing!! I remember seeing it with Todds Brat back at some WCSS's and it was always one of my fav's. Good to see it in the shop with progress being made. Snow is very low impact, and brats are easy to keep warm... plus t-tops in the winter cant be beat! you are making me jealous

1988 GL rear locking up
TheSubaruJunkie replied to crazyman03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah its usually not that bad, but I just bought this wagon and the prev. owner had some wierd tires on the rear. Neither matched the front, and didnt match eachother... anyhow, it wont do a ton of damage but it is not good. -

hey you guys, I might be able to come into a '99 Forester on the cheap, with engine problems. What do you think about just finding a cheap 2.2 block that is good, and swappin that over with the '99 2.5 heads? Or can the 2.5 intake work with the 2.2? Wondering if this will help alleviate some wiring issues and make the swap alittle quicker? -

TheSubaruJunkie replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To be safe, you can probably get all the parts you need from napa, just order them for a 1986 Brat. I think you need calipers & rotors to make it work right, backing plate should fit still... And you come out with all brand new stuff. Turn in your old crap as cores, they wont know the diff. -

1988 GL rear locking up
TheSubaruJunkie replied to crazyman03's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You are wrong. It wont work. You cant turn, and if any of your tires do not match, your car will make it maybe 3' before it siezes the transmission. A friend of mine thought it would be a good idea to put my car in 4WD while we were driving (stupid push button) and we didnt even make it through the intersection before my car locked up. Both him & I were forced to lift the rear of my car... in the middle of the street, in order to get the tranny to disengage and unblock the intersection. -

Well. the 4WD works then. Your tires are not the same size, or the air pressure isnt the same. These things are vital if you want to keep your 4WD working. Oh yeah, dont ever drive on pavement. Test the 4WD on dirt next time. And again, read the owners manual. -
Those would be the light bulbs for your dash & buttons.

here is your problem. YOU ARE DRIVING IN 4WD ON PAVEMENT AND YOU NEED TO STOP RIGHT NOW Pick up the owners manual, do yourself a favor and read it. Your transmission is now stuck in 4WD because there is so much binding in the transmission. In order to get it out of 4WD, drive in reverse if you can. If the trans is siezed you will need to lift either the front of the car or the rear of the car and get both tires off the ground to relieve the tension on the trans. None of your cars are AWD. They are 4WD and there is a big difference. #1 being there is no center diff, you are getting 50/50 power distribution front to rear, with absolutly no slip (its locked in the center). -
Flat towing a FT4WD with diff lock
TheSubaruJunkie replied to capn_r's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah forgot the EA82 with the 2pc shafts. Well then, that sounds like your answer. Any normal 4WD subie you could flat tow just fine. But your AWD tranny is different. -

TheSubaruJunkie replied to capn_r's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you remove the driveline than you lose all the fluid in the trans. Remove the rear CV's and put the front wheels on a dolly. Do not flat tow your RX if you ever want to drive it again. Maybe for a mile if you were desperate, but 100 miles is asking for trouble. -
New RX owner...

I know a junkyard near Bordertown NV that is full of Brats, and I think they might just have a RX tranny and a couple pieces of RX kit... -
New RX owner...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to teamrx's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
My RX ran like a top, even after a fresh rebuild. Of course, it was alittle hi-perf rebuild, but it ran clean. Failed 3 times, i ended up selling it as-is, but got a fair amount for it considering the work performed. Anyhow, those are great cars. I was going to buy it and just drop a EJ2.2 in it, then worry about smogging it that way. With my experience in California with the EA series, I think the 2.2 swap & smog ref would be easier to get by. Have you been to the local pick-n-pull off sunrise blvd? That maybe your best bet. There are a few other yards around, you may get lucky and find a RX in one of them but I would not hold my breath. If you want to increase your luck, you can try the PnP in sparks Nevada or Carson City Nevada, they usually get the good stuff.
