  1. Howdy folks, long time lurker here, finally piping up with some questions. I’ve recently acquired a Gen 1 Brat with an EA81 motor and tranny swap. Things are running fine and it’s currently on the road, but I’m looking to drive it from Las Vegas back home to Toronto in a couple of months time when my current gig ends. To do so, I’m trying to compile a list of everything I’m gonna need to replace, acquire, fix and torque down. I’m hoping the USMB can help me out on this front as I try to get everything sorted out. First on the list, I’d like to replace the front axles - the boots on both are completely shot. I’ve read here that a lot of folks prefer having their original axles rebuilt rather than buying replacements. For my purposes, I’ll certainly hold on to my originals for future use, but to drive across the country, I’ll be looking to swap in some new ones. Word on the street is that EMPI have decent build quality, do Gen 1’s and Gen 2’s share the same axle assembly? Rockauto seems to suggest they don’t but it’s not totally clear. Do folks at USMB have a preferred vendor for EMPI? Lastly, if I’m replacing the axles I feel like I might as well do the wheel bearings too - is there anything else that falls in the same category of “might as well replace it” while the wheels and axles are off? I’ve got many more questions as I look to drop a weber on it, delete the EGR, tune up the cooling, switch over to Pertronix from points and possibly upgrade the alternator to a GM, but for now, any guidance regarding my axles and associated upgrades would be tremendously appreciated. Lastly, here’s a pic for those of you that are interested.
  2. Parts Needed for 1980 1st Gen BRAT GL I am trying to eliminate a slight shaking at higher speeds and would like to get an alignment done. I found about half of the parts I would like to replace, but I am having trouble finding the inner ball-joint assembly parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! (See the attached photo to match the following numbers) What I REALLY need: 4. Lock nuts 5. Boots 6. Snap rings (boot) 7. Ball-joint assemblys 8. Lock washers What I was able to find and already purchased: 1. Dust seals 2. Snap rings 3. Tie rod ends - Outer ball-joints
  3. Hi, I'm Jeremy and I live in Lake Stevens, Washington. I have a 1983 Turbo Brat that needs some serious help. A friend of mine was supposed to help me restore it during last winter, then without telling me he up and left for Alaska after pulling the dash out. I am now stuck with a non-drivable truck. I don't have a lot of money, so taking it to a shop is out of the question. If any of you would be willing to help me put it back together I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time.
  4. So now that my brat is becoming more and more done, I'm getting ready to tackle the heat. Well, lack of it. When I turn the dial absolutely nothing happens. I deleted the a/c, but it wasn't working before that anyway. Where should I start my chase for the fix of the problem? Down the rabbit hole I go.....
  5. I wanna do somethin like this eventually For the front, I was thinking just recreating the stock one out of much more strudy material, like some 2x2 thick wall, and working in the radius rods. I'm guessing a ej 5 lug swap would be needed for strength. Axles would be a pita. Rear would be harder, Especially since I have a torsion bar. Would just replacing the tortion bar with some hard tubing, and then recreating the rear with the same stuff as the front, and then some nice struts all around. Other ideas and input would be amazing. Need some ideas
  6. my dads step brother took me for a ride in his brat close to 35 years ago..i wanted one every since.. i finally got one.. a little about me.. i drag race a 51 henry j gasser , offroad race a rock buggy, and hunt&fish.. my brat needs alot of TLC ,its missing a few parts and has some strange noises..hope to find some parts and info..
  7. Hi friends, I have had this brat for a few years. Never really knew anything about mechanics before, and I have been learning! I can't find a wheel hub anywhere for my brat. I have been searching to figure out what other subaru vehicles have universal parts with my 82 brat without any luck. The gear on the front wheel hub are totally stripped. I can't find a replacement part anywhere! nothing online no auto parts stores stock it and subaru was not helpful at all. Recently an old brat got into a junk yard but the hubs were pulled before I could get out there! I'm at a total loss. Does anyone know if there are other models/years of subaru that would have a compatible hub? Thanks!
