  1. A couple basic tools will make things a whole lot easier:
  2. There is 3 link as well, and that doesnt require as much room above the diff. But I agree, I didnt think about the gas tank being in the way.
  3. No tire shop in sacramento (well, any big name shop) will touch a modified rim. When I was mounting 27's on my 14" chevy luv rims, I waiting until after the tires were mounted & Ballanced before I drilled out the 2 extra holes. The guys at Big-O Tire were wondering how I was going to get the 6 lug rims onto my 4 lug subaru (i worked next door, and was chatting with most the guys in their shop). I explained my plans to them, and everybody in the shop called me crazy. Whatever, just mount my tires & ballance them... thats all I need. A few weeks later when the Hatch was finished, everyone at that Big-O thought it was awesome.
  4. Subie or not, articulation is key when you are wheelin. Unless you want to lock up the front & rear. And if you ask me, it is a rock crawler!
  5. Thats a great looking car! I wouldnt worry about mechanical issues, except maybe CV's & bearings. I dont think i have to tell you, but those EJ22 engines are bulletproof...
  6. Is this the new Aquafina 8" lift prototype?? This thing is going to look awesome!! Are you going to link it in the rear, or just go with some springs and call it good? Since you have IFS still, i would look into doing a 4 link rear end, the suspension will cost more, but you're articulation will thank you for it.
  7. Hate to agree, but I agree You can temp fix the belt... but it will eventually squeel. Take the old belt in with you when you buy a new one to make sure you get the right one. Most guys behind the counter will give you the wrong belt.
  8. If your engine is running rich, it will clog the cat. Amazingly enough, if the engine is running rich, you will also experience backfiring. I say, your engine might be running rich??? That or the timing is off.
  9. Looks like a good car to get you from point A to B. You have a EA82.
  10. You cannot use 14" rims without installing a lift kit. You should sell me those rims.
  11. Both EA81 rigs I lifted had rear disc's converted too... but from everything I have heard & read, you do not need to extend them. Maybe just un-tac them from the trailing arms to give you alittle more slack.
  12. There are two types of people; Those who want to follow, and those who want to lead. It seems this forum has the pioneers who want to do stuff that hasnt been done before. Of course, we all could just go out and drop $3,000 on a ready-to-wheel toyota, spend weekend after weekend bouncing off rocks, camping & having a great time. Or, there are some that want to spend days & weeks in their shop building something with their own two hands. Breaking new ground & proving the nay-sayers wrong. I bought a Toyota, These guys want to build a subaru. I agree with Brian, "To each their own." Back to the subject at hand. I think everybody here can agree that a Subaru's weak points are its CV axles & differentials. Beit the shafts or the cups... something is bound to break in that area. If you ask me, i believe the rest of the subaru drivetrain is bulletproof, and if someone could figure a way to replace those weak links, than anything is possible. Unfortunatly nobody has the shop to do the propper R&D, and it looks like the only person here to have spent time with a machinist on the matter is Brian.
  13. I got a ton of projects on my 4Runner I gotta complete, but my buddies setup ran out of argon. Anyhow, wouldnt be worth the drive. But that setup is very sick!!
  14. Yeah, seen it. You can't compare that to ken block, that is just pure stupidity and a handful of luck.
  15. Make custom driveshafts SJR: http://infohost.nmt.edu/~jscarbro/driveshaft.htm I know a handful of people who do this to their trail rigs. Sucks on the street, but you'll never worry about your driveline on the trails (maybe overkill for a subie) but the cheapest option out there. -Brian
  16. Mick, now that you ruined your door, you should remove the windows & cut them. Make 1/2 doors for your Brat to complete things. I Just picked up some 1/2 doors for my 4Runner and it made wheelin so much better. However, I do have the luxury of 97 degree saturdays in September
  17. I searched USMB & Google, cant find an answer. I gotta helicoil my heads and repair some exhaust studs. Does anyone know off the top of their head what the measurements are for the studs? This is a 1983 EA81, it might have the riser... i suppose I could go check. Last option will to be to remove one stud and just take that into Napa with me. Thanks in Advance, -Brian
  18. I bought my CB at wal-mart, $35. ITs even a cobra. They also had a magenetic mount antenna I bought for $15, but it lasted 1 whheelin trip. The Antenna is definatly the most important part of a CB system. So buy a cheap CB from walmart, but buy a nice antenna from NAPA (I have actually had bad luck finding CB equipment at Radio Shack lately). Napa carries a wide variety of CB accessories.
  19. Those are teh best cup holders i have ever seen. There is a bike shop a couple blocks from me, i am definatly getting a pair of those for my new 1/2 doors!
  20. lift both rear tires then start the vehicle and use the button to disengage 4WD. Give it a sec, it should pop loose.
  21. Took it out in celebration of the new doors. Went to the local ORV park and played around for a couple hours. Had a buddy of mine tag along so he could take pix & footage. here are the pix: The rest of the pictures can be seen here: http://gallery.campkarwoski.com/main.php?g2_itemId=4712&g2_navId=x7e4135b9 I also put together a new video, using all the footage I have of my 4Runner... there's footage taken from today in there too. You can check that out here: Had a blast, think I'll do it again next weekend
