Your clutch adjustment is the problem. Your HH is just one of the symptoms. Adjust your clutch first to where it feels right. Make sure it double nutted on the end where you adjusted it. I had mine done years ago and the next morning it was doing just what yours is doing. The adjusting nut was not doubled (locking it in place). After you get it adjusted properly then remove the HH cable permantly! It can be a real hazard off-roading as it will give you unanticipated results trying to roll backwards. I have one on my Forester? Subaru sells what the call a "brush guard". It's nothing more than a thick piece of plastic to mount fog lights on. I think they have to have it that way so it won't affect the air bags? In 4wd your rear wheels are trying to pass the fronts if you have a D/R and a 3.7 diff You'd probably hear your drivetrain trying to compensate for the difference in speed. Churping rear wheels? You may be able to jack the car up and see if the front and rear wheel move the same speed in 4wd.

The oversized tires are the key to it's ability. Note the angle of approach is all most unlimited. It didn't even struggle over those rocks!
