most of my family think im just being myself, the guys at work think im stupid for spending money on my "crappy P.O.S. subaru" my woman thinks im nuts and wishes i would buy a better, nicer car. my stepbrother and best friend know what my car can do. in general, i think subaru's are one of the underdog's of the automotive world. i guess you just have to go out and show em how's boss. but for the most part, you guys are the only people that share my enthusiasum. ~Josh~

i would say its on its way to being done, if you need a used head, contact me or post a message in the wanted ads here, im sure there are people with spares. ~Josh~

ive almost got stuck on many occassions, no i dont have an LSD or a welded rear diff, a lot of driving offroad and in slippery conditions is car placement, if you purposely drive into deep snow or mud, your probably going to get stuck. a major factor is tires. these cars dont have a lot of ground clearance under the body, 6-8 inches sounds like SUV numbers, but its not, these cars are also light, which makes them stay on top of terrain rather than sink through it. that can be both beneficial and detrimental. practice makes better, cause no one is perfect. so get out there and enjoy your 4wd car. ~Josh~

early as in 1990-1994 models, id like to know what years, i have a 1990 wagon that has a slightly slipping clutch, would be easy to put the spare XT6 clutch kit i have on it. ~Josh~

How big is the gas tank?
ballitch replied to Camelwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ive run my 86' out of gas twice, both times going downhill and able to coast into gas station, when i filled up it was 15.96 gallons, probably a little bit left but oh well. ~Josh~ -
okay ladies, the great John Bloom has tried probably every combo you can think of. he says that there is only one way to do it, and just for the record, an XT6 clutch disc and pressure plate can handle whatever power an ER27 can put out, which is probably in the neighborhood of what a EJ22 will put out. dont get me wrong, ive thought about this also. the fact of the matter is that the EJ motor clutch disc is bigger in diameter than the EA input splines on the EA trannys, that solves that. the EJ flywheel, while having the bolt pattern of the EJ motor, is either too big or too small to be engaged by the EA or EJ starters in the EA tranny, see where im going? you use the EA flywheel, machined to XT6 spec, or you use the XT6 flywheel, turned to tolerance. not trying to stay in the box or anything, but this pot has been burnt, stirred, and burnt again. it is what it is, brother. ~Josh~

the dual range out of a normally aspirated car has the 1.59 ratio low range, the turbo cars got the 1.19 ratio(i think that is the ratio) you definately want the one from the N/A cars. there has to be a thread around here somewhere that tells you what axles combo to make it all mate up together. ~Josh~

if you go to the main home page, and go into the archives you will find a thread about to do that very swap, im thinking about doing it also. all the guess work is done for you, so all you gotta do is follow the yellow brick road. ~Josh~

differences between 2.5 wrx and a 2.5 legacy gt limited
ballitch replied to urabus 00's topic in Subaru Transplants
you CAN buy a turbo kit, but if you run over 6 psi of boost you might kill that motor, you can always take Phase II EJ22 heads, send the cams out of the EJ22 heads to deltacam in tacoma, WA. and have them grind the cams for a better profile, throw in a header and a larger exhaust, and you just gained 30-35 HP, but you will have to run premium gas to keep it from detonating and burning your motor up. take a look over at nasioc and look up Matt Monson, and read all the info about the "High Compression Frankenstein" ~Josh~ -
yes it can be done, but you will have to make a custom up and downpipe to relocate the second turbo away from the steering shaft thingy, and around the engine crossmember. after you get the ECU, complete vehicle harness, and an intercooler. a new 2.5'' or 3'' exhaust will be needed for this to put out good power with not to many restrictions. take a gander over at nasioc.com, there is tons of info over there to guide you. but, if you wanted to say, scrap the twin turbo and got single turbo, your life would be alot less hecktic. ~Josh~

yes, but, those motors with the right combo of parts can make 400 reliable WHP all day long, arent turbos great!!! ~Josh~

lol....4.44 gears in a 3AT, it runs high on the freeway as it is, but would be killer for offroad.

interior fan dead, fuses ok, what gives??
ballitch replied to loyalewithcheese's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i hear you man, its winter. and ive been trying to figure this whole fan not working for some time now. when it works, on 1,2 it stays on until i take corners too fast or stop really hard, on 3,4 it will only work for about 30 seconds befroe it quits. i tried hard wiring the resistor block with 20 ga. wire, but it didnt help, the fan works i think it might be the fan speed selector, i need it fixed dangit!!!! -
ya im thinking i might just do the 5-lug swap instead of the toyots rims, just better handling and i can use my leftover legacy rime with newish tires on them......................................................see how i justify upgrades. ~Josh~

i would really like a tranny with the 1.59 low range and the 4.11 gears, wouldnt that be a nice crawl ratio.

suby motors are kinda light.
ballitch replied to 4x4moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ya a complete suby engine weighs less than a 350 chevy block. -
well since your car is pre-OBDII i say it should be too hard, it just has to smog as a 92 loyale, and not much better. the wiring is a pain, its not hard, its just VERY time consuming, take breaks every hour or so to get your eyes back into focus, you'll know what i mean. i reccomend using steel for an adapter plate, oyu can use an acetylene torch to cut it, unlike aluminum you dont HAVE to use a plasma cutter to cut it. basically, for the wiring, every wire that comes off of the ECU, go wire by wire and find out where it goes and if you need it. like A/C wires, do you have A/C, if so keep those wires. Another is the Power brake Unit, your car already has brakes, you dont need the wires for that. there is alot of info out there, i didnt know crap about how to do this, so i searched and found out most of the R&D was already done for me. there will be fabrication needed along the way, so make sure oyu have access to a welder and grinder and drill bits, etc. good luck. ~Josh~

ive been on some pretty off camber stuff before also........the idea of actually tipping it over though, never crossed my mind......hmmm....roll bar....... ~Josh~

the wrx has a front diff of 3.9, a center diff of 1.1:1, and a rear diff of 3.545 or 3.454, not the one you want. and i was wrong everyone, my 1990 has a rear diff of 4.111, my bad. also, check out the archives for the axle/spline count thread it will help alot. ~Josh~
-
have you looked at the sticker on the back of your 90's rear diff. mine says 3.90, dont know about yours, mine is a manual. ~Josh~

Centerforce will make us a clutch!
ballitch replied to Steveman09's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
okay......i use the XT6 clutch and pressure plate on my EJ conversion, and never once has it slipped, the XT6 PP HAS to be stronger to take the force of a 2.7 litre H6 engine, it just has to be that way, you can use the XT6 clutch as well, unless there is a huge difference in the thickness of a XT6 flywheel and a 4WD EA82 flywheel, there should not be a problem. granted, i had my EA82 flywheel machined by John to XT6 thickness, i dont know what the difference between the two is. ~Josh~ -
did you separate the engine-only wires? those are the only ones you need. its different because the wires to the engine also go to other places, and the wires from the engine go back to the computer, its not just wires and a couple sensors coming from the motor that give a read-out on an instrument panel, but thats the price of fuel injection. ~Josh~

well as far as top speed, heck no, not better than a legacy, but off the line speed is better, like noah said, its hard to get the power to the asphalt with all that wheelspin. on my way up to shelton, WA for the WCSS7 i got about 420 miles on one tank before fill up, highway miles, but with stock tires, and i still had a gallon left in the tank. but for offroading, the low end torque is very helpful. to go 65 in my 86 wagon is at 3k rpms, but i dont use much throttle to stay there, thats where you get your good mileage from. but if you are really concerned, throw an EJ18 in there instead of a EJ22, best of both worlds so to speak. ~Josh~
