  1. Took the XT6 up for the day today.....only a couple pics so far....will post as they come (almost everyone is still up there....I'm just too cheap to pay for lodging). weather was pretty nice:
  2. my pm page isn't working now....fuel lines are easy. the carbed car has a high-pressure line, return line, and vent. and so does the EJ.
  3. the '86 was carbed. the EJ22 I dropped in it was N/A. N/A EJ22s and SPFI EA82s have almost the exact same "needs" (psi and cfm). so if it works for your SPFI, it'll work with the EJ22.
  4. ^he's talking about a hybrid. the phase I EJ25 shortblock with his 2.2 heads/intake. that's plug and play.
  5. IIRC, the cylinder hole in the head gaskets is larger than the bore by a bit. so 2.2 HGs will still clear the bore just fine. but don't quote me on it.....I've got some info on hybrid builds somewhere, I'll dig... I wouldn't bother with the EA82 trans. limits your clutch selection quite a bit, and FT4WD/AWD is much nicer in mediocre weather (where FWD just won't do, but 4WD is overkill). upside is, you'll see better good-weather mileage in FWD. the torque of a high-compression 2.5 would make the low range entirely unnecessary. also, since this is a daily driver. I'd think twice about a high-comp hybrid. they're a bit high-maintenence, and will require premium fuel. maybe get another 2.2 and throw some cams/TB spacer/exhaust at it. might get you the extra power you seek without sacrificing reliability and cost.
  6. I got one for a '90 Ford Grand Squire wagon on ebay for about $30 and used it in the '86 wagon that I EJ-swapped last summer. worked great!
  7. wow. simply awesome work. another solution to the rpm signal "issue" was presented to me this week. Tom'sSVX mentioned over on RS25 a digital speedometer signal modifier that can be adjusted to correct a VSS pulse for different tire sizes. he suggested it could be used to correct a tach signal to use a 4-cyl tach after an EG33 swap.... I'm thinking I could easily rig up a 4-cyl EA82 tach (only takes 3 wires...power, ground, and signal), and use it to calibrate the converter. then a 4-cyl TCU could be used pretty easily (that is, if reprogramming the code doesn't work...). I'll definitely be in touch once the weather warms up. then I can get in there and wire in a set of EJ TCU plugs....make a wire to plug in my laptop....and start digging into code. I was looking into FSMs, and a FWD 4EAT legacy has the exact same gear ratios (including a 3.7 axle ratio) as the XT6 AWD 4EAT. it just happens my EJ22 donor was a FWD 4EAT, and I saved the TCU (somewhere). might try to download the gear ratio maps and VSS signal stuff from it and program into an AWD TCU.
  8. I should mention, I probably put almost 30k miles on it before I started noticing negative effects, I put the cocktail in my dad's '94 LGT at about the same time, and it's still running awesome, but he puts a fraction of the miles on his car than I do. I'll look into that Motul. might be another good option.
  9. follow up. ditched the cocktail not long before putting the car away for the winter. was noticing quite a bit of bearing noise from the tranny. enough that I was starting to worry.... so I drained the cocktail, and filled with 4qts of straight Castrol HypoyC 80w90. shifting is a little slower (but better than before the cocktail), but the bearing noise is gone. also have to let it run for a minute in neutral before it'll go in gear in the cold....but I'll deal with that over bearing noise any day of the week. so, I think the cocktail is like running ATF in your MT. great to clean it out for a little while. but not long-term.
  10. ^I haven't had a push-button 4WD car. but my RX trans is extremely hard to move by hand if the car is running (vacuum lines removed). even if the car is in neutral, the input shaft is spinning, and circulating fluid.....that's my theory anyway
  11. first off: do you have any other reason to believe that it isn't working? did start the car, and see if the lever moves with the button or not? What I'm getting at, is if the problem might just be with the indicator light. otherwise, if I'm reading this correctly (correct me if this is wrong). you have vacuum to and from the solenoids (and it switches lines with the switch like it should). and the lever moves freely at the trans by hand, but not from the switch. assuming that the 4WD system works. it could be: vacuum leak between the solenoid and the diaphragm on the trans faulty diaphragm broken cable between the diaphragm and the lever I believe the push-button 4WD trannies use a clutch pack to transfer power to the rear end. BUT, if these were failing, the light would still come on, you just wouldn't have 4WD. also, yes, the PT4WD systems do have torque bind while in 4WD. that's why there's a 2WD setting. You should be able to manually switch it to 4WD, start the car, drive in a tight circle on dry pavement, and feel significant bind (don't make a habit of this, it's hard on the car). ALSO, WELCOME!!! and a huge pat on the back for searching through existing posts to find the solution yourself!!!!
  12. because toyota stopped making solid front axles in the US in '86. which happened to be the same year they widened the rear axles. so choices are, use the narrower rear to match, or wheel spacers. thousands of toyota guys use spacers. the scrub radius change is not a big deal, it's not like this is an AutoX car.
  13. also the Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual (or USRM). lots of information there.
  14. huh...I never got one. although, I'm usually more careful about letting it fill up. lol @ clown picture
  15. :-p just deleted a bunch. I got an email telling me that you tried to pm me though.....I think that's new. Cool!
  16. everything you speak of has been discussed, done, and documented. you're not new here....have a look around. the answers you seek are here.
  17. excuse me. I miss-quoted that. 88 XT says 25 spline shaft. 02 impreza says 24. 04 impreza says 24. 99 legacy says 24. this confuses me, as I was fairly sure that Ej clutch discs would work on an EA. guess I'll have to take an extra EA 4WD disc over to my buddy's place tomorrow and see if it will work on the 04 WRX trans he's got.
  18. only the disc. although that really isn't news. note: I checked an '02 impreza FSM. and the N/A discs are all the same dimensions, EXCEPT they use a 25 spline shaft. Spec has about 6 different available clutch kits for EA82s. I just wish they had max torque listings for them.....
  19. absolutely badass!! I love that rig!
  20. just noticed this post....and pulled out my XT FSM. XT6 = 500kg then compared to a '93-'96 impreza list. and the disc dimensions are 100% identical between a 4WD XT and an AWD EJ (OD x ID x Thickness: 225 x 150 x 3.5. spline OD 25.2, 24 splines.)
  21. glad to hear it!!! have you seen any of the recent pics of your old brat? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87032&page=2 almost got the lift done.
  22. RockAuto.com they've got an awesome parts listing, and are extremely accurate with parts (haven't found any incorrect listings yet...). I'm running a Beck/Arnley clutch that I got from RockAuto in my car. it's new, not remanufactured, comes with bearings, and alignment tool as well. I've put about 20k hard miles on mine with the EJ22, and it's held up quite well.
  23. hehe, just a little bit. truth be told. You've done some positively awesome work! but yea, a little greedy. I definitely think you'd gain a little power and a lot of reliability if you swapped to a standalone. anyway. not much to report on this. the XT6, and upcoming frozen rotors group buy have soaked up much of my funds lately, and the wagon has been accumulating snow. BUT, Skidd over on RS25 has made progress on his, and given me a massive idea. I was always a bit nervous about running the belt around the radiator hose like reddevil does. but couldn't think of a good way to mount an idler low enough to route the belt under the hose. But he's done it: bolts to the power steering bracket: belt routing. that's some very nice wrap on all the pulleys, and no removing a rad hose to swap blower belts! so I think I'm going to keep my blower mounted flat like reddevil (since I don't have to worry about an ABS pump). but route the belt under the hose like Skidd did. next step in the project, however, is to get some legacy power steering lines. my manhandled EA82 ones will be very much in the way.
