Yes, for under $300 I could grab a good used 2.2 and do the T-belt all the seals and have it ready to go. If you know the histor of the 2.5 and it was not overheated then it may be worth doing the HG. Most of the Outback 2.2 swaps I did were on cars I purchased that way. Know way of knowing how long or how bad they were overheated. I didn't want to take a chance on the lower end bearings.

Are the Fans coming on as they should? Have you checked the temp of the heater hoses? When you turn the temp to cold, you say the gauge goes back to "Normal". What happens to the temp of the upper and lower hoses before and after, when you do this. It makes little sense as you are controlling the airbox flaps, not the actual coolant flow. If you have an OBDII reader, you may want to track the coolant temp there as well.

Those seals do NOT apply to your 92 Legacy.

We had rabbits at work getting up on top of engines and chewing through plug wires and engine harnesses. They can do real damage quickly.

Auto to Manual trans swap is 10X the work of swapping 2.5 to 2.2

1++++++ on the 2.2 swap. I've done 15+ of them and have been happy with each one. Under $500 you can find a good used 2.2. New Timing Belt and all the seals. Drop it in and drive it for another 100K+

When I search the Craigslist and put a top value of $3K, I see some listed in the 2500 - 3000 range. Local market will play a huge part!

GD may have an idea. Otherwise, the next time it is hard starting. I'd stop and pull the plugs and see if one is wet with fuel.

Any CEL Codes? Might have a leaking fuel injector. I can be pretty random.

Thanks. Hers still works fine. The dent is small, but caused a crease. She could drive it that way forever, but the value of her 2018 Forester went down for sure. Another reason I like my 2000 OBS.

When you pull the rears and install them you have to jack them slightly to remove the pressure on the bolt as they come out and to get it aligned to start the bottom bolt. In the yard, I'd just take a couple sections of 2x4 that I could lever into place and most yards don't let you take jacks in.
