my next subie will be in this year range and I have read hundreds of threads and posts and would like USMB members advice on the best year and model and reason why. im leaning towards the 93-94 legacy or a 95-96 with the 2.2 but need to do more research. I really like the 1.8 motor too. I thought it would be interesting to throw this question out here. thanks in advance.

Hey everyone - I have a 2006 Impreza wagon. Last oil change, the mechanic brought me over and pointed out this circular piece. Said it was leaking fuel, but that it might be easy to fix myself. My problem - I have no idea what it's called, where to find it and if it's safe to fix myself. I'm worried about any pressure build-up, etc. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help!

Greetings, Replacing the fuel filter in my '92 Legacy. I also want to replace the rubber fuel lines. What size hose is it? My local parts store said 3/8" but it seems a little to big? I certainly don't want any leaks.

After Diagnosing the Check engine light as the front sensor, I heated up the exhaust and tried carefully to remove the sensor by working the threads back and forward. It still came out with the threads stripped. I read somewhere that all Oxygen sensor threads are Aluminium. Is that correct? The threads in the exhaust box don't seem too bad, so I need to know what the thread is to buy a thread chaser. Tool shops only seem to be selling 18mm X1.5 or 12mm chasers. Measuring an undamaged part of the sensor thread where the washer had been, gave about 17.4mm across the threads. What is the correct size to buy please.

My daughters 05 outback passed emissions about 2 months ago and we sent in the $ for registration and later I get a letter saying the car didn't pass. I am looking at the paper that says I passed and am thinking bad thoughts about the DMV when I notice the VIN on the pass form is not the same as the one on the car. I go back and test it again and sure as hell, it comes up again with the wrong VIN via the test computer. The VIN on the Title, Door and dash are the same, but different from what the computer is spitting out. Turns out, the computer had a problem before we bought it and was replaced with one from a wreck. The VIN from the wreck continues on and does …

So I got a head scratcher here. Need some other brains to think of possibilities here. Backstory : 04 Forester XT. Unknown history, but overall in good shape, 145k miles, ran well except for a large amount of black smoke and lacking full boost. Removed Turbocharger, it had lots of obvious shaft play, bearing and seal failure. Took the turbo to a local, reputable turbo repair shop. All they do is reman turbos, mostly for diesel trucks and semis, but they do smaller gas turbos too. They rebuilt our turbo using a pre-assembled and balanced shaft assembly supposedly from a reputable european company. We installed the turbo on the car. Ran good for about …

2010 Legacy 2.5i, CVT, 97k miles. This happened yesterday on a short drive. I pulled over and let it sit for about 5 minutes. When I turned it back on the VDC and Brake were still doing their thing but the AT Temp light was off. Called the wife to bring me my BlueDriver scanner before I continued to drive it and there were no codes. Started it back up after about 15 or 20 minutes and the lights were all off and have been off since. Any idea what those lights in that configuration are trying to tell me?

I have a 1998 Legacy Outback wagon. The other day, I got in to go to work as usual. When I turned the key, all of the dash indicator lights came on for a second, and then everything went dead. Assuming that my battery had just died, I jumped the car, and it started. Then I let it run for about 10 minutes to charge the battery, but when I shut it off and tried to restart, it just acted like everything was dead. So I replaced the battery with one that I pulled from another vehicle. The car started immediately, so, thinking that my problem was solved, I got out to shut the hood. It was then that I noticed my parking lights were blinking on and off. I checked all of my li…

I've read a lot of forums on flat towing a 90 manual legacy. So please don't say "search the forum" What nobody had said is how they tow. The tow vehicle is a Ford 150 w/351 cu. No problem there. But is a tow bar used? Where do you attach? Its not like the bumper is a tow point. The dealer said the hook points underneath are for strapping the car to a flatbed, and not a tow point. I have a 300 mile trip to take over a mountain pass. So it has to be a robust system. Thoughts? Comments?

I went to the NY Auto Show to see the new 2019 Forester to go on sale starting in the Fall Asked if the new start/stop function can be defeated by the driver and the Rep told me yes. I have been unable to verify that it can be shut off.. Does ANYONE have any information on this new (probably mandated) feature?? I know you can shut it off in some car brands.. Just want to know about Subarus.