  8. Do any of you guys know what size rectangle tubing/ c channel I should use to make a custom frame to but leaf sprung dana 44's under my brat? Was really hoping to make the frame smaller than normal trucks, I hate the look of like a 8 inch frame under the car. Any help would be awesome

  10. I own both a Brat and a Baja- I thought this would be a pretty fun project. Enjoy.
  11. Bought this Brat on Sunday in Worland, Wyoming. 4/5 lift, 15 inch pugs, jump seats have been added. A little hail damage, and a bit of surface rust. My plan: Ej Frankenmotor swap 5 speed d/r rear disks possibly add power steering Fix surface rust paint white with black bottom White one currently has the frankenmotor and tranny but is extremely rusty
  12. Hi Community, I don't know what to do, I've got an 81 BRAT, went from a Weber back to stock carb. Everything is set up as it should (according to my mechanic in Berkeley CA) and it's not coming close to passing emissions and now has no power after 3,500 RPM. I need an experts help. What could be going wrong. Stranded in San Francisco, Jack jacksokm@usc.edu 510-409-7861
  13. Here we go... I currently on a 1983 turbo Brat. I'm looking for someone to help me put it back together and do some major repair work. Parts Needed: front end core duel fans front end intercooler (added?)
  14. Hey Guys. I am having fun with my fully restored Brat that I got from a fellow board member, but I have been presented a new problem. Intermittenly, the stupid transmission does not want to come out of 4th gear!! I can sometimes "slam" it, and it will come out, other times, I have to let clutch out slightly to let it grab, then, push it out of fourth. Other times, no freaking issues at all. Any idea what this can be? Good thing I have a spare 5 speed I will be prepping to stick in there when I get some time (depending on issue, maybe sooner than later). let me know.. Thanks!!!
  15. Just picked up a beautiful 79 brat, but I'm wanting to replace the struts. I've poked around a little but can't seem to find any part numbers. Anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone used the KYB GR-2/EXCEL-G SHOCK ABSORBER?
  16. Hey guys. I'm pretty sure I know the problem but wanted a 2nd or 3rd opinion before I spend more money on the problem. 1983 Brat. Past month or so, it would sometimes not start right up, just a clicking sound. If I turned it a few times, it would start up. It's been getting worse and now I have to turn it like 50 times. It hasn't let me down yet and sometimes it gets a little juice and tries to start but then doesn't and goes back to the clicking. When I was doing tune up a few months ago, I noticed that Ignition coil was seeping some oil and my battery cables were mangled. So, I bought new ones and put those in this weekend (thinking mabye it was some bad connections) I also took a wire brush to the connection to the starter itself. Still the same problem. I know the battery and alternator are good, now I've got good connections but still just get the clicking and it's getting worse. I read through the forums that I could find and one question that came up is if the clicking is coming from the Dash area, or from the Engine bay. I'm pretty certain it's coming from the Bay. So, I think it's the starter?? Anyone else have any input? I'm new to working on my own cars so please give detailed troubleshooting steps if needed. Also, any recommendations on Starters?? It's a Fuji in there now and I can't seem to find a replacement Fuji. Thanks, guys.

  19. So the other day my brat started idling super slow on me, like it was going to sleep on me. Sometimes it would idle slowly enough that it would quit. Before this started happening I had adjusted the idle speed so that it idled at a little below 1000 RPMs, but now it was idling around 200-300.. It's not overheating, but when it happened the engine was at normal operating temperature. I checked the oil and that is fine. I checked all the wires on the spark plugs and they were snug. I simply adjusted the idle speed screw so that it was back up to around 1000 RPMs, and it runs normally now, but at first (right after I adjusted it) the engine was hiccuping, or lapsing rather. What could be wrong with it? I fear that by simply adjusting the idle speed screw I'm only treating the symptom and not the cause of the problem.
  20. So I got a few ideas, but what if I wanted to make a run of a few? Does anyone have any input? I have a reliable machinist who can make anything (including airplanes) and we got to talking. For a close to original looking one it would be about $70each for a run of a hundred of them. Thats a lot to shell at once. Thats also a rough estimate but chrome is hella costly and there isn't that much of a market. What do you all think or want?
  21. Anyone used a jeep (cj7) tcase to do the tcase mod? After monster brat fell through due to the rust, I'm hoping to salvage some of it. Everything that isn't frame or engine is bueno and I have 8" c channel from its bumpers (no rust) to use for the lift. Any disadvantage to doing it with the jeep tcase?
