load roar when slowing down
MorganM replied to djcracker's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Last AT Subaru I road in the tranny was loud... roared right in the middle of the cabin. Was especially loud when he left off and coasted. What I dont like is you say it goes away when you put it in neutral :-\ When you say let off the gas, that's before you hit the brakes right? If it was just your brakes you'd only hear noise when you were hitting the brake pedal. Wheel bearing you would hear which side it was coming from. Does it sound like its coming definatly from one corner or more in the middle? Is this a 4WD? Could be your carrier bearing cuasing noise. Too much slop in the drivetrain and when you let off binding a bit cuasing the carrier bearing to sound funny. Even in 2WD the driveshaft is still spining, just no power to it. Just a few guesses! -
WAY too much fuel in the hole then. Not much tere in the intake manifold that would cuase this. Gotta be the carb man. I'm not a carb guy though so I can't really say what but sounds like she's just pushing fuel by unexpectidly. These little engins really run off little fuel so it doesnt take much to start running rich, foul plugs and cuase bad missfires and/or smoke! Maybe even the wrong jets in that rebuild kit would do it?

Down there is where the Air Conditioner system purges water. Look for about a 5/8" rubber hose round there and see if that's the culprit.

I like flinging mude all over my wagon. Its cool having more dried mud on my Subaru then all the Z71 "offroad", Ranger "offroad", or Jeeps around here for that matter.

What is the deal with Subaru dealer parts dept.?
MorganM replied to subarubrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
And Subaru know's it.... I've had to deal with the local Subaru stealership parts dorks. As soon as I tell them what year and model they instanly go into 'why are you wasting my time' mode. They really do look for any excuse to get you out the door with out 'wasting' any more of their time. One guy sighed loudly and looked at me like he was ill when he had to go look in a book.... SORRY I made him DO HIS JOB -
Black smoke huh.... lots of unburnt fuel or oil I would say. What does the smoke smell like.... raw fuel or burnt oil?

Havent had any issues with my yellow Accel Superstock. I wouldnt pay $90 for it either! Nothing wrong with an OEM replacement

I thought most of the dudes I've met were very welcoming. A few of them seemed 'too cool 4 you' but the overall atmosphere was positive and welcoming. I've showed up at University Ave. now a few times not really knowing anyone. Just be a little extroverted and ask questions about Subarus; easy way to break the ice You wouldn't be the only stock Subaru there. Get that wagon dirty !_!

27"s ? Bah! By the way CHICS DIG BODY DAMAGE!

That's pretty much why I decided if I want to offroad seriously I need a strictly offroad vehicle and a strict daily driver. I needed something reliable (read: warrenty) and can get me to point B quickly. Bought a KIA Rio for every day and now my GL wagon is just my ORV. Guess which one gets my side of the garage ?

Opinions on used part prices
MorganM replied to Tachometer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's just silly for a bumper. I paid that for raw materials to make custom bumpers. Might as well take that $125 and do the same or find a junkyard that is not in the business of ripping people off. -
I can hold 70 MPH on the interstate in 4th gear. EA82 SPFI with 29"s... wish I had a turbo !_!

Distributor Removed - another question HELP
MorganM replied to Bro's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it's running smooth I guess it's not a problem -
Hey! Where are you MN offroaders when I post events and stuff? :-p Glad to see more Minnesota subarus getting DIRTY! Time for lift kits and tires right?
-
What doesnt make sense to me is trying to achieve lots of travel in the rear only.... the front has to go through first Consider what needs to be done up front also if youre going solid rear for more travel !_!

MorganM replied to 4RnrRick's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
junkyard upgrade! saw a GL10 in a junkyard sweet pillow top seats. would be a nice upgrade !_! -
Yeah by air tools I mean the chuck to air up tires So best to have atleast a little staging tank where it can build up pressure if I need some real PSI and an adjustable valve. Sounds pretty spiffy. Have to grab it and start tinkering I spose. I never air down when I go offroading becuase I'm never close to an air pump when I'm done! Would love to have some on board air.

Do it up man! Time for some better tires

Anyone here running onboard air with the XT6 air pump used for the phnuematic suspension? Is the little resivour tank on there enough so I'm not working directly off the pump? Will it put out enough PSI to pump up my tires? Do I just adapt on regular air compressor hose and chucks then just use whatever air tools I want like the compressor in my garage? I know it's a lot smaller but I just need something to air up tires. Thanks!

Looks like a fun place man. Glad you got it out and got dirty! To me it don't matter what you offroad; it's the fact that you offroad that matters! Were you stuck there? Prolly a lot more steep and deep in that hole than it looks on camera from that angle. Pictures rarely do you justice. Did you try flooring it up there next time?

Yes. I had 30"x9.5" Baja Widetrack Radials on my '88 GL wagon. I used them to judge where I had to trim and bash. They were pretty rotten so I had to throw them away Now running 29"x8.5" and wishing I had bought 30"s again! A big factor not mentioned in this thread is gearing. Good by 5th gear I only use mine going down hill. Getting rolling in 2WD is tougher. Just have to give her more gas and GO! Once youre in 4WD lo it's all good though