Greetings All! I'm looking for some basic information on purchasing and installing an OEM radio for my beloved 2012 Subaru Legacy. Quick set-up - My (even more beloved) son decided to inserted ~$3.00 worth of quarters into the CD player slot of my existing radio. This resulted in the unit shorting out and becoming completely unusable. I took it to the dealership for the diagnosis and they quoted be $800 for a new radio. The original unit was nothing fancy, just a CD player and the ability to do an MP3 plug-in. However, I can find the same radio (used) on Ebay for ~$100. I'm fairly certain I can purchase and install the used version, but I have a few questions…

I recently replaced the head gaskets in 1999 Legacy and the motor ran fine for about a month before my fuel economy suddenly went down to about 13 mpg (I'm not sure if it's related but the decline in fuel efficiency went down after a friend drove the car into a ditch, though he claims the bottom of the car never touched the ground). The engine seems to run pretty smooth, and when idling in the garage there is no gas smell, but after getting out of the car following a long drive I often smell gas fumes. I discovered that the fuel filler pipe is rusted and spills gas when filled, but I'm not clear on how that could have such a drastic effect on fuel efficiency. Is there a v…

1999 Subaru Legacy 30th anniversary edition 5 speed MT ej22 Car starts, runs for a few seconds, then dies, will not idle. With proper TPS adjustments car runs without MAF connected, but dies as soon as it's plugged in. Car ran perfectly healthy until I replaced coolant temp sensor, tried putting old sensor back in, did not help. Tried pumping gas while starting car, caused motor to sputter, buck and die. Whats new: MAF (has been replaced three times over the course of two weeks) TPS PCV valve Hoses that connect to the PCV from the torque box Battery Thermostat Coolant temp sensor What's been tested: Fuel pressure within spec gets spark ge…

Hi! A few years ago my car was running even though it was off. I thought we took out the abs fuse but maybe I was wrong? Where the fuse was it was H/L Relay LH. Right when we took it out my ABS light was on? It has been so many years, we tried to find a replacement but couldn't find it. Am I going insane? Does a 95 have an abs fuse? I just wanna fix the light for my brother. I look online and it says its a head light fuse but all of my headlights work and in great shape, I'm so lost. Update I just found out my brother showed me the fuse box upside down over face time. IM looking for SBF no 7 fuse. Would that cause for abs like turning on? Th…

My mom let me know her '16 Crosstrek was running like crap when she started it one morning and had a repetitive chirping noise from the engine.. I looked at it and could not even get it started. Compression lost on at least one cylinder and the starter was laboring on the up stroke. Had enough oil in it. Told her to call dealer and have it towed.. Pretty sure some of the valve train came apart, read a couple complaints of cam followers dropping out and causing a mess on #4. Either way it's at the dealer, and for sure under warranty although they are not admitting anything yet ( they are looking at it when they open Monday )

I've got a 1994 SVX used primarily by my sons. The compressor belt started squealing and the ac compressor looked to be smoking when we had a chance to stop and pop the hood on a recent trip. From what I've read, either the compressor clutch and/or the compressor itself are toast. Couple of questions: 1. There are no longer any compressors available from Subaru (they were about $570 if available) or the repair shop providers, so this narrows the replacement choices to recycled (junk yard) or re-manufactured compressors. Has anyone installed used ac compressors from recycle yards? How about re-manufactured units? My mechanic doesn't want to go the reman route as h…

I have noticed with these cars that they are very consistent with how many times they crank befroe they fire when cold. If however, for whatever reason you release the key just a bit too soon- just as it's ABOUT to fire and it doesn't start, then it will take a bit of cranking to get it to start on the 2nd try. By "a bit of cranking", I mean like 3-4 seconds or so then it will fire right up. This behavior seems pretty consistent. This human error induced hard start happens to me maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Today I did this, but the car was then very hard to start. I would crank for 5 seconds or so then it would suddenly stop cranking as if some resistance was enco…

I am looking at possibly getting an Impreza around 2008 or so year. It would be an automatic. Don't need stuff like turbo, or alloy wheels. But I do want to know what engine / transmission variants to prefer and or avoid. What year range around 08 are they essentially the same?