  22. Hello all at USMB my name is ben, i own a 95 impreza coupe which am doing a wrx swap on but just this month i was lucky enough to get an 1983 BRAT from the Original Owner! only 135k on her been sitting since 2002 since the owners husband died!T it has back fee's ,car was not running and missing tail lights, after some gas and a lot of patience she started! bogged down bad but changed the cap and rotor and plugs and wires now she goes through the RPM's like it should! i am sadly missing tail lights but the overall condition of the BRAT is amazing! Interior was redone in 2001 and held up amazingly well! Needs Brakes, tail lights and a new dash would be nice! A carb cleaning and rebuild will happen within the next weeks.Plans for the moment are get tail lights, replace vaccum and fuel lines, smog ,and maybe a paint job in the future and will look into upgrading to a weber but in the mean time i will take care of the minor rust it does have heres some pictures
  23. hello.. ive been looking for a old Subaru to restore. ive have never attempted to restore on my own, but have worked as a helper with several friends on restoring old cars. non where subarus but it did give me some experience. i've worked on an old buick and some various chevy's along with my own 86 Corvette (a absolute pain to) i have found a subaru brat made in 78. the condition is good. the owner had passed away and had rebuilt the engine and drive train. how ever the interior and exterior still need some tlc. but its a restoration car whats the fun if its all done the exterior has chipped paint with some surface rust( but not all the way through) paint is also faded the owners wife wants $1200 for it. she does not know anything about cars and is not able to give me a good account of his work so far other than the engine and drive train. but... it does come with the original roll bar( great condition), the original rear bucket seats( fair) and finally the camp shell is included. all this for $1200 should i be weary or is this a true deal of a life time
  24. Hello, I got an 84 brat and it ran awesome, however within 2 days the fuel pump went "out" replace it and still nothing. So a kid my age had it before the owner I got it from and kind of messed with it all. I'd like to rewire is so I know the pump is betting proper voltage and everything. Does anyone live in Vegas or near that would possible help or just schematics for a good rewiring. Also any other help for a restore would be helpful. This will be my first restore. V/R
  25. Hello everyone, it's been a long time. I had a great time at WCSS 15, and it was a great motivator for me to get back to work on my Brat. Here is a little history for everyone that may be new: I picked up the Brat in 98 after I got back from basic training. I started playing around with fixing it up, and then modding it a little here and there. In 2000 after I got home from a deployment to Saudi Arabia the real modding started when I picked up an imported Ozified 4" lift and put some "bigger" tires on. Around '02ish the USMB saw a great influx in the wheeling scene, we saw a lot of lift, tire mods, engine mods. I took a lot the ideas and started assembling them together, and after getting home from Egypt in '03 I tore the brat down to just the body. I built a 6" "framed" lift, to that I added a Nissan 720 pickup divorce t-case, a 5spd dual range trans fitted behind an ER27. The bed was bobbed a little over a foot and I built whole custom "slide off" front end. A year of tweaking and a couple coats of "Midnight Metallic Blue" paint and she made her way to her first WCSS (and my second), #6 in Hood River. She remained virtually untouched (no more modding) for over 6 years, with the only work being done was fixing what broke, which was of course every time I took it out I broke something. So in 2009 while I was in Iraq I decided that I wanted to make it more reliable, and able to handle more power, so I had my wife start looking for an early 80's Nissan 4wd pickup. When I got home in 2010 I had an 84 Nissan sitting in the driveway right behind the Brat. I started stripping apart the Nissan and then stripping apart the Brat. I had the cut the frame of the Nissan to put the rear tires under the wheel well Then came fitting the engine and trans, that was a bit of a challenge as the frame was designed for a straight 4 And that was where it sat for over a year. I got caught up with work, and other "hobbies" and doing a lot more "family stuff". So the Brat just sat in the driveway, half assembled, waiting. Then the show came a long, and seeing all the other Roo's playing in the mud got something coursing through my veins that had been missing for a while. I came home on Sunday, and that night I started working. Got the newly formed oil pan bolted in, then started working on the exhaust.it is a bit tight moving around in there, so had to get creative with the plumbing there, finished off the header pipe this last weekend. Once the rain lets up I'll get back to it, I hope to fire the engine again before the end of the month, then only a couple page list of things left to do.
