  1. If I recall correctly the P0420 code on that age Subaru is generally for the rear O2 sensor seeing above 0.8VDC (?) during car operation. It's just there to monitor cat efficiency. You could try the spark plug anti-fouler trick or this one https://www.amazon.ca/CNT-90-Degree-Angled-Extension/dp/B016P42V4W/ref=pd_cp_263_3?pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&pf_rd_p=95448740-5917-4df8-bb6a-086a0d0bb079&pf_rd_r=J6MZWBK5MHS91Y90C53B&pd_rd_wg=oU758&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&pd_rd_w=kFTGe&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pd_rd_r=f73843f6-d72d-11e8-8593-9beb2ea54215&pd_rd_i=B016P42V4W&psc=1&refRID=J6MZWBK5MHS91Y90C53B If its a running issue it could be the front 02 sensor (use OEM brand). Live data would be helpful to troubleshoot.
  2. I had a similar issue on my 03 Forester, a grinding noise when starting from a dead stop in first or second gear. Didn't make the noise in reverse or after I got above 20-30 mph. The axle that was installed was a cheap auto parts store one. I pulled the axle out and when I tried to pull it out of the transmission the inner joint separated leaving the stub shaft and inner axle housing in the transmission, the axle separated into two pieces. Long story short, I put in a new Cardone Special axle and noise was gone. I didn't have time to search out an OEM one to reboot so I gambled with the Cardone Select on as Cardone had the contract to rebuild Subaru OEM axles.
  3. I do believe this car has an issue with the tire circumference spec?
  4. The FSMs are available here https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?18087-Subaru-Factory-Service-Manuals-
  5. Sometimes they get gummed up with old grease/liquids. Try getting access to it and clean and lube with some white lithium grease. Could also be the brake switch going flaky.
  6. I checked http://www.car-part.com for an 05 Impreza and for the EJ25 it only lists Impreza as compatible. The heads/block may work if you keep the original intake manifold/cam/crank sensors but that's really just a guess. An 05 SAAB is also listed as compatible
  7. Go to https://parts.subaru.com/ and select the appropriate model/engine/transmission for your vehicle (or use the VIN lookup) Click on the All Categories then Suspension and Brakes Scroll down to Front Axle Housing and click that That takes you to the above image If you scroll down and click on the part number it brings up this page 8. Automatic seat belts have to be the most stupidest invention ever. If you are too stupid to not use the seat belt, then suffer the consequences!
  9. If you change the PS pump make sure you change the O-Ring under the Tank (shown in the image below 34488 and 34487) assuming it has the tank on top of the pump. May be easy to get one from a pull and pay (check for evidence of leaking before pulling it). Part Numbers here: https://parts.subaru.com/a/Subaru_1996_Legacy-L-Sedan-22L-AT-4WD/_54100_6027963/OIL-PUMP-OIL-TANK/B11-348-02.html
  10. Sometimes the easiest solution works! I called AAA once because my 03 Forester wouldn't start after stopping at an Interstate rest stop. While waiting I opened the hood and low and behold both negative and positive cables were loose! I had only drive 1,000 miles without issue. Tightened them up and away I went. Cancelled the AAA call for a boost
  11. Not sure if the 2001 one has the 3.0 L engine https://sl-i.net/FORUM/showthread.php?18087-Subaru-Factory-Service-Manuals-(FSM)-Every-Model-USDM-EU
  12. I ended up buying new knuckles for both sides of my Forester (fortunately my son works at a dealer and I get them for cost + 10%) when I did the rears. I did them in my garage and just ended up buying new lateral links, bushings, bolt, hubs and backing plates instead of trying to fight with all of the rusted old stuff. Wasn't the cheapest way to do it but in parts still less than having the dealer do it at retail. I used the Harbor Freight FWD Hub Tool kit to put them in.
  13. This should link you to the Endwrench article http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/--Articles--/--Endwrench--/Files/WhBearRep.pdf
  14. There was an Endwrench article about rear wheel bearings on the Gen 1 Legacys (IIRC) that recommended using a Hub Shark tool (screw press) rather than a hydraulic press but I don't have a copy of it anymore. I suspect that they are using a hydraulic press to put the bearings in and may not be doing it correctly?
  15. Definitely get more quotes. Chain places will probably be similar, a local suby specialist will likely be your best choice. For example Rock Auto has the following parts/prices PowerStop Caliper/Rotor/Pad Kit $185 (minus $43 core charge on the Calipers) Raybestos Coated Rotors $15 each (coated to resist rust) Raybestos Coated Calipers $75 each minus $30 each core charge (you get $60 back when you return both old ones) Coated to reduce rust Akebono Ceramic Pads (OEM supplier) $43 Above does not include taxes or shipping When asking for quotes ask about part brands, where they get parts. Chain auto stores usually don't have coated rotors or Calipers in stock and some places may use the uncoated versions. Personally I won't put any uncoated brake parts on any of my cars now.
  16. A friend of mine used to drive her car to and from work once a week with the radio off so she could hear any noises that could indicate a potential problem
  17. I can't access opposed forces here. But I think it is shown on this diagram If so Part Number is 21144AA100
  18. I believe the Duty C solenoid is not rated for continuous use so it may be possible that at some point with the FWD fuse in the solenoid may burn out and the torque bind may return, but that's just an uneducated supposition.
  19. My thoughts would be that something is causing an excessive current draw on the circuit that is protected by the fusible link.
  20. One fan is controlled by the ECU for engine cooling and the other is activated when air conditioning is selected on.
  21. Sadly if you take your car to a Subaru dealer they will generally install the gasket specified by Subaru. For many this is the 11044AA633 Gasket that IS NOT a Multi Layer Steel gasket
